Abstract: Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) have the power to influence lecturers’ practices in the classroom and to improve students’ learning. Many ITS provide standardized analytical methods to evaluate classroom performance or the results of the exercises. But they lack more sophisticated, flexible and individual analyses. This paper presents an e-learning Analytics Tool (EAT) for an ITS that provides a dashboard with key figures and a flexible analytics board (FAB). This enables lecturers to analyze students’ performance in detail and identify misconceptions. For instance, the FAB allows us to classify student solutions, reveal conceptual errors in exercises, and analyze each part of an exercise. By this, common mistakes can be identified, and tailored feedback can be given to the students. Following the design science approach, the platform is designed in a general way so that it can be used for different types of exercises (e.g., Math, Excel, SQL). To assess the artifact, we conducted group interviews with German University lecturers from various courses. The results show that lecturers require a good overview of the submitted student solutions to provide timely feedback. They also appreciate the flexible analytics tool for detailed analyses of student solutions to understand student mistakes better. The employed architecture allows general analyses of exercises and the content of students’ solutions. In addition, the EAT is not bound to a specific kind of exercise, but can cope with different kinds like SQL and Excel. Collapse

Abstract: The curation of data is fundamental to their wider dissemination and use. This paper investigates the frames of workers who perform data curation in scientific contexts. We view data curation as a sense-making practice, where workers collaborate to disseminate meaningful data to a broad set of prospective users. Previous Information Systems investigations have suggested that data-related activities are dependent on workers' understanding of their local work context. We expand this with an evolving and longterm view. We use a stepwise-deductive induction method to examine how scientists understand the work involved in curating scientific data for public sharing. We draw on frames as the theoretical lens of the study that enables us to identify three data sharing frames -the object, curation, and aligning frames -as important frames that shape how scientists curate data for public sharing. Our analysis provides a deeper understanding of the nuances of managing scientific data for public access. Our main contribution is the articulation of an evolving and long-term view of how workers approach their tasks in getting data ready for long-term public use. Collapse

Abstract: This literature review used and expanded Cardullo & Kitchin's (2018) "scaffold of smart citizen participation" to classify the participation level found in the smart governance literature. This review highlights the importance of the use of a common metric for measuring citizens level of participation in smart governance. The departure point of this work is the literature review developed by Tomor et al. (2019). Their review was updated and compared. We confirmed some challenges positioned by the literature on the indiscriminate use of citizen participation as both an intrinsic characteristic of governance and as an outcome of the collaboration (Meijer & Bolívar, 2015;Tomor et al., 2019). This lack of a common understanding of the level of citizen autonomy creates a confusion in the literature regarding the actual level of participation, which highlights a need for further research about citizen participation and collaboration in smart governance. Abstract: Digitalization is rapidly changing markets and workplaces with digital technologies intrinsically embedded in organizational processes. Inherent complexities in digital technologies require organizations and individuals to adjust and adapt to technologies and work practices to meet organizational goals. Adaptations enable continued use, avoiding IS non-adoption, but can be detrimental to efficiency and performance. The double-sided nature of adaptations motivates this research to examine the emergence of adaptations in digitized care processes in Telemedicine. Digital technologies are increasingly used in Telemedicine, blurring spatial and temporal boundaries of care and interactions. Adaptive Structuration Theory is used to analyze the adaptation mechanisms and the triggers for adaptations. A qualitative field study is conducted in two public hospitals in India. Findings show that users adapt technology, tasks, and roles and enact role multiplexities, resulting in new structures. The study contributes to the literature on changing work practices in Telemedicine that alter spatial organization of care and interactions. Collapse

Abstract: With the proliferation of data has arisen an array of information visualization tools to help humans convert data to information for better decision-making. This ever-expanding visualization toolset has outrun the development of theories of data visualization usage for decision support. In the current research, we contribute to the development of visualization theories in two ways. First, we incorporate our understanding of evolutionary adaptations into the cognitive fit theory to explain why 3-D surface graphs often outperform traditional 2-D graphs in various sensemaking tasks. Drawing on geon theory to interpret the 3-D advantage, we develop the concept of geonic/non-geonic information representations and tasks. We tested and found support for our hy­ potheses that geonic representations have a speed advantage for the tasks we studied, derived from the human evolved capacity for geographic orienteering, but accuracy depends on the match of representation and task, as geonic or non-geonic. Our experiment compared the geonic representation (3-D surface graph) to non-geonic planar representations (cluster bar, heat map, and line) in geonic (integration, proportion) and non-geonic atomic (acquisition, comparison) tasks. For our second contribution, we build on this result to expand the cognitive fit model to incorporate classic human information processes and evolutionary adaptations. We suggest that the cognitive fit model can expand to include new advances in neuroscience. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our experiment and our expanded model. Collapse

Abstract: A career in information technology (IT) presents a viable source of economic advancement for college graduates, yet ethnic minority students remain underrepresented in the IT workforce. Such underrepresentation is often exacerbated by their first-generation student (FGS) status. It, however, remains unclear what causes the discrepancy between FGSs and their counterparts in terms of their choice to enter into an IT career. To address this gap, this study aims to reveal the factors motivating FGSs to consider an IT career and examines the association of influencing factors with personal and demographic factors (gender, race, ethnicity). This qualitative research overlays capital theory and social cognitive career theory to develop an integrated sensitizing framework and draws on individual difference theory in interpreting the findings. Our analysis of the open-ended narrative responses of 193 surveys collected from a minority-serving university revealed 10 key factors influencing IT career choice. A theoretical model incorporating individual differences, generational status, and environmental influences is proposed to advance the discussion of influencing factors in IT career choice toward further theory building and empirical testing. The paper concludes with implications for motivating the IT career choice of the ethnic minority, first-generation student population. established career theory, premises various forms of capital as enablers of career decisions (Bourdieu, 1986), and has been previously applied in the information systems (IS) literature (e.g., Joshi et al., 2016). This qualitative positivist case study research develops an analytical generalization (Galli, 2011) regarding the IT career choices of ethnic minority college students. This approach is appropriate for identifying the applicability of key constructs for this population as we investigate their IT career choices. This paper proceeds as follows: We describe the context of our investigation in Section 2 and then review research on IT careers, social cognitive career theory, and capital theory, and their use in the IT context in Section 3. In Section 4, we present our research method and illustrate the data analysis procedures, and in Section 5, we detail the results regarding the motivating factors. In Section 6, we discuss the themes that emerge in ethnic minority college students' IT career choice motivations and propose a variance model based on prior research and our empirical findings. We discuss the study's contributions to theory and practice in Section 7, followed by the study's limitations and future research directions in Section 8. Collapse

Abstract: Patent management tasks involve many stakeholders from diverse disciplines and hierarchies as well as from inside and outside the organization. By drawing on the transaction cost and stakeholder theories, Blockchain technology offers new opportunities to rethink the way in which stakeholders are organized and collaborate. Although Blockchain technology receives considerable attention from both the public and academia, the question of how Blockchain technology leverages patent management in particular has so far been neglected, although it holds great promise. Consequently, this is what we choose to be our basic research question. In response to it, we conduct a systematic literature review, following a procedure in three steps. Out of an initial sample of 714 articles, we select 52 as being particularly relevant, and classify them in accordance with the dimensions of the 7D Patent Management Maturity Model. Three main foci regarding the use of Blockchain technology emerge – i. e. for the generation, the enforcement, and the exploitation of patents. This study contributes to scholarship and management by showing that Blockchain technology mitigates environmental and behavioral uncertainty, while stimulating new governance forms and business models by reorganizing or discarding stakeholders. Abstract: Requests for a coordinated response during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the limitations of locally-operating public health agencies (PHAs) and have resulted in a growing interest in their digitalization. However, digitalizing PHAs – i.e., transforming them technically and organizationally – toward the needs of both employees and citizens is challenging, especially in federally-managed local government settings. This paper reports on a project that develops and evaluates a continuous (vs. a staged) maturity model, the PHAMM, for digitalizing PHAs as a cornerstone of a digitally resilient public health system in the future. The model supports a coordinated approach to formulating a vision and structuring the steps toward it, engaging employees along the transformation journey necessary for a federally-managed field. Further, it is now being used to allocate substantial national funds to foster digitalization. By developing the model in a coordinated approach and using it for distributing federal resources, this work expands the potential usage cases for maturity models. The authors conclude with lessons learned and discuss how the model can incentivize local digitalization in federal fields. Collapse

Abstract: This paper used web scraping and data mining to analyze 831 health informatics job advertisements on indeed.com. Results showed that 87% of jobs explicitly required a college degree in a related field, 41% of jobs preferred a graduate degree, while 29% preferred or required professional certification. The analysis showed that preferred skills were analytics problem solving, communication skills, oral communication, interpersonal skills, project management, statistics, and critical thinking. The analysis also showed that college degrees, certifications, and the above-mentioned skill set are in high demand for working in the field of health informatics, especially in states with large populations and strong economies. Our results inform curriculum development of health informatics programs in higher education, which helps map knowledge units across the curricula to bridge the skills gap and meet employers' expectations. At the same time, the results help job seekers familiarize themselves with what employers seek in a successful candidate. Collapse

Abstract: Consumers play an increasingly central role in born digital organisations, including driving new approaches to consumer interaction, communication, and marketing. However, we know little about how born digital organise internally to manage and respond to consumer demands. In this paper, we studied an organisation providing online travel services where its aim was to reorganise internally, in relation to consumers, through developing a set of ‘search’ practices. The role of search is particularly salient for born digitals, giving rise to new roles and expertise where or­ ganisations attempt to pre-empt user actions. Through qualitative research, we show how a born digital organisation creates new practices that we label pre-emptive, reactive, reflective and adaptive. Our main finding is that rapidly and constantly reconfiguring practices, what these new experts call ‘constructive disruption’, is essential for born digitals to manage relationships with consumers. Our paper contributes by providing a better understanding of practices within born digital organisations, and specifically the practices born digitals use to navigate unpredictable emerging changes and produce constant novelty for customers. We also contribute to the concept of search and provide examples of how it might be employed to better understand digital organising and digital transformation. Collapse
