Abstract: With an excess of interconnected devices, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies offer an exciting area for information systems researchers; however, the inherently physical nature of IoT makes it difficult to provide hands-on laboratory exercises to remote students. Research suggests that enactive mastery provides the greatest educational improvement to individual self-efficacy, yet not all enactive experiences are the same, certainly not when individuals have no means of accessing materials physically. Through the use of a virtual laboratory and home automation IoT technology, we develop a method to teach IoT in remote settings where students can experience hands-on IoT training in remote settings. We experimentally evaluate the virtual laboratory by comparing student outcomes in a traditional setting using physical materials to those using the virtual laboratory. Results indicate that while student perceptions were lower for students using the virtual laboratory, this virtual laboratory was successful in offering students the means to perform hands-on IoT automation, with these students achieving equivalent performance metrics to those utilizing a traditional physical laboratory. Abstract: Android access notifications are presented to users to obtain permission to access data and services on smartphones. The number of 'unsafe' apps in the Android marketplaces underscores the importance of understanding what factors influence whether users engage in more effortful systematic processing of access notifications. We propose a multiple-motive heuristic-systematic model to examine how different motives impact users' processing modes. We find that the need to be accurate in making decisions (accuracy), the desire to defend preferred positions (defense), and social pressure from others (impression) influence how users process Android access notifications, and they do so in different ways. Abstract: Online communities are increasingly seen as new forms of organizing. However, we have limited understanding of how leadership structures in an online community emerge. Prior literature focuses on leadership that is relatively concentrated in the hands of select individuals, once the online community has already been established. This paper therefore seeks to explore how leadership evolves throughout the history of an online community, from an embryonic stage, through the emergence stage to the establish stage. In the context of an online community built around a GitHub-hosted project called GitPoint, we carried out a content analysis of interactions conducted across social networks, including Twitter and Gitter, between its individual members. Based on this analysis, the paper offers insights into the emergence of leadership structures in an online community and makes key contributions to the literature on leadership in online communities. Abstract: The QWERTY keyboard on mobile devices usually requires users’ full visual attention and both hands, which is not always possible. We propose a thumb-stroke-based keyboard, ThumbStroke, to support both sight-free and one-handed text entry. Text entry via ThumbStroke completely relies on the directions of thumb strokes at any place on the screen of a mobile device. It does not require physical press on any specific keys, thus eliminating the need for visual attention and reducing errors due to tiny key size, fat thumbs, limited thumb reachability, and visual occlusion. We empirically evaluated ThumbStroke through a 20-session longitudinal controlled lab experiment. ThumbStroke shows advantages in typing accuracy and user perceptions in comparison to the Escape and QWERTY keyboards and results in faster typing speed than QWERTY in sight-free and one-handed text entry. This study provides novel research contributions to mobile HCI, advancing the design of soft keyboards for one-handed interaction with mobile devices and mobile accessibility. Collapse

Abstract: Purchasing digital goods such as mobile apps is risky for consumers. As experience good, apps need to be installed to see if they meet requirements. To foster app sales, platform operators reduce inherent information asymmetry by providing information like customer reviews and download numbers. Lenient refund policies are another way to reduce consumer risk. Previous research has not yet evaluated whether refund policies are effective for paid mobile app adoption. This article investigates whether refund policies play a role in purchase decisions and how they should be designed by store owners or app developers to foster app sales. A large-scale natural experiment based on a change of refund policy of a well-known mobile app platform, followed by a conjoint experiment that evaluates existing refund policy designs is conducted. Other decision factors such as ratings are also considered. Both analyses show that refund policies play a critical part in the customers' decision process. We find that users prefer a smooth refund process over a longer period to apply for refunding and that lenient refund policies have a positive effect on paid app sales. Results indicate that app users rely on lenient refund policies as much as on customer reviews. Collapse

Abstract: Often within communities there is sufficient interest in group-activities and yet they fail to occur because of insufficient individual initiative. This could be due to diffusion of responsibility or uncertainty about the availability of potential participants. Providing information about the number of interested individuals has conflicting implications, and hence an ambiguous impact on the likelihood of activities occurring. Our experiment examines the impact of providing information about community interest on activity initiation. Subjects (n=2000) were given information about the level of interest in a possible activity within their community and the ability to initiate its planning. Results indicate that displaying sufficient interest in an activity is positively associated with willingness to initiate planning. This suggests that Internet applications which 1) provide awareness of shared activity interest and 2) reduce effort required to initiate activity planning could boost collective action and improve community life. Abstract: This paper provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of the multi-unit Dutch teleshopping auctions of 1–2–3.tv. There are two channels for sales transactions: Customers either bid in the teleshopping auctions or purchase in the online shop for a simultaneously available fixed price. Our theoretical analysis indicates that profit-maximizing customers do not overbid the fixed price, since they risk experiencing the Bidder’s Curse: Buying at a uniform auction price that is higher than the fixed price. Our data set includes nearly 700,000 recorded bids. We find that customers overbid in 26% of all bids, but the Bidder’s Curse only occurs in 5% of all auctions. Offline-bidders (telephone calls) overbid both by larger amounts and more often than do online-bidders (website or app), and, on average, the most frequent customers do not experience learning effects. Abstract: This paper illustrates the application of mobile and wireless technologies for estimating the severity of Parkinson Disease symptoms, and performing a personalized drug administration to PD patients. The measurements of patient finger pressures on the screen of a smart phone, translated into analogue voltage and digital bits, are taken by an Android App. The computations performed through Fast Fourier Transformations (FFT) and Reaction and Movement time, enable the calculation of the severity of the PD symptoms, which results in an appropriate drug administration for that patient, at the moment when the measurement of patient finger pressures is taken. The novelty of this research is twofold. It allows a high level of personalization in PD treatment and uses modern technologies to bring new solutions in the field of drug administration to PD patients. Collapse

Abstract: The development of novel software applications on digital platforms differs from traditional software development and provides unique challenges to software development managers and teams. Platform-based applications must achieve application-platform match, application-market match, value propositions exceeding platform’s core value propositions, and novelty. These desired properties support a new vision of the software development team as entrepreneurs with a goal of developing novel applications on digital platforms. In this research study, we look for evidence on an open-source software development project – Apache Cordova – that development teams use effectual thinking. Over one thousand user stories are analyzed for the use of constructs from a proposed effectual software development research model. The findings provide an initial confirmation that effectual development methods hold promise for the definition of new process models that better support application development on digital platforms. We conclude with a discussion on the implications of our results, research contributions, and future directions. Collapse
