Abstract: Digital environment has transformed the work environment of marketing firms. Traditional marketing processes are repetitive, lack coordination, and are not dynamic or data-driven. To compete effectively in the digital world, marketing firms need a digital marketing analytics operations platform (DMAOP) optimized for data analytics, workflow, team coordination, and quick decision-making. We developed a DMAOP using a design science research model known as ADR. DMAOP uses data analytics leading to marketing decisions that create value with intelligent robotic processes assisting marketing practitioners in executing marketing actions. DMAOP is customized to a user's skill level, supporting marketing functions, advanced analytics, preserving privacy, and episodic reporting for users without technical skills. This study contributes to descriptive knowledge problem space by identifying the key aspects of DMAO. It also contributes to the "elaborated ADR" model with a new cycle, "personalization". Finally, it contributes to prescriptive knowledge and DMAOP instantiation with design science for digital platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations tout the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship. Yet, when hiring it remains unclear how they evaluate entrepreneurial human capital—namely, job candidates with founder experience. How hiring firms evaluate this experience—and especially how this evaluation varies by entrepreneurial success and failure—reveals insights into the structures and processes within organizations. Organizations research points to two perspectives related to the evaluation of founder experience: Former founders may be advantaged, due to founder experience signaling high-quality capabilities and human capital, or disadvantaged, due to concerns related to fit and commitment. To identify the dominant class of mechanisms driving the evaluation of founder experience, it is important to consider how these evaluations differ, depending on whether the founder’s venture failed or succeeded. To isolate demand-side mechanisms and hold supply-side factors constant, we conducted a field experiment. We sent applications varying the candidate’s founder experience to 2,400 software engineering positions in the United States at random. We find that former founders received 43% fewer callbacks than nonfounders and that this difference is driven by older hiring firms. Further, this founder penalty is greatest for former successful founders, who received 33% fewer callbacks than former failed founders. Our results highlight that mechanisms related to concerns about fit and commitment, rather than information asymmetry about quality, are most influential when hiring firms evaluate former founders in our context. Abstract: We explore how the initial market positioning of entrepreneurial ventures shapes how they professionalize over time, focusing specifically on the development of functional roles. In contrast to existing literature, which presumes a uniform march toward professionalization as ventures scale and complete developmental milestones, we advance a contingent perspective, distinguishing between the development of external interface functions (marketing & sales and customer development) and internal process functions (accounting, human resources, and finance). Specifically, we argue that positioning in an unconventional market space raises demand for external engagement that focuses ventures’ attention and resources toward developing external interface roles. At the same time, such unconventional ventures are less apt to elaborate their internal process roles relative to more conventional peers. We test these predictions using a novel longitudinal data set on the internal organizations of 3,748 U.S.-based entrepreneurial ventures. In contrast to common assumptions of convergent professionalization, our theory and findings advance the perspective that ventures pursue divergent professionalization paths based on their initial market positioning as they scale up. Abstract: There is limited systematic research on managerial response strategies to online customer complaints and negative reviews. In this paper, we synthesize justice theory and service recovery literature to develop a model that explores the mechanisms through which appropriate managerial responses to customer complaints influence aggregate future review valence and complaints. We test our model using data from TripAdvisor.com, a leading travel review platform. Using text analysis (e.g., natural language processing and deep learning), we extract and code the variables in our model from the reviews and the managerial responses to these reviews. Key findings indicate that responding to customer reviews—in particular, negative reviews—will have a positive influence on future review valence. Moreover, responses with more rational cues than emotional cues to customer complaints about procedural unfairness will have a positive influence on future review valence. However, responses with more rational cues than emotional cues to customer complaints about interactional unfairness will have a negative influence on future review valence. Moreover, we find that when reviews have both distributive and interactional unfairness, responses with more rational cues matter. In addition, we find that both rational cues and emotional cues in responses to distributive unfairness and rational cues in responses to procedural unfairness are effective to decrease the future occurrence of similar complaints. Abstract: This study adopts a signaling theory perspective to examine whether and how crowdfunding (relative to angel financing) influences subsequent venture capital (VC) investments in startups. We used a bivariate probit model with propensity score matching to address the potential endogeneity of the initial funding choice. Subsequently, we found that crowdfunded startups have a lower chance of receiving VC funding than angel-financed startups and that the effect is more negative for startups located outside of startup cluster cities. We show that corporate VCs, unlike independent VCs comprising the majority of VCs, favor crowdfunded startups. Our study contributes to the literature on crowdfunding, startup finance, and the transformative effects of IT-enabled platforms. This study further discusses the practical implications of crowdfunding in startup finance ecosystems. Collapse

Abstract: During crises, there is a need for a large amount of information in a short period. Such need creates the base for misinformation to spread within and outside the affected community. This may result in misinformation harms that can generate serious short term or long-term consequences. In such situations, there is a need for a joint human-machine effort to mitigate misinformation. Though there has been research in the area of management of AI in the recent past, there has been scarce work in examining situations where machines and humans interact for mitigating misinformation. In order to systematically analyze misinformation and suggest mechanisms for mitigation, we draw on Activity Theory to conceptualize a suitable framework. Such a framework will enable investigating human-machine interactions through loops of “misinformation generation” and “misinformation mitigation” activities for mitigating misinformation harms. Abstract: Patient locus of control (LOC) is a strong determinant of health outcomes, yet healthcare systems rarely use patient LOC to devise treatment plans. Our clinical research applies action design research methods to design and evaluate healthcare information systems to improve paths and outcomes of patient care. Socio-technical synergies between the interior (technical) and exterior (socio) designs support effective human-computer interfaces and interactions. Rigorous focus group evaluations of the systems for capturing LOC information and using that information in treatment plans are performed and system refinements are implemented. Abstract: Health misinformation has become an unfortunate truism of social media platforms, where lies could spread faster than truth. Despite considerable work devoted to suppressing fake news, health misinformation, including low-quality health news, persists and even increases in recent years. One promising approach to fighting bad information is studying the temporal and sentiment effects of health news stories and how they are discussed and disseminated on social media platforms like Twitter. As part of the effort of searching for innovative ways to fight health misinformation, this study analyzes a dataset of more than 1600 objectively and independently reviewed health news stories published over a 10-year span and nearly 50,000 Twitter posts responding to them. Spe­ cifically, it examines the source credibility of health news circulated on Twitter and the temporal, sentiment features of the tweets containing or responding to the health news reports. The results show that health news stories that are rated low by experts are discussed more, persist longer, and produce stronger sentiments than highly rated ones in the tweetosphere. However, the highly rated stories retained a fresh interest in the form of new tweets for a longer period. An in-depth understanding of the characteristics of health news distribution and discussion is the first step toward mitigating the surge of health misinformation. The findings provide insights into understanding the mechanism of health information dissemination on social media and practical implica­ tions to fight and mitigate health misinformation on digital media platforms. Abstract: Organizational involvement in stigmatized practices, that is, practices that attract substantial societal condemnation, is often challenging, inasmuch as it requires the successful management of stakeholder disapproval. In this regard, existing work on organizational stigma has highlighted the advantages of situating stigmatized practices within large, generalist organizations, because doing so allows for stigma dilution—that is, organizations can reduce stakeholder disapproval by increasing their relative engagement in uncontested practices, thereby straddling multiple categories in the eyes of audiences. This line of argument, however, runs counter to the empirical observation that stigmatized practices often remain overwhelmingly concentrated within smaller, specialist organizations, even though these are often not optimally positioned to cope with stigma. In this paper, therefore, we undertake an in-depth historical analysis of a revelatory case—abortion provision in the United States following the landmark Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision—to build theory of how stigmatized categories can come to be populated predominantly by specialists. Building on primary and secondary archival materials, we identify three mechanisms that shaped category evolution and resulted in the de facto segregation of abortion into specialist organizations: the founding of freestanding facilities by values-driven providers, the exit of generalist organizations from the category, and the involuntary specialization of remaining providers, as customers no longer frequented them for other services and they soon became labeled simply as “abortion clinics.” We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings for the stigma literature and the generalizability of our theorizing to other settings.
