Abstract: Immigrant integration has become a primary political concern for leaders in Germany and the United States. The information systems (IS) community has begun to research how information and communications technologies can assist immigrants and refugees, such as by examining how countries can facilitate social-inclusion processes. Migrants face the challenge of joining closed communities that cannot integrate or fear doing so. We conducted a panel discussion at the 2019 Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) in Cancun, Mexico, to introduce multiple viewpoints on immigration. In particular, the panel discussed how technology can both support and prevent immigrants from succeeding in their quest. We conducted the panel to stimulate a thoughtful and dynamic discussion on best practices and recommendations to enhance the discipline's impact on alleviating the challenges that occur for immigrants in their host countries. In this panel report, we introduce the topic of using ICT to help immigrants integrate and identify differences between North/Central America and Europe. We also discuss how immigrants (particularly refugees) use ICT to connect with others, feel that they belong, and maintain their identity. We also uncover the dark and bright sides of how governments use ICT to deter illegal immigration. Finally, we present recommendations for researchers and practitioners on how to best use ICT to assist with immigration. She is an AIS Fellow, Senior Scholar and recipient of the Association for Information System's LEO Award for Lifetime Achievement. Bentley University designated her as Scholar of the Year and a Mee Family Prize winner, the University's highest award recognizing a lifetime of scholarly achievement. She has published over 100 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. Her current research uses multiple methods to examine the use of social media by police departments and their communities. She has been principal investigator of a National Science Foundation project team studying design issues for police and government agency collaboration using public safety networks. Her transdisciplinary research appears in a wide range of IS, e-government, accounting, and general business journals. Collapse

Abstract: Research and practice in the information systems (IS) field have been evolving over time, nourishing and promoting the development of applications that transform the relationships of individuals, corporations, and governments. Building on this evolution, we push forward a vision of the potential influence of the IS field into one of the most important problems of our times, an increasingly unsustainable world, which is traditionally considered the product of imperfect markets or market externalities. We describe our work in Full Information Product Pricing (FIPP) and our vision of a FIPP global socio-technical system, I-Choose, as a way to connect consumer choice and values with environmental, social, and economic effects of production and distribution practices. FIPP and I-Choose represent a vision about how information systems research can contribute to interdisciplinary research in supply chains, governance, and market economies to provide consumers with information packages that help them better understand how, where, and by whom the products they buy are produced. We believe that such a system will have important implications for international trade and agreements, for public policy, and for making a more sustainable world. Collapse

Abstract: The agility literature suggests a positive relationship between IT-investments, agility, and performance for firms operating in turbulent contexts. However, agility studies have primarily focused on conceptual concerns, leaving these relationships empirically unexplored. In addition, the literature has focused on for-profit firms operating in commercial markets, thereby leaving other important organizational types unexamined; one such type is the social enterprise (SE). SEs are entrepreneurial organizations with a mission to improve complex social challenges (i.e., healthcare, hunger, education, etc) rather than profit maximization. This void leaves SEs in the dark as to how they can leverage IT to become more agile and improve performance. We draw on the agility perspective to examine how one exemplary SE operating in the context of pediatric global health utilized IT to enhance its agility and improve performance. We identify how the SE's IT-investment decisions resulted in an IT platform that facilitated increased agility in launching new products aimed at improving survival rates of children. Specifically, we analyze how the SE's IT platform positively impacted customer, partnering, and operational agility, and demonstrate how this led to dramatic improvements in performance. Abstract: Online communities like Wikipedia have the potential to transform our global society. Despite their growing importance, however, the extant literature has theorized only little about how member contribution behavior in a nascent online community emerges in interaction with the materiality of the technology platform. Studying this is critical for understanding the important early stage evolution of online communities. Without a rich history, the platform’s materiality is almost the only thing that members can use to make sense of the online community. We investigate this question by applying a mixedmethod approach to a longitudinal case study of AshokaHub, a nascent global online community of social entrepreneurs. We use an affordance perspective and our findings to date suggest that the materiality of the technology platform plays an important role in the emergence of member contribution behavior in the nascent online community. Abstract: This study examines how IT influences the extent of internationalization of firms by using firmlevel data on the IT investments and international operations of US multinationals for the 19992005 period. We identify managerial/operational complexity, geographic dispersion of subunits, and contextual differences between home and host countries as the main challenges involved in internationalization, and investigate whether IT plays a role in resolving these challenges. Our results suggest that firms’ IT capability plays an important role in their internationalization by resolving the aforementioned challenges. Moreover, a firm’s IT capability (as reflected in its IT investments) and production knowledge (as reflected in its R&D investments) are complementary in their influence on the internationalization of the firm. Given the lack of firm-level empirical evidence on the role of IT in the internationalization and global operations of firms, the current study provides a richer understanding of the impact of IT on firms’ international operations. Abstract: The diffusion process of information and communication technology for mobile telephones, personal computers and internet users seems to follow the Bass’ diffusion model in most nations, but some of the factors affecting diffusion speeds are still unidentified. Abstract: This study investigates experts' assessments of the pertinent factors affecting e-business in developing countries from a theory-based national infrastructure perspective. We surveyed experts (business people, academicians, and officials of governmental and non-governmental organizations) in e-business in Latin America (LA) and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Our partial least squares analysis shows that experts believed that policies targeted specifically toward e-business are important in affecting e-business capabilities and in obtaining value from e-business, more so than non-specific general information and communication technologies (ICT) policies, which are not significantly influential. ICT infrastructure generally affects e-business capabilities, though this was not found to be the case in Brazil. Experts believed that national government institutions positively affect e-business value in SSA, but not in LA. Experts did not believe that commercial infrastructure significantly affects e-business value. This study theoretically and empirically distinguishes between two different dimensions of e-business outcomes: specific capabilities and value derived from e-business. It operationalizes the effects of national government institutions and commercial infrastructure on e-business outcomes and empirically tests for their effects. The study provides empirical support for conceptual arguments for the need of ICT policies specific to the needs of e-business. Collapse

Abstract: Current data warehouse and OLAP technologies are applied to analyze the structured data that companies store in databases. The context that helps to understand data over time is usually described separately in text-rich documents. This paper proposes to integrate the traditional corporate data warehouse with a document warehouse, resulting in a contextualized warehouse. Thus, the user first selects an analysis context by supplying some keywords. Then, the analysis is performed on a novel type of OLAP cube, called an R-cube, which is materialized by retrieving and ranking the documents and corporate facts related to the selected context. Abstract: In this paper the authors propose an ICT architecture for the support of collaborative tasks within a dispersed sales force training process in multinational pharmaceutical companies. Four areas of collaboration are identified through case studies. Each of these areas comprises a certain number of collaborative tasks. The equivocality and complexity of these tasks have to be taken into account when considering ICT support. The authors used a task-media-fit-matrix to decide on and justify usage of certain information and communication technologies for the support of collaborative tasks. The task-media-fitmatrix, in our opinion, can help both practitioners and researchers in either justifying investments in e-collaboration tools or evaluating ICT architectures in the field of ecollaboration. Abstract: The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of negotiation strategies, behaviors, and outcomes, and the relationships between these factors based on data collected from questionnaires, actual behavior during the negotiation process implemented using e-negotiation system, and the negotiation outcomes. This study clustered the negotiators based on either the negotiators' own strategies or their thoughts about those of their partners. This resulted in a division into cooperative and noncooperative clusters. We found that the negotiators whose own strategies are less cooperative tend to submit more offers but fewer messages. However, these people consIDer that they have less control over the negotiation process compared with those who adopt a more cooperative strategy, who make fewer offers but send more messages. Those in the cooperative cluster consistently feel friendlier about the negotiation and more satisfied with the outcome and their performance. Further, there is a correlation not only between self-strategies and the thoughts about partners' strategies, but also between strategies and final agreements. Finally, the proportion of negotiations reaching agreement is larger for the cooperative cluster than for the noncooperative cluster. Collapse
