Abstract: As the current global pandemic continues to impinge on organizations' operations worldwide, balancing the tensions imposed by the turbulent environment is becoming necessary to endure the crisis. This difficult balancing act calls for a different type of agility than previously explored. In extreme contexts, such as this one, digital platforms are becoming instrumental in helping organizations realize digital agility, by shifting to new modes of operation in order to survive. This research employs a case study of a rapidly changing digital platform, within an Australian university. By drawing on the theories of coevolution and punctuated equilibrium as the combined theoretical lens, we theorize a number of mechanisms of coevolution, which explain the dynamic and mutually-shaping relationship between the organization's responses and digital platform's modules. The findings show that digital agility is achieved through a series of fast adaptations between the strategic and the digital platform levels and their environment. Abstract: Project complexity is becoming increasingly challenging for project managers. Much research has been done on the concept of project complexity. The majority has focused on identifying the dimensions and drivers of the complexity; not enough research has been concentrated on finding guiding principles to support the practitioners of project management in their struggles to lead complex projects. This paper presents a design of an artifact with this purpose. The artifact is currently in a process of formative evaluation in an interactive DSR process. The preliminary evaluation indicates a high degree of relevance for practitioners in terms of sense-making, but there is a need for more development on the utilization part of the artifact. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations are caught in a struggle to capitalize on existing strengths and competencies whilst pursuing new opportunities. To succeed, they must strike a balance between exploration and exploitation (March, 1991). A significant amount of research looks at how ambidextrous organizations do both simultaneously; but fails to address key questions about exploration and exploitation (i) in novel settings, (ii) at a micro level, (iii) over time. In particular, few studies take the impact on environment novelty into account or look at the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). This study therefore investigates the dynamics of organizational exploration and exploitation in the virtual world of Second life. The study reveals that transitions between exploration and exploitation are triggered by changes in perceived environmental complexity over time. The paper presents a new conceptual framework which identifies some of the main factors affecting the dynamics of this process and shows how their significance changes over time. Collapse

Abstract: Crises are characterized by complexity, uncertainty and their dynamic evolution. Neither the development of the situation nor the consequences of a decision can be foreseen. Therefore, crisis management requires plans and strategies that are designed to account for lacking information and sudden system changes. With the rise of ICT systems, large amounts of data from heterogeneous sources are available to decision-makers that quickly need to be transformed into understandable and reliable information. Hence, the need arises for support in collecting and processing information that can be used for the continuous revision and updating of plans and strategies as an answer to the uncertainty and complexity that they entail. We build on notions from decision theory, emergency and risk management, complexity science and systems theory to conclude that epistemological pluralism and adequate ad-hoc approaches need to be integrated in the design of decision support systems for crisis and emergency management. Abstract: A new age of significance and opportunity for Information Systems (IS) is upon us driven by current developments in the use of digital artifacts. In this paper we endeavor to make sense of contemporary IS, as well as possible future directions of IS, by bringing together the notions of complexity and activity within two theoretical frameworks, namely the Cynefin framework and contemporary uses of Activity Theory. We describe activity as a holistic unit of analysis within the Complicated and Complex Domains of the Cynefin framework. This will enable us to make sense of tool-mediated IS activities in those Domains. Our proposed research philosophy blends these frameworks to support new thinking about IS that impacts on our choices of research methods, the way we apply them and the way we modify them as the world we study evolves into an uncertain future context. Abstract: IS research and practice does not adequately address modern organizational forms of flatter hierarchies; decentralized decision-making, greater capacity for tolerance of ambiguity, permeable internal and external boundaries, capacity for renewal, self-organizing units, selfintegrating coordination mechanisms and continual change. The important challenge for IS is to determine what sort of organizational forms, structures and systems are most appropriate to meet the demands of the current and foreseeable environment. We argue that this challenge can be met through a new agenda for IS based on the concept of the ‘sensible organization’. Our argument is grounded in evidence drawn from the findings of a number of our empirical studies. We conclude that the new agenda for IS needs to targets the agile, social and networked organization, in the context of its chaotic, complex environment, in order to support knowledge work practices that integrate thinking and doing.
