Abstract: Notwithstanding the biggest victim of digital piracy, we have a limited understanding of how TV drama piracy affects its legal consumption. Unlike movies or music, TV dramas are typically a series of episodes, where pirated past episodes may not necessarily carry a negative impact on the legal consumption of current episodes. The consumption boosted by piracy can promote Internet buzz, which may draw the attention of potential consumers and may result in broader legal consumption afterward. Based on an empirical analysis regarding the re­ lationships among the viewership of 20 TV dramas broadcast in the US, social media activities on Twitter, Google and YouTube search trends, and the number of BitTorrent users who pirated these TV dramas, we show that although the direct effect of media consumption through BitTorrent to TV viewership is negative, the indirect effect that mediates Internet buzz is positive, which dilutes the negative effect of digital piracy. Such positive effects of digital piracy are more substantial for the second half of dramas, less popular dramas, and serial dramas. We discuss the theoretical contributions and managerial implications of our study. Collapse

Abstract: The paper examines the effects of five major socialization agents—namely parents, peers, traditional media, the Internet, and music industry—on emerging adults' attitudes and behavior toward music piracy in the form of unauthorized downloading. Based upon self-reported behavior, our study shows that these socialization agents exert differential effects on music piracy. Specifically, peers and the Internet exert direct impact on both attitudes and behavior. Parents and music industry, however, only have indirect impact on emerging adults' piracy behavior through shaping their attitudes. The research further shows that the effects of socialization agents differ across consumer segments. A factor mixture modeling technique is first applied to disentangle the behavioral heterogeneity, and more observable factors such as demographic, social, and psychological variables are then utilized to profile members in each segment. From a managerial perspective, this research provides new avenues for managers and policy makers to design targeted prevention programs to curtail music piracy. Collapse

Abstract: We consider an online market where consumers may obtain digital goods from two mutually exclusive channels: a legitimate channel consisting of many law-abiding retailers and a piracy channel consisting of many piracy services. We analyze consumer choice, retailer strategy, and piracy control using a sequential-search approach where information acquisition is costly for some consumers (nonshoppers), yet costless for others (shoppers). First, we show that a nonshopper's channel choice is determined by a simple comparison of two reservation prices. Second, we analyze how piracy threats affect in-channel pricing among retailers. If the in-channel competition intensity among retailers is high, piracy does not affect retailer pricing. If the intensity is medium, retailers respond to piracy by giving up some shoppers and, surprisingly, raising prices. If the intensity is low, the legitimate channel loses some shoppers as well as some nonshoppers to the piracy channel. Third, we consider several mechanisms for fighting piracy and analyze their effects on firm profit and consumer surplus. Reducing piracy quality and increasing piracy search costs are both effective in controlling piracy, yet they affect consumer surplus differently. Reducing the number of piracy services is less effective in controlling piracy. Collapse

Abstract: Underground music file sharing communities are online social spaces that facilitate the sharing of mostly unauthorised digital content. This paper proposes underground file sharing communities as subcultures, and explores the Roswell community from theoretical perspectives of group formation and translation from Actor-network theory (ANT) to gain a better understanding of the motivations for file sharing. Through observations and supporting interviews, a detailed discussion of underground file sharing communities is presented. The discussion reveals interesting insights about the ‘black box’ of file sharing, and the ideologies of those involved. Scarcity and quality are strong motivators for engaging in underground file sharing communities, with access to high quality music files and scarce music files being a reward for actively participating. The quality of content is maintained through strict rules for converting and uploading new music. Because underground communities are quite sophisticated, it is argued that it is possible to learn from them and use this knowledge in the development of future online music systems and communities. Abstract: The creative industries have frequently expressed concern that they can't compete with freely available copies of their content. Competing with free is particularly concerning for movie studios, whose content may be more prone to single-use consumption than other industries such as music. This issue has gained renewed importance recently with the advent of new digital video recording and distribution technologies, and the widespread availability of Internet piracy. We examine competition between "free" and paid video content in two important contexts: the impact of legitimate free distribution in one channel on sales through paid channels, and the impact of illegitimate free distribution in pirated channels on sales through paid channels. We do this by studying the impact of movie broadcasts on DVD demand and the impact of piracy availability at the time of broadcast on DVD demand. Our data include all movies shown on over-the-air and cable television during an eight-month period in 2005--2006. With respect to the impact of movie broadcasts on piracy and sales, we find that movie broadcasts on over-the-air networks result in a significant increase in both DVD sales at Amazon.com and illegal downloads for those movies that are available on BitTorrent at the time of broadcast. With respect to the impact of piracy on sales, we use the television broadcast as an exogenous demand shock and find that the availability of pirated content at the time of broadcast has no effect on post-broadcast DVD sales gains. Together our results suggest that creative artists can use product differentiation and market segmentation strategies to compete with freely available copies of their content. Specifically, the post-broadcast increase in DVD sales suggests that giving away content in one channel can stimulate sales in a paid channel if the free content is sufficiently differentiated from its paid counterpart. Likewise, our finding that the presence of pirated content does not cannibalize sales for the movies in our sample suggests that if free and paid products appeal to separate customer segments, the presence of free products need not harm paid sales. Abstract: Based on survey data from 489 German potential Video On Demand users this research explores effects of early movie availability on consumers’ utility, their willingness to pay, and copyright violations. Using a triangulation approach, we employed adaptive conjoint analysis and contingent valuation methodologies. Our results show substantially increased utility levels and greater willingness to pay for Video On Demand services that offer movies simultaneously with or shortly before the first official theatrical release. Our findings bear similarities to results from experiments on hyperbolic discounting, a concept from the field of behavioral economics. Diverging from classic microeconomic theory, immediate consumption seems to be valued irrationally high. This effect is even stronger for copyright violators. Implications both for future academic research and for the motion picture industry are drawn. Collapse

Abstract: In Europe 2006 was the year of Voice-over-IP (VoIP). Almost all telecom providers started to offer VoIP products in combination with a phone flat rate. However, the VoIP technology was mature since 1999. Why was the success of VoIP so many years delayed? Can the enormous success of Skype be a major reason? In this paper we try to answer which influence the peer-to-peer paradigm as technology has on established business models of the new media industries. As new media industries we understand the media and telecom industries as well as Internet Service Providers (ISPs), because these industries start to merge by offering the same products and services to their customers. In three case studies we look at the telecom industry, at the media industry, and at ISPs. For each case study we first identify a reliable set of base figures. This is an important but non-trivial task, as often figures published by companies include abstractions which influence the figures in favor of the company. Having achieved reliable base figures we model the impact of the peer-to-peer paradigm on a specific industry and try to forecast the major trends of the next one to three years. Collapse

Abstract: Information goods are costly to produce. However, replicating an information good is practically costless. As a result, many information good industries have severe problems with piracy. The pornography industry is an information good industry that thrives despite piracy. This research-in-progress examines why consumers are willing to pay for pornography despite the availability of free pornography. We attempt to obtain both free and paid pornography and compare and contrast the outcomes. Our preliminary results suggest that free pornography has hidden costs, while paid pornography is low cost. Specific costs to free pornography include long wait times (depending on the approach, up to 7.5 hours with no result), and the risk of virus infection. In contrast, access to large libraries of high-quality paid pornography can be obtained for as little as US$14.95 a month. Our results suggest that lawsuits will not help information goods producers, because consumers of pirated goods value money over time. Collapse
