Abstract: Although hotel location has been recognized as one of the important factors affecting hotel selection and guest satisfaction, relatively few studies have examined guest satisfaction with hotel location and its locational determinants at a macro level. This study aims to identify the locational determinants of hotel guest satisfaction through big data spatial analytics via a case study of 5,302 hotels in 151 cities in the U.S. Based on the framework of hotel location satisfaction, we classified all location-related factors into three categories: accessibility to points of interest, transport convenience, and surrounding environment. Our findings indicated that hotel property’s proximity to city area, landmark, park, shopping center, and highway as well as, attraction-driven tourism industry specialization, and hotel industry agglomeration were significant determinants. Furthermore, the impacts of these factors were spatially heterogeneous. These findings can provide geographical insights that are critical for developing a customer service experience and satisfaction model. Collapse

Abstract: Information Exchange (IE) is an important area of research in Information Systems (IS), there is a lack of a framework that guides the design of an IE systems to support IE among multiple stakeholders with the purpose of improving the decision-making. To address this literature gap, this paper utilizes the Theory of Information Exchange (ToIE) as a kernel theory to develop an Information Exchange Decision Support (IEDS) framework. The framework depicts how to design an IE platform for multiple stakeholders to improve their decision quality. The qualitative evaluation shows that the IEDS framework is useful for identifying stakeholders, specifying information to be exchanged, and maintaining motivation factors necessary for IE. The IEDS framework offers prescriptive knowledge for building an effective IE in a multiple stakeholder environment and it can be applied in different business domains and provide guidance to the designers and developers of IE platforms. Abstract: Appraising real estate is challenging since a property's characteristics, location, and neighborhood make up for substantial shares of its price. Current Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) approaches rely on hedonic models and structured real estate data. Recent work proposed to include geospatial or image data to improve CAMA's predictive accuracy. However, the value of these data sources and their preparation costs remain unclear. In this study, we use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to appraise 71,000 properties in Philadelphia. We find that geospatial data requires substantial preprocessing but increases CAMA's predictive accuracy by 12%, while image data come with higher computational complexity and an improvement of 16%. Using both datatypes is complex to optimize but offers increased robustness towards extreme outliers. Beyond real estate appraisal, our study is one of the first to quantify the value of geospatial data for data-driven services in the information systems discipline. Collapse

This study seeks to understand how effective news reporting can be toward influencing the behavior of people who live within the proximity of the attack. Abstract: Despite growing engagements between firms and nonmarket stakeholders—such as local communities and nongovernmental organizations —research has yet to examine the emergence of formal contracts between them. Given that a very large number of such contracts are theoretically possible but only a small number exist, we seek to understand what factors explain the use of contracts to govern some relationships between firms and nonmarket stakeholders but not others. We draw on transaction cost economics to study transactions wherein a nonmarket stakeholder provides a firm access to a valuable resource and to understand when these transactions are governed by formal contracts. We propose that, when a firm makes site-specific investments, a stakeholder’s use rights to the resource sought by the firm, the negative externalities generated by its use, and the stakeholder’s capacity for collective mobilization increase holdup risk for the firm and therefore the probability of a contract. We collect novel data on the location of indigenous communities and mines in Canada to identify a plausible exhaustive set of indigenous communities “at risk” of signing a contract with a mining firm. We test our hypotheses by relying, respectively, on historically assigned property rights over lands, the mine-community colocation in a watershed and proximity on transportation routes, and archival records of community mobilization events. We find support for our propositions by examining which of the 5,342 dyads formed by 459 indigenous communities and 98 firms signed 259 contracts between 1999 and 2013. Collapse

Abstract: Wildlife management is becoming increasingly critical to improving the sustainability of biodiversity and the welfare of human beings. This paper uses affordance as a lens to explore the design of information systems that can assist in managing wildlife in protected areas. Through an action design research (ADR) study with a forest department, we develop and test design principles for a class of wildlife management analytics system (WMAS). We identify the initial design principles, including elements of the action potential, materiality, and boundary condition, and iteratively refine them based on an instantiation of WMAS through two iterations of design and implementation cycles. Through our work, we contribute to design knowledge by abstracting the artefacts, design principles in particular, and the ADR approach by generalising two new activities and corresponding principles when designing analytical models. Our findings can also be used to address a class of similar problems and systems in practice. Collapse

Abstract: Geographic data is often used to supplement business data, but geographic location (GeoLocation) data has business value in its own right. This geospatial study presents a midwestern town’s use of location analytics to infer the purpose for bike trips (usage purpose) and perform what-if analysis to enhance transportation options. The study applies spatial data analysis of bikeshare within transit management and public planning to address funding sources and public good. This case includes GeoExtension of the Metro Bike Share source data by utilizing U. S. Census data. The overall Metro Transit operational goal is to effectively manage the rideshare program to maximize community benefits, particularly in offering optimal transit options. Analysis to inform business operations are 1) inferring likely purpose for bike rides to differentiate between transportation and leisure; 2) determine if bike use integrates with other transit offerings, and 3) to provide transportation options to residents in low-income areas. Abstract: In June, 2019, the Association for Information Systems (AIS) adopted a new approach to addressing global sustainability issues by establishing the AIS Sustainability Task Force (AIS STF). This initiative focuses on building on the outcomes from the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDG, 2000(MDG, -2015 and applying them to address the challenges associated with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG, 2016(SDG, -2030. In this paper, we review the challenges and outcomes from the UN sustainability programs with their potential relevance to IS in general and the AIS in particular to inform and assist increased efforts to achieve the global sustainability goals. The initial event, the AIS Sustainability Summit held at ICIS 2019, provided a forum for AIS groups and communities to share their current interests, plans, activities, and experiences relevant to the MDG and SDG. The event primarily focused on facilitating opportunities to scale the AIS's sustainability activities through multi-disciplinary collaboration across the AIS and its communities. Members from four AIS special interest groups and the STF's Education Workgroup presented exemplary projects at the summit that demonstrated how one can apply applied IS and research capabilities to address sustainability challenges. The sustainability summit's also explored opportunities to achieve positive impact in addressing the SDG's global challenges through applying AIS members' knowledge, skills, and capabilities in relevant ways in collaboration with suitable organizations outside the AIS. Potential organizations include business, government, societal groups, and UN bodies. We presented and discussed the AIS STF's aims, plans, outcomes, and impact. By analyzing details and options for cross-organizational collaboration, the representatives of organizations at the sustainability summit developed a proposed framework for scaling contributions and evaluating impact. Finally, they drew conclusions about the proposed activities, approaches, and framework for the AIS to improve the scope and scale of its contributions in addressing the SDG. Critically, the AIS needs to ensure that its proposed activities, contributions, and impact are examined by an internationally recognized independent process. We propose a model for the AIS to realize this requirement for evaluation in 2021. Collapse

Abstract: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to create a geospatially-enabled student data management system (SDMS). Although there are many applications available to create SDMS, GIS has some unique features that would make managing student data more convenient. This research gap was identified via stakeholder interaction and systematic literature review where no current geospatially-enabled SDMS was discovered that utilizes GIS technology to accommodate and share the information between multi-stakeholders. As such, this research aims to utilize GIS and visualization tools to design and implement Geospatial SDMS that help different stakeholders, such as scholarship organizations, employers, and students to speed and improve their decision outcomes. The project is based on a case study in Yemen. Using a qualitative assessment method, this system was evaluated in a real-world scenario where different stakeholders were introduced to the system and their feedback was collected via a focus group.
