Responsible innovation with digital platforms: Cases in India and Canada

Abstract: Marginalized communities globally encounter grand challenges such as lack of access to education, healthcare, and sustained livelihoods. Several initiatives to address these complex, global problems have resulted in fragmented solutions. Recognizing this, there have been several calls for the study of responsible innovation (RI) to address grand challenges. Digital platforms such as AirBnB, Uber and so forth have now become commonplace and are known to generate economic value but also face criticism for being exploitative and exclusive. Only a handful of studies show how similar platforms can innovate responsibly to serve marginalized communities by generating simultaneous economic and social value. To address this gap, our study examines the cases of two platforms that orchestrated ecosystems consisting of individuals from marginalized communities, government agencies, and other entities to provide physical, digital and societal solutions based on principles of RI. We contribute to the RI and IS literatures to show how RI solutions can be fostered through digital platforms to address grand challenges. The article provides empirical evidence of all four dimensions of the RI framework—anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion, and responsiveness - and their operationalization through digital platforms. This research lays the foundation for future studies at the intersection of RI and digital platforms literature. The study also provides practice insights on developing digital platform solutions for marginalized communities to address grand challenges and is useful to policymakers to formulate appropriate interventions. It pushes the theoretical and practice boundaries of our understanding of RI and digital platforms. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates the design considerations for health information technologies (HITs) that are aimed at supporting lower socioeconomic status (SES) individuals in addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) needs. While emerging technologies offer new opportunities for improving quality of life outcomes, many lower SES individuals may be novice users of digital health technologies, including SDOH technologies. To address this gap, we conducted qualitative research using user-centered design tools during the development of an app designed to help individuals address SDOH needs. Our findings provide insight into the unique characteristics, needs, and preferences of lower SES digital novices, and highlight multiple aspects of their eHealth literacy. We discuss the implications of these findings for designing and implementing HITs for novice users. Collapse

Abstract: As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming more prevalent in everyday work settings, the Information Systems (IS) discipline is perfectly poised to study the sociotechnical repercussions of AI supported decision-making part of expert's knowledge work. As expert know-how is tacit and socially situated, there are difficulties in capturing the nuances of the emerging human-machine collaborations. In this article, we review how epistemic uncertainty is evident in experts' decision-making practices when using AI tools. Building on rich primary studies, a qualitative evidence synthesis (QES) approach was used to synthesize relevant literature on this topic. Our findings unravel sources of expert uncertainty which point to strategies experts use to cope with uncertainty, and what attitudes experts have towards uncertainty when making complex decisions with AI-tools. Abstract: With advances in computing and a preference for convenience in completing digital tasks, conversational agents (CAs) have gained widespread popularity throughout the world. However, most of the CAs seem to lack several necessary capabilities to satisfy the users' needs. Our study focused on text-based CAs (also known as chatbots) and examines the factors associated with their performance. The literature on IS success and adoption suggest that various factors related to the technology, users, and tasks can jointly play a role in satisfying user needs. Thus, we adopt a holistic approach to evaluating chatbot performance by identifying chatbot attributes, user attributes, and task attributes and their impact on chatbot performance from the users' view. We conducted interviews with chatbot users and using a qualitative approach, provide a theoretical framework for chatbot performance evaluation. All the interviews were conducted with the users of rule-based chatbots as these are widely used by all sizes of organizations. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation (DT) continuously reshapes and disrupts established industries. While DT has become a buzzworthy trend, many firms still struggle to advance their DT journeys. As such, we explore the drivers of DT, and the challenges managers encounter as DT is manifested in practice in traditional industries. By adopting a qualitative approach, we gain insight into senior managers’ perspectives on DT in the context of the Swedish forestry industry. Our results reveal that the drivers of DT in traditional industries hinge on organizational structures, innovation direction, and organizational identity being changed to prevail. Our study extends research on DT in traditional industries and highlights probable areas of concern that industry practitioners can probe during their organizations’ transformation journeys. Abstract: During shocks, residents and businesses rely upon the government to ensure health, safety, and the continuity of services. The government's ability to respond depends upon how well it utilizes its data resources and builds digital resilience. Yet governments often fail to integrate data from different agencies to respond effectively to shocks. We conceptualize digital resilience as a dynamic capability (DC). Although the DC framework provides a theoretical basis, it is unclear what actions managers can take to build DC. Through process tracing, we examine how the Commonwealth of Virginia (COVA) built DCs and rebounded from two shocks-the opioid crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. COVA managers leveraged statewide data assets, built routines to disseminate data, and reconfigured operational capabilities to build three DCsrelationship building, intelligence creation, and value extraction. Data functioned as the "protein" to build the digital resilience "muscle." We found that the relationship building DC leveraged the operational capabilities of data management, integration, and governance structure to foster data sharing, the intelligence creation DC leveraged analytics, and the value extraction DC converted analytics into cost savings, revenue generation, and new services. Whereas COVA built robust digital resilience by facilitating data sharing, the agencies exploited data assets to develop scalable solutions. Collapse

Abstract: Digital health interventions (DHIs) show great promise in empowering patients to take positive action toward their self-care by helping them with chronic disease self-management efforts. However, problematic user engagement with DHIs is a key issue preventing the full realization of DHI benefits. DHI design issues, such as lack of personal relevance, can negatively impact user engagement and consequently prevent patients from entering the empowerment process. The literature recognizes that avatars can be used to assimilate a self-concept during humancomputer interaction and enhance personal relevance through self-presence. Yet, little is known about designing avatars to achieve self-presence in the context of digital health. This paper reports the results of a design science research study that explores key design elements that can facilitate a personal connection between users and technology by inducing self-presence through avatars. This study has implications for the theory-driven design of DHI to engage users with chronic conditions. Collapse

Abstract: In this research in progress paper, we discuss the acceptance and appropriation of workplace mobile health interventions aiming to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour, and how this is connected to social cohesion in the workplace. We utilised script theory to investigate what visions, assumptions and choice is made by developers in the design of the mobile health technology, and the consequences this hold in regards of user mobilisation and the effects of the intervention at the workplace. We report preliminary findings from four different workplaces, and with a total of 709 users. We contribute by discussing the importance of flexibility of the Avantas Aktiv script, how the script is accepted by some and rejected by others, and how social cohesion is both a result of and a premise for successful mobilisation of users. Abstract: Since the 1970s, many approaches to representing domains have been suggested. Each approach maintains the assumption that the information about the objects represented in the information system (IS) is specified and verified by domain experts and potential users. Yet, as more IS are developed to support a larger diversity of users such as customers, suppliers, and members of the general public (e.g., in the case of many multiuser online systems), analysts can no longer rely on a stable single group of people for the complete specification of domains; therefore, prior research has questioned the efficacy of conceptual modeling in these heterogeneous settings. This paper aims to address this problem by providing theoretical foundations rooted in psychology research supporting the existence and importance of special classes that are termed basic-level categories. Based on this research, we formulate principles for identifying basic classes in a domain. These classes can guide conceptual modeling, database design, and user interface development in a wide variety of traditional and emergent domains. Collapse

Abstract: As organizations recognize the importance of open innovation, understanding emerging mechanisms for soliciting outside participation is a growing area of academic interest. Strategies can be as diverse as hosting innovation contests, sponsoring open source software (OSS) communities, or engaging in bilateral partnerships. While these have been studied as distinct strategies, more recent work has identified the possibility for combining these approaches, or deploying different methods at different times. Because each of these open innovation strategies are characterized by different incentive systems as well as different work and social practices, the combination of these can reveal unexpected participant responses (e.g., collaboration in innovation contests, competitive behavior in OSS communities). This study examines an explicit attempt to combine these strategies, to host an open source innovation contest. Through the case of Google's Android Developer Challenge, a series of multi-million dollar innovation contests used to launch an OSS community over several years, this study utilized a process approach to understanding open source innovation contests to understand how participants responded and also how the contest conditions changed over time. We found several practices of competition and collaboration that worked around the short term and long term incentives and constraints posed by the contest. We also followed the contest through various transition phases and found that participants reacted strongly to changes in structure, execution, and shifting conditions over time. Through this case, we extend our understanding of innovation contests as a process and specifically the promises and pitfalls of open source innovation contests. Collapse
