Abstract: Online reviews have become a popular tool for understanding consumers' perceptions of service and product quality. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the restaurant industry, including negative impacts on profitability. This study utilizes gratitude theory and expectation confirmation theory to investigate how food delivery and food desert status moderated the impact of the pandemic on consumers' perceptions of restaurant quality. We find that consumers still held expectations for restaurants despite the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and their lack of food availability. Our findings also highlight the importance of food accessibility and availability, particularly in underprivileged communities during a crisis. This study has broader implications for businesses operating during crisis events providing insights into how they can improve their service and product quality to meet the needs of their consumers. Abstract: This paper examines how heterogeneous technologies impact the coordination of knowledge work in complex socio-technical settings. It is based on an in-depth field study of critical care practices characterized by intensive knowledge work and technological heterogeneity. We observe that heterogeneous technologies create workflow gaps within which health professionals adapt technology use to contingencies and local needs, prioritize interventions, and identify problems before they become detrimental to patient care. These adaptations provide opportu­ nities for health professionals to continuously align work across heterogeneous technologies and to accomplish broader professional and ideological goals. Our analysis shows that health pro­ fessionals use three coordination practices when working across heterogeneous technologies: controlling and enhancing information, reconstructing workflows, and circumventing re­ quirements. We theorize how these practices address coordination needs associated with het­ erogeneous technologies and discuss implications for knowledge work. We provide a more complete understanding of coordination practices in complex, socio-technical settings which contributes to both knowledge work and coordination literatures. Collapse

Abstract: During a social crisis, the truthfulness of information becomes very important, particularly in determining if the information will spark extreme social engagement. We test a research model to examine major determinants of message spread during the 2016 Charlotte, North Carolina protests which occurred after false online rumors spread related to the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. We hypothesize relationships between message spread (retweets) and extremity, negative emotions (sadness and fear), and social ties (reciprocal reply and location proximity), and Twitter experience. Using Poisson regression, we evaluate and compare two separate models (rumor and truth). Results of the analysis indicate that rumors and truths spread differently. More extreme messages spread less if they are truths, and fear does not relate to the spread of rumors. The results of the study provide theoretical and practical insights into the current research in the areas of information diffusion and social engagement. Collapse

Abstract: As per the U.S Energy Information Administration’s latest inventory of electricity generators, renewable energy, most notably solar and wind, will account for roughly 70% of nearly 40 gigawatts of new electricity generating capacity to start commercial operation in 2021. The year 2021 will also set a record in the deployment of utility-scale solar capacity by adding 15.4 gigawatts of capacity to the grid, which surpasses the 12 gigawatts increase in 2020. The rapid increase of renewable energy is expected to significantly decrease emissions of greenhouse gases and change the load profile in the power grid by suppressing production from conventional generators. This paper aims to propose a framework to study the impact of utility-scale solar PV deployment on the generation resource allocation and investigate the economics and policy of electricity generation and carbon emissions. Abstract: Rapid improvements in underlying technologies coupled with the diminution of contact-based interactions are resulting in commensurate increases in the supply of and demand for innovative electronic services over self-service technologies (SSTs). This situation raises critical questions regarding value creation as prior research suggests mixed effects of SSTs on customers and unclear implications of SSTs for firm customer growth. These implications are accentuated when firms offer innovative electronic services because of customers’ unfamiliarity with the services. In turn, this dynamic raises vital questions about (a) how SSTs influence firm customer growth, particularly when the firm’s electronic services are more innovative, and (b) what complementary investments help firms achieve customer growth from SSTs and innovative electronic services. In this study, we conceptualize the theoretical mechanisms underlying these relationships and empirically examine seven-year longitudinal secondary data of over 3,800 credit unions in the United States to obtain three main findings. First, consistent with prior views of SSTs, we find no significant unconditional effect of SSTs on firm customer growth. Second, we find that the innovativeness of the firm’s electronic services (IES) negatively moderates the influence of SSTs on firm customer growth, suggesting that SSTs may positively influence growth when IES is low but may deter growth when IES is high. Third, marketing intensity and human capital intensity positively moderate the influence of IES on the effect of SSTs on customer growth. In supplementary analysis, we find similar results using cross-sectional primary data from a sample of 186 U.S. credit unions and their customers matched with secondary data. Our unique theoretical contribution lies in highlighting that innovative electronic services on SSTs aimed at bringing the enterprise to the customer may not be enough for firms to achieve customer growth unless those services are accompanied by complementary investments in marketing and human capital. Abstract: The transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions, which concerns governments and communities worldwide. Electric vehicles (EVs) are believed to be the future. Various incentives have been provided to further broaden their acceptance and accelerate their adoption, including toll-exemption programs for EVs. At the same time, an individual's driving behaviors are largely shaped by navigation applications that provide real-time traffic conditions. In this paper, we aim to understand how information provision affects the optimal structure of the EV-exempt toll. By analyzing a Bayesian routing game, we illustrate the optimality of a nonmonotonic tolling strategy as a function of the EV adoption rate. For policymakers, our finding reveals the importance of understanding how the IT-enabled information provision has altered individual drivers' behavior. In addition, the results uncover the general impact of IT, which expands the action space of individuals and the effective regimes of policies. Collapse

Abstract: Urbanization and the growth of human population are leading to increased complexities in the interactions of citizens with public spaces, creating cities that must be more responsive to community dynamics. Despite the critical need for community-based city management, current decision-making approaches are often uninformed by the collective behavior of communities across time and in different locations. Here, we introduce a computer vision-based monitoring and forecasting approach for Smart City Digital Twins (SCDT) that enables integrating collective behavior into the spatiotemporal assessments of exposure to urban heat stress. Our results from a pilot case study in the city of Columbus, GA, demonstrate the significance of integrating community dynamics into monitoring and forecasting urban hazard exposure. This ongoing study highlights how SCDT can make community dynamics more accessible to and responsive by city managers. Collapse

Abstract: Powered by digital technologies, many peer-to-peer platforms, or what is called the sharing economy, have emerged in the past decade. Although the impact of the sharing economy has received considerable attention over the past few years, extant research has not fully documented the impact of the sharing economy on consumers, workers, industry, or society as a whole. In this study, we exploit the geographical and temporal variation in Uber's entry to examine its impact on the personal bankruptcy rate as well as on other consumer credit default rates. We empirically document the changes in personal bankruptcy filings after Uber's entry, and show that personal bankruptcy filings under Chapter 7 experience a drop of 0.047 per 1,000 people after Uber enters a county, which translates to a 3.26% reduction in quarterly bankruptcy filings. Uber's entry also leads to a reduction in Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filings, but to a smaller degree (0.018 cases per 1,000 people per quarter). We check the validity of our estimates using business bankruptcy filings, which we find are uncorrelated with Uber's entry. Collapse

Abstract: Though environmentally friendly in many regards, local supply chains are often inefficient due to lack of proper infrastructure. This paper explores the use and placement of mobile hubs for consolidation and distribution of goods in local supply chains. Specifically, we look at local food supply chains where food typically travels from rural farms to suburban and urban restaurants. Currently, consolidation is minimal and not optimized in these supply chains. This paper computes suitability and location analysis through a novel multi-criterion scoring methodology utilizing kernel density and network analysis. The effectiveness of these mobile hubs is assessed through strategic routing, where the routes are optimized for time and distance. Results indicate that on average mobile hubs do in fact reduce mileage and number of stops, lessening emissions in addition to saving time and money. The proposed methodology can be implemented in other local supply chains to better consolidate and distribute goods. Collapse

Abstract: Recent privacy-related incidents of mobile services have shown that app stores and providers face the challenge of mobile users’ information privacy concerns, which can prevent users from installing mobile apps or induce them to uninstall an app. In this paper, we investigate the role of app permission requests and compare the impact on privacy concerns with other antecedents of information privacy concerns, i.e., prior privacy experience, computer anxiety, and perceived control. To test these effects empirically, we conducted an online survey with 775 participants. Results of our structural equation modeling show that prior privacy experience, computer anxiety, and perceived control have significant effects on privacy concerns. However, concerns for app permission requests have approximately twice as much predictive value than the other factors put together to explain mobile users’ overall information privacy concerns. We expect that our findings can provide a theoretical contribution for future mobile privacy research as well as practical implications for app stores and providers. Collapse
