Abstract: Reducing the level of carbon intensity -i.e., the level of carbon emission -is an important issue in cooperate IT management. Drawing upon the belief-action-outcome (BAO) framework, this study examines the impact of two different IT resources -i.e., onpremises IT (OPIT) and on-demand IT (ODIT) -on a firm's carbon intensity. Also, we examine the moderating impact of green management strategies -i.e., environmental board oversight and environmental management incentives -on the effect of OPIT and ODIT on a firm's carbon intensity. Using panel data with a sample of 3074 observations collected from 864 firms from 2016 to 2019, we find that OPIT usage is positively associated with carbon intensity, whereas ODIT usage is negatively associated with carbon intensity. In addition, we find that, while environmental board oversight mitigates the positive direct impact of OPIT on carbon intensity, environmental management incentives reinforce the negative direct impact of ODIT on carbon intensity. Abstract: We examine how online searches lead to judgment formation in two contexts where statements are negated differently. In one context, a statement (of the form "if P then Q") is negated using "not" (as in "if P then not Q"), while in the other context, it is negated using a different term or phrase (as in "if P then R"). We show that online searches to find information about the validity of this statement generate different results in these contexts. Our findings contribute to extant work on online searches by suggesting that when individuals test the validity of a statement using search engines, their searches lead to categorically different results contingent on the search context. From a practical standpoint, we make recommendations to search engine developers and content providers so online searches generate more inclusive results. Collapse

Abstract: Initial coin offerings (ICOs) and initial exchange offerings (IEOs) are distinct blockchain-based token offerings. Following multiple frauds associated with decentralized and unregulated ICOs, IEOs are emerging as a novel pathway that relies on centralized crypto exchange platforms acting as intermediaries. However, the question as to how this shift affects fundraising processes in what has traditionally been a decentralized environment remains unresolved. We here address this issue by empirically comparing the performance of ICOs and IEOs through the lens of signaling theory, focusing specifically on the impact of social media information across 305 token offerings (ICOs and IEOs). Our work introduces IEOs and explains how and why the volume and sentiment of social media signals may serve as predictors of fundraising performance. We furthermore find that the impact of these electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) media signals is reduced in the case of IEOs—in the presence of a central cryptocurrency exchange platform mediator. We delineate implications for investors, ventures, platform providers, and regulators alike. Collapse

Abstract: A board of directors (BOD) plays a critical governance and strategic oversight role in an organization; acting as a fiduciary for shareholders, advising strategic decision making, and providing supportive resources and information to key decision makers. Especially critical is the role and contribution of corporate governance in guiding firm innovation. Such guidance has implications for investment in new products and services. In this paper, we examine the synergistic relationship between a firm’s BOD and technology and R&D inputs to innovation. We focus on the influence of the social capital of a BOD on different types of innovation. Our longitudinal findings show IT, R&D, and BOD social capital individually contribute to innovation performance, reflected in exploitative and exploratory innovation productivity. Moreover, BOD social capital enhances innovation enabled by IT activities. However, the combination of R&D activities and dimensions of BOD social capital leads to both negative and positive innovation performance. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic forced information workers across the world to work from home. This situation removes the physical boundary between work and home, impacting their work-life balance. How information workers configure the digital workplace (DWP) to manage their workplace boundaries and what effect this has on their individual job satisfaction remains unclear. To close this gap in the literature, 202 information workers completed an online survey. The findings partially confirm existing theory that more work flexibility increases job satisfaction while more work permeability decreases job satisfaction. However, depending on the flexibility and permeability of their work-home boundaries, the frequency with which information workers use DWP tools has cross-over effects on job satisfaction. The findings contribute to boundary theory and the new stream of digital workplace literature. Collapse

Abstract: With the advent of virtual reality (VR), immersive learning environments are considered as viable elearning environments. Yet, there is still no clarity on the long-term success with VR when learning. We examine the short-term and long-term learning outcomes between an illustrated text, 2D video, and VR. This is achieved through an experiment in which the effects of the three technologies on learning outcomes were measured immediately and 14 days after the learning phase. In the short-term, VR had a larger effect on subjectively and objectively measured knowledge gain as well as on motivation than the two other learning environments. In the long-term, VR did outperform the 2D video material on the desktop only when measured objectively. Our results imply that VR can transfer knowledge to the long-term better than other learning environments but more effort needs to be made to make the learning success more obvious on a subjective level.We draw our arguments for the effect of VR on learning outcome mainly from Multimedia Learning Theory (Mayer and Moreno, 1998). Abstract: Software components, such as application programming interfaces (APIs), provided by both the platform owner and external developers in a platform ecosystem are vital to online digital platforms. These APIs are associated with functionality provided by the platform. A larger number of APIs used is generally associated with an increase in the platform ecosystem’s variety of products. However, the precise nature of the relationship between the use of APIs and product variety in a platform ecosystem is not yet known because of the lack of appropriate methodologies to analyze the complex data generated in such platform ecosystems. Drawing on a recombinatorial design perspective, we use a dynamic network model to create metrics for product variety in a digital ecosystem and study how the use of different types of APIs affects product variety. In particular, we theorize that, contrary to existing models, the structure of APIs in a large platform ecosystem is not limited to a core–periphery structure, but includes an additional third layer that we refer to as the regular core. We further hypothesize that external APIs in the regular core play a crucial role in increasing product variety in the ecosystem. To test our hypothesis, we conduct an empirical study using longitudinal data of all available digital product (i.e., plug-in) source codes on WordPress.org, the world’s largest content management system and one of the most extensive digital platform ecosystems. By analyzing all of the plug-ins on WordPress over 10 years from its inception, we find the support of our three-layer structure of APIs in a platform ecosystem: complete core, regular core, and periphery. Our empirical analysis further supports the role of external APIs in the regular core in increasing product variety. Abstract: Online business-to-business auctions for used IT products have emerged as a viable market for finding a second life for these products, rather than having them end up in landfills as e-waste. As part of the growing “secondary market” landscape, these online B2B auctions are significantly affected by adverse selection since uncertainty about product quality from their first life remains in place. We study how these adverse selection costs may be identified and reduced in online B2B auctions for mobile phones using a proprietary data set for pallets of iPhone devices. We focus on the differences between carrier-locked and unlocked iPhones, and the degree to which the jailbreaking of devices may lead to adverse selection costs. We first show that uncertainty with respect to the possibility of jailbreaking-to-unlock induces significant adverse selection costs in this market. We identify a clear method that these adverse selection costs may be reduced through policies implemented in the primary market. We find that adverse selection costs exist with respect to jailbreaking-to-unlock, by comparing prices obtained for locked and unlocked devices, as well as pallets where this information is not disclosed. However, when some of the uncertainty surrounding jailbreaking-to-unlock is removed by virtue of an exogenous policy change implemented by Verizon in the primary market, i.e., to sell all iPhones as factory unlocked, adverse selection costs are significantly reduced. Our work has significant implications for enhancing the efficiency of secondary markets for IT products, by virtue of highlighting the connections between primary and secondary markets. Managerial and theoretical implications that emerge from this work are discussed in the paper. Collapse

Abstract: In an increasingly digital world, C-level information technology experts (CITEs) such as CIOs and CTOs are playing an increasingly indispensable role in leading IT initiatives. Despite this, recent research shows a lack of oversight by the board of directors over the IT function due to the "IT confidence gap" of directors with no IT expertise. This has resulted in the emergence of a recent trend of appointing CITEs to the board of directors. However, there is little research on whether such appointments result in value creation for the appointing firms. We use perspectives from agency and resource dependence theories to examine two value impacts of CITE director appointments to address this question. We suggest that CITE director appointments create signaling value by enhancing the firm's ability to signal their intention to institute more effective oversight of the IT function and subsequently accumulate value in the form of share price reaction to appointment announcements. Correspondingly, CITE directors' human and relational capital application also creates substantive value in the form of firm financial performance over a longer duration. Using an event study and hierarchical linear modeling, our analysis of 334 CITE director appointments largely supports our contention that the human and relational capital of CITE directors and their appointment in firms facing IT-related contextual conditions results in both a positive share price reaction and better firm financial performance over the long term. We conclude that appointing CITE directors with the appropriate capital under certain contextual conditions leads to firm value creation. Collapse

Abstract: Price-oriented functions have been prevalently used by sellers for attracting consumers on e-marketplace platforms. However, existing literature has mixed understandings about its influence on improving consumer satisfaction. Besides, few studies have considered how cause-related marketing moderates the impact of price-oriented function usage. Therefore, this paper firstly explores the curvilinear relationship between priceoriented function usage and consumer satisfaction by adopting the repertoire perspective, then further considers the moderating role of cause-related marketing. This study collected data on 29,506 products from one e-marketplace platform in China. By using fixed-effects regression models, it is found that price-oriented function usage (i.e., volume and heterogeneity) have inverted U-shaped relationships with consumer satisfaction. In addition, cause-related marketing weakens the impact of price-oriented function usage heterogeneity on consumer satisfaction. This study contributes to research about platform function usage and guides sellers in terms of using those functions to stimulate consumer satisfaction. Collapse
