Abstract: This empirical paper examines to what extent distinct IT skills (e.g., Microsoft Excel skills) as well as digital competencies (e.g., digital communication) are vital to cope successfully with digitalization demands. Based on the job demands-resources model we hypothesize that digital competencies as well as IT skills lead to lower levels of employees' perceived digitalization overstrain. However, results of regression analysis in our study (n = 171 participants) reveal that broad digital competencies like Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication are more important for coping with the demands of digitalization than specific IT skills. Furthermore, we applied cluster analyses in order to identify four distinct digital competence profiles which we labelled as the Digitally Cautious, the Digital Novices, the Creative Problem-Solvers and the Communicative Collaborators. Companies may explicitly strengthen their employees' digital competencies prior to their software knowledge to cope with general digitalization challenges like higher degrees of ambiguity, uncertainty or dynamic change. Abstract: Big Data analytics has recently fostered significant research on the influence of news sentiment in finance. This paper thus examines the effect of news sentiment on crude oil prices for different investor types according to the noise trader approach. The noise trader approach assumes the presence of informed and uninformed investors. Informed investors possess a perfect information horizon, whereas uninformed investors trade upon noise signals, such as sentiment. Methodologically, we decompose the crude oil price with a Kalman filter into a Kalman-smoothed, fundamental price component and a noise residual. We then regress news sentiment on both decomposed oil price components. Our findings suggest that news sentiment not only has a significant positive effect on the noise residual (as suggested by the noise trader approach), but also on the fundamental price. Thus, we find empirical evidence contradicting the noise trader model, which assumes that only uninformed investors trade on sentiment. Collapse

Abstract: According to many models, social preferences are influenced by properties of payoff distributions like the payoff to the group member who is worst off, or higher payoffs to other members possibly causing envy. In this paper, we explore if subjects in a social preference experiment consciously take these elements into account. To study this question, we performed an experiment in which subjects stated indifference values of unequal payoff distributions, and explicitly reported on the strategies they used in stating these values. This approach allows us to obtain a cardinal measure of their social preferences, and to study the impact both of subject characteristics and stated strategies on these values. Our results indicate that although experimental factors, like group composition or field of study of subjects, are significantly related to self-reported strategies, they barely have a statistically significant impact on the indifference values given. On the other hand, we find highly significant relationships between self-reported strategies and actual behavior. Furthermore, our results indicate that the salience of different payoff distribution characteristics, and the impact of different motives on actual decisions, is context dependent. Collapse

Abstract: Global distribution systems (GDSs) and online travel agencies (OTAs) have been providing critical intermediation services for the air travel services industry. Their systems services have eroded the airlines' revenue by encouraging consumers to do price comparison-based purchases though, which has caused the commoditization of air travel services. The airlines have begun to adopt à la carte pricing mechanisms in their direct distribution channel, especially through their Web sites. This way, they can provide travelers with an array of information for different airline product bundles and the flexibility to customize different bundles. This mechanism design may allow airlines to decommoditize their services in the minds of consumers. We analyze two years of data from a large international airline that sold airline tickets via several different direct and indirect distribution channels. Our results suggest that demand in the à la carte channel as a whole is less price-elastic. The results for price elasticity for different market segments and bundle types across channels were not altogether consistent with our predictions though. We find that, for some branded bundles of services, price elasticity is lower in the à la carte channel, and for others it is higher. We discuss the implications for managers and the design of à la carte selling mechanisms. Collapse

Abstract: The importance of IT has been increasing in both developing and developed countries over the past three decades. However, almost all findings on IT productivity have been based on data collected in developed countries, while research on productivity in developing countries has been sparse. We studied the effect of IT investment on firm-level productivity in the Chinese electronics industry using a production function model. We found that the direction and size of the impact of IT investment on productivity in China were generally similar to results of studies for the United States and concluded that Chinese firms should invest more in IT. Finally, contrary to popular belief, labor is still an important factor in the production function of the Chinese electronics industry, despite its status as a high-technology industry. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the interactive effect of technological intensiveness and top management group (TMG) pay disparity on firm performance. Drawing on two literatures--task interdependence and group rewards--we argue that: (a) technological intensiveness imposes a considerable requirement for multiway information processing and collaboration among senior executives of a firm, and (b) collaboration is diminished when large pay disparities exist. Hence, TMG pay disparity should be more detrimental to subsequent performance of high-technology firms than low-technology firms. We construct seven different measures of executive pay disparity based on three major types of pay disparity (vertical, horizontal, and overall) and use a proprietary data set to test our hypotheses. The results provide consistent support for our hypotheses, thereby suggesting important implications for scholars and designers of executive compensation. Collapse

Abstract: It is difficult for the firm competing through information technology resources to gain a sustainable advantage because systems are easy to imitate and substitute resources are often available to competitors. The innovator may be unable to appropriate all of the benefits from information technology investments. Airlines have installed computerized reservations systems in travel agencies to appropriate the returns from their investments in information technology. The airlines expected to obtain a number of benefits from this strategy, including increased efficiency, possible bias in favor of the computerized reservations systems owner on the part of the travel agent, and fees from other airlines for making reservations for them. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the appropriation of value by computerized reservations systems owners from deploying systems in travel agencies. These benefits, beyond fees from travel agents, should be seen in the vendor airline's market share between cities and in the overall performance of the airline at an industry level. This paper models airline performance as a function of computerized reservations systems ownership at two levels: for selected city-pairs and at the overall level of the firm. The city-pair analysis employs a multinomial logit market share model that analyzes five years of data on 72 city-pair routes. The industry model uses longitudinal data for a panel of 10 airlines for 12 years. The results of both analyses support hypotheses that computerized reservations systems ownership is positively related to airline performance. It appears that strong airlines have appropriated the benefits of their computerized reservations systems, turning them into highly specialized assets for further travel-related innovation. This work offers useful theoretical extensions and methodological approaches for the study of similar kinds of network technology innovations that are currently being deployed in association with electronic commerce on the Internet.
