Abstract: With the ever-growing popularity of online shopping, platform environments providing access to products by multiple sellers increasingly attract users. To reduce information asymmetry and enhance user trust, platform actors provide signals such as star reviews to demonstrate their trustworthiness. This work investigates the influence of trust signals from different sources (on the platform itself vs. on external third-party review sites) and for different targets (platform provider vs. seller) on users' trust formation in multi-sided e-commerce platforms. We conduct a choice-based conjoint analysis based on data from 81 participants. Our results show that users weigh external signals stronger than internal ones when building trust. Also, trust signals for sellers have a higher impact on users' trust than platform provider signals. Signal discrepancies between internal and external reviews are especially harmful to the platform provider. These insights extend prior knowledge on trust formation and its impacting factors on e-commerce platforms. Collapse

Abstract: eHealth research has been marked by the last two decades of scholarship spurred by technological advances and the potential of health promotion and behavior change.The study examined the state of eHealth scholarship across social, behavioral and information technologies through a systematic, machine-based learning approach of the last 19 years across 811 articles. The study analyzes topics that were published using latent Dirichlet allocation of studies from 2002 to 2021; it also raises ethical challenges for researchers related to those in prior health initiatives by the CDC and in current scholarship. Results show the common topics, terms, and linguistic attributes within the state of eHealth scholarship and disparities in other areas based on topics published. Suggestions are offered for interdisciplinary collaboration to facilitate the growth and the optimal, practical use of eHealth and directions for the future. Collapse

Abstract: The mobile games business is an ever-increasing sub-sector of the entertainment industry. Due to its high profitability but also high risk and competitive atmosphere, game publishers need to develop strategies that allow them to release new products at a high rate, but without compromising the already short lifespan of the firms' existing games. Successful game publishers must enlarge their user base by continually releasing new and entertaining games, while simultaneously motivating the current user base of existing games to remain active for more extended periods. Since the core-component reuse strategy has proven successful in other software products, this study investigates the advantages and drawbacks of this strategy in mobile games. Drawing on the widely accepted Product Life Cycle concept, the study investigates whether the introduction of a new mobile game built with core-components of an existing mobile game curtails the incumbent's product life cycle. Based on real and granular data on the gaming activity of a popular mobile game, the authors find that by promoting multi-homing (i.e., by smartly interlinking the incumbent and new product with each other so that users start consuming both games in parallel), the core-component reuse strategy can prolong the lifespan of the incumbent game. Abstract: Whilst the role of online communities (OCs) in knowledge exchange and generation has been widely discussed, limited research exists on the distance and direction of OC knowledge flows. In this paper, we examine this issue by taking the case of an industry-founded OC that rendered around the use of a specific Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) module used by public sector organisations. Through a grounded analysis approach, we extend literature on OCs by identifying user-generated practices that enable knowledge flows in the online space as well as by examining the travels of these knowledge flows, taking particular account of the distance they cover and the direction they take. Findings point to within, outwards and inwards travels of OC-related knowledge flows showing a widely spread OC knowledge impact. The theoretical and practical implications of the study are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Online reputation represents an important driver for platform-mediated transactions. Reputation portability captures the notion of allowing users to transfer their reputationoften in the form of numerical rating scoresfrom one platform to another. The effectiveness of reputation as a driver of trustworthiness within platforms is well-understood. However, the benefits of porting reputation across platform boundaries are unclear as there is still little empirical evidence. In this article, we employ a multi-method approach to evaluate the interplay of on-site and imported reputation. First, we report results from an online experiment, showing that imported ratings represent a powerful source of online trust. Moreover, we provide a rationale for complementors deciding on whether or not to import reputation. Second, based on empirical data from an actual e-commerce platform, we investigate complementors' ability to attract demand through importing ratings. Last, we sketch out a field experiment to evaluate external validity and effectiveness of reputation portability in the wild.The objective of Study 2 is to complement our reasoning with actual market data and further investigate the interplay of on-site and imported reputation. For that purpose, we collected data from Bonanza.com, an e-commerce platform which positions itself as an alternative to eBay (Hesse and Teubner 2020). On the supply side, it targets business sellers (Bonanza 2019). Importantly, the platform allows sellers (i.e., complementors) to import ratings from eBay. The import is done via a login into the seller's eBay account (single sign-on) and takes about 2 minutes. After import completion, the seller's feedback section displays an overall rating score (1-5 stars in steps of .1) as well as a differentiated breakdown as to how many ratings for each specific star score stem from Bonanza and from eBay, respectively. MethodSample. We collected openly accessible data for a total of 13,135 individual sellers on Bonanza across all product categories (no login required). Data was retrieved at two instances in April/May 2019 (t1 and t2). In line with the cases outlined above, each Bonanza seller has either (1) no on-site and no imported rating (14.5%), (2) only an on-site rating (7.8%), (3) only an imported rating (25.5%), or (4) both types of ratings (52.2%). For each seller, we consider the ratings' scores (between 1.0 and 5.0 stars) as well the respective numbers of underlying ratings. Measures. The longitudinal data structure allows us to account for sellers' capability of generating additional sales (i.e., delta between data extraction points t1 and t2) as a result of their rating score in t1. We consider this demand delta while simultaneously controlling for the seller's shop size (total number of items), tenure (number of reviews), as well as mean and median prices. Specifically, in contrast to "snapshot" data from only one single point of time, this approach reduces endogeneity issues which make inferences on causal effects notoriously difficult. Collapse

Abstract: Reputation has become a key factor within today’s online platform landscape. In particular for sellers in electronic commerce, the management of reputation as a signal of trustworthiness has become a relevant business activity. Prior studies have focused on either the role of reputation within given (but platformbound) environments or general data portability between platforms. The question of cross-platform reputation portability, however, has thus far achieved much less attention. With this exploratory work, we present survey data on consumers’ perception of portable reputation in the platform economy and a case study based on actual (seller) market data from an e-commerce marketplace. Our results show that consumers are generally receptive for imported seller reputation. However, for seller ratings to function as an effective signaling device across platform boundaries, adequate means of representation have yet to be found. Collapse

Abstract: With the ever-growing popularity of sharing economy platforms, complementors increasingly face the challenge to manage their reputation on different platforms. The paper reports the results from an experimental online survey to investigate how and under which conditions online reputation is effective to engender trust across platform boundaries. It shows that (1) cross-platform signaling is in fact a viable strategy to engender trust and that (2) its effectiveness crucially depends on source–target fit. Implications for three stakeholders are discussed. First, platform complementors may benefit from importing reputation, especially when they have just started on a new platform and have not earned on-site reputation yet. The results also show, however, that importing reputation (even if it is excellent) may be detrimental if there occurs a mismatch between source and target and that, hence, fit is of utmost importance. Second, regulatory authorities may consider reputation portability as a means to make platform boundaries more permeable and hence to tackle lock-in effects. Third, platform operators may employ cross-platform signaling as a competitive lever. Collapse

Abstract: Although there has been a growing understanding of theory in the information systems field in recent years, the process of theorizing is rarely addressed with contributions originating from other disciplines and little effort to coherently synthesize them. Moreover, the field’s view of theorizing has traditionally focused on the context of justification with an emphasis on collection and analysis of data in response to a research question with theory often added as an afterthought. To fill this void, we foreground the context of discovery that emphasizes the creative and often serendipitous articulation of theory by emphasizing this important stage of theorizing as a reflective and highly iterative practice. Specifically, we suggest that information systems researchers engage in foundational theorizing practices to form the discourse, problematize the phenomenon of interest and leverage paradigms and deploy generative theorizing practices through analogies, metaphors, myths and models to develop the information systems discourse. To illustrate the detailed workings of these discursive practices, we draw on key examples from information systems theorizing. Collapse

Abstract: Despite a growing body of research about the design and use of Smart Personal Assistants, such as Google’s Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa, existing work has mainly focused on their use as task support for individual users in rather simple problem scenarios. Little is known about their ability to improve collaboration among multiple users in more complex problem settings. Using a mixed-method approach, we investigate the value of Smart Personal Assistants as facilitators by directly comparing 40 groups of three who either interact with a Smart Personal Assistant or a scripted human facilitator in a complex problem-solving scenario. The results indicate that groups interacting with Smart Personal Assistant facilitators show significantly better task outcomes and higher degrees of collaboration quality. A conversation analysis approach further analyzes differences in human SPA communication. Our work contributes to computer-supported cooperative work research and emphasizes the value of conversation analysis approaches in HCI research. Collapse

Abstract: Changes in the technological and societal environments that surround organisations have disrupted the classic governance frameworks that corporate and information technology (IT) managers have designed to align IT uses with organisational missions, strategy, and values. The formerly “sovereign territory” of IT departments has been invaded, jeopardised by the autonomy of individual users and the changing nature of IT. Thus questions of IT governance in the age of IT consumerisation are highly critical. In response, this theoretical article introduces an alternative approach, relying on the philosophy of Michel Foucault and his concept of governmentality. The proposed liberal model of IT governance provides a sound foundation to address the challenges associated with modern technological and societal environments in which today’s organisations must evolve. The inferences and analytic implications related to this new liberal model of IT governance lead to the development of a set of governance principles and propositions to guide practice and further research.
