Abstract: Solving complex problems was named a new challenge for research on human-AI collaboration. In our study we focus on a particular means to solving complex problems: design science research (DSR). We investigate whether AI, more specifically, generative language models (GLM), can support an individual in conceptualizing DSR studies by making helpful suggestions. To do so we use extracts of a published DSR study and have GPT-3, a GLM provide suggestions for aspects of this study. These suggestions are then evaluated in a survey (n=33) regarding their helpfulness. Results show that GLM suggestions are perceived to be helpful, with some variation depending on expertise. Reported interest in using such a tool in the future was high. Describing how GLMs can offer helpful suggestions we contribute toward a DSR tool support ecosystem and, more generally, towards knowledge on how humans and (generative) AI systems can team up to solve complex problems. Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore the drivers of job satisfaction of IT workers in the East Asian context, particularly in Taiwan, Japan, and China. Using data collected from IT workers, decision tree inductions were employed to identify the predictors of job satisfaction. Results indicate that the level of education has no effect on job satisfaction. Overall, higher uncertainty avoidance results in lower job satisfaction, and more experienced IT workers appear to be more satisfied. In Taiwan, longer serving IT workers, who are likely to hold more senior positions and spend more time on the job, are more satisfied with their jobs. Similarly, in Japan, older IT workers are more satisfied. In China, job satisfaction of IT workers differs across job roles and industries. It is recommended that management practices and policies in Taiwan focus on bridging gaps between longer serving and newer IT workers in terms of their ability to handle ambiguous work situations; whereas in Japan, these should focus on providing work flexibility and stress management programs to allow room for family support. In China, these should be tailored to specific job roles and industries in view of their different experiences with job satisfaction determinants. Collapse

Abstract: Maintaining a private life in our digital world is gradually becoming harder. With Internet services having ever increasing access to personal data, it is crucial to raise user awareness about what privacy guarantees they offer. Regulations have recently been enacted such as the European General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR). Yet, online service providers still have terms and privacy policies to which users tend to agree without ever viewing or reading them. By using digital nudges, this paper explores how small changes in the choice architecture can be designed to increase the informed consent and privacy awareness of users. The results from a double-blind online experiment (n = 183) show that phrasing the agreement differently and providing a highlights alternative to the existing quick-join choice architecture can significantly increase the number of users who view and read the terms and privacy policy. However, these digital nudges seem to not increase the users' recollection of what they have agreed to. The experimental results are complemented by a field test using one of the proposed designs in the IKEA Place app (n = 81'431). Collapse

Abstract: A voting center is in charge of collecting and aggregating voter preferences. In an iterative process, the center sends comparison queries to voters, requesting them to submit their preference between two items. Voters might discuss the candidates among themselves, figuring out during the elicitation process which candidates stand a chance of winning and which do not. Consequently, strategic voters might attempt to manipulate by deviating from their true preferences and instead submit a different response in order to attempt to maximize their profit. We provide a practical algorithm for strategic voters which computes the best manipulative vote and maximizes the voter’s selfish outcome when such a vote exists. We also provide a careful voting center which is aware of the possible manipulations and avoids manipulative queries when possible. In an empirical study on four real world domains, we show that in practice manipulation occurs in a low percentage of settings and has a low impact on the final outcome. The careful voting center reduces manipulation even further, thus allowing for a non-distorted group decision process to take place.We thus provide a core technology study of a voting process that can be adopted in opinion or information aggregation systems and in crowdsourcing applications, e.g., peer grading in massive open online courses. Abstract: In cross-cultural business negotiation, culture is known to influence negotiation processes. As a lens to study this effect we deployed the Lemon Car Game, an online negotiation game developed for this purpose (Hofstede et al. in: Proceedings of 39th international simulation and gaming association conference (ISAGA). Technologia, Kaunas, pp 39–46, 2009a; Hofstede et al. in: David, Sichman (eds) Multi-agent-based simulation IX, international workshop, MABS 2008, revised selected papers, LNAI 5269. Springer, Berlin, pp 1–16, 2009b). In this article we report the results from the game, obtained from over 800 players from more than 70 countries. We employ several complementary analyses in a mixed-methods approach. Our findings show that to make sense of the players’ actions during negotiation, economic rationality falls short. A pan-cultural individual-level analysis of actions and stated intentions also fails to yield a coherent picture. Within countries, however, actions and intentions do cohere, as shown by an ecological country-level factor analysis, from which three factors emerge for the sellers at country level: trustworthiness, opportunism, and fairness. We conclude from these findings that, in this game, players are driven by what we call relational rationality: they are rational from the perspective of the social world in which they live, with interpersonal relationships weighing heavily. Relational rationality changes players’ perspective of economic rationality, and thus their observed behaviour in negotiation. Based on this evidence, we extrapolate that relational rationality significantly influences negotiation processes in all cultures. Collapse

Abstract: Non-verbal communication cues, e.g. facial expressions, and their surrogates in computermediated communication, emoticons, influence how a message is understood. Based on the four-ear model of communication, we examine in detail how emoticons affect message perception. More specifically, we examine the different effects of three emoticons [:-) :-( ;-)] on the four levels that define communication. Using a factorial survey with a treatment control group design (N = 231), our findings suggest that emoticon usage does not influence the understanding of a message at the factual information and appeal levels. However, we show that the usage of happy and ironic emoticons significantly shapes the subtext of a message, namely the relationship and self-revelation level, whereas sad emoticons do not have such an effect. These findings hold practical implications: Most importantly, senders can use happy and ironic emoticons to soften their email messages’ illocutionary force at the relationship level and self-revelation level. Abstract: Recent studies have indicated that companies are increasingly experiencing Data Quality (DQ) related problems as more complex data are being collected. To address such problems, the literature suggests the implementation of a Total Data Quality Management Program (TDQM) that should consist of the following phases: DQ definition, measurement, analysis and improvement. As such, this paper performs an empirical study using a questionnaire that was distributed to financial institutions worldwide to identify the most important DQ dimensions, to assess the DQ level of credit risk databases using the identified DQ dimensions, to analyze DQ issues and to suggest improvement actions in a credit risk assessment context. This questionnaire is structured according to the framework of Wang and Strong and incorporates three additional DQ dimensions that were found to be important to the current context (i.e., actionable, alignment and traceable). Additionally, this paper contributes to the literature by developing a scorecard index to assess the DQ level of credit risk databases using the DQ dimensions that were identified as most important. Finally, this study explores the key DQ challenges and causes of DQ problems and suggests improvement actions. The findings from the statistical analysis of the empirical study delineate the nine most important DQ dimensions, which include accuracy and security for assessing the DQ level. Collapse
