Abstract: The use of mobile enterprise applications (MEAs) is becoming part of the computing landscape in organizations. To build a strong business case for a MEA project, justifying the financial investment, it is necessary to include realistic benefits to be derived from the use of MEAs. Also, it is equally important to include the possible risks to the benefits being realized so that mitigating actions can be put in place. Then the benefits need to be managed. Yet the benefits from MEAs are not clearly understood. Hence the purpose of this study was to describe the benefits from using MEAs and the impediments to the benefits realization. This was done by analysing qualitative data collected from stakeholders in 3 MEA projects in a single organization in the insurance industry. The practical contribution of the study includes a list of tangible and intangible benefits that can be used to build business cases for MEA projects. Also, the risks that organisations need to manage to realize the expected benefits are described. The academic contribution of this study is the addition to the body of knowledge regarding business cases for and benefits from MEAs. Collapse

Abstract: As organizations increasingly use digital platforms to facilitate innovation, researchers are seeking to understand how platforms shape business practices. Although extant literature offers important insights into platform management from a platform-owner perspective, we know little about how organizations manage industry platforms provided by external parties to generate opportunities and overcome challenges in relation to their infrastructure and work processes. As part of larger ecosystems, these digital platforms offer organizations bundles of digital options that they can selectively invest in over time. At the same time, organizations’ previous investments in digital infrastructure and work processes produce a legacy of digital debt that conditions how they manage their digital platforms over time. Against this backdrop, we investigate how digital options and digital debt were implicated in a large Scandinavian media organization’s management of a news production platform over nearly 17 years. Drawing on extant literature and the findings from this case, we theorize the progression of and interactions between digital options and digital debt during an organization’s digital platform management in relation to its infrastructure and work processes. The theory reveals the complex choices that organizations face in such efforts: While they may have to resolve digital debt to make a platform’s digital options actionable, hesitancy to plant digital debt may equally well prevent them from realizing otherwise attractive digital options. Similarly, while identified digital options may offer organizations new opportunities to resolve digital debt, eagerness to realize digital options may just as easily lead to unwise planting of digital debt. Abstract: Qualitative research has experienced broad acceptance in the IS discipline. Despite the merits for exploring new phenomena, qualitative methods are criticized for their subjectivity when it comes to interpretation. Therefore, research mostly emphasized the development of criteria and guidelines for good practice. I present an approach to counteract the issue of credibility and traceability in qualitative data analysis and expand the repertoire of approaches used in IS research. I draw on an existing approach from the information science discipline and adapt it to analyze coded qualitative data. The developed approach is designed to answer questions about the specific relevance of codes and aims to support the researcher in detecting hidden information in the coded material. For this reason, the paper contributes to the IS methodology with bringing new insights to current methods by enhancing them with an approach from another discipline. Collapse

Abstract: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems are becoming increasingly common in applications that are shared between the public and private sectors. These systems facilitate supply chain, traceability and sensor functions, not to mention the application of RFID technology in enabling the Internet of Things. Despite their increasing ubiquity, the management of public-private RFID systems is underresearched and little understood. This research addresses a gap in literature by using Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to uncover the public-private RFID network. It was found that the public-private sector relationship is initially characterised by stereotypical views which diminish as sectors work together. Further, the public sector in this context was seen to be a multiplicity with four different performances, public sector as a member of the public-private partnership; as legislator; as enforcer and as funding provider. This multiplicity is shown to lead to confusion within public-private partnerships as members of the partnership are not always clear about which performance of the public sector they are enacting, or interacting with. ANT provided a sound basis to explore such a complex networked system, its inclusion of technology within the construction of the social offers a way of understanding complexity within internet of things based applications. Abstract: A large information systems implementation (such as Enterprise Resource Planning systems) relies on the trust of its stakeholders to succeed. Such projects impact diverse groups of stakeholders, each with their legitimate interests and expectations. Levels of stakeholder trust can be expected to vary in large-scale implementations (which can take several years), and cannot be taken for granted. Previous studies have largely focused on the taxonomic deconstruction of the trust construct, through point-in-time variance studies. They have identified the relationship between trust and project outcomes, but largely ignored the dynamics of trust relations. Giddens, as part of his study of modernity, theorises trust dynamics in relation to abstract social systems, though without focusing on information systems. We use Giddens’ concepts to investigate evolving trust relationships in a longitudinal case analysis of a large Integrated Hospital System implementation for the Faroe Islands. Trust relationships suffered a serious breakdown, but the project was able to recover and meet its goals. We develop six theoretical propositions theorising the relationship between trust and project outcomes, the maintenance, breakdown and restoration of trust, the role of the information system in restoring trust, and the emergent and reciprocal nature of trust and project outcomes. Abstract: The majority of studies into Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based systems focus on the technical and engineering aspects of such systems. Where research expands outside this scope, it tends to focus on single supply chains set either within the private sector, or less commonly the public sector. This research examines RFID based systems, asking the question “what factors or issues mediate the relationship between public and private sector where they are involved in an RFID system?” From an Actor Network Theory (ANT) perspective, in depth interviews were conducted with 38 senior managers in four countries in order to understand the cross-sector implementations in which they were involved. Eleven mediators were found, across three dimensions. Overarching systems mediators were financial, infrastructure, standards, organisational knowledge and security. Inter-organisational mediators were trust, privacy and legislation. Intra-organisational mediators were leadership, data management and benefits. Some differences were also seen in the way the two sectors acted. This research contributes to theory by proposing a model demonstrating the mediators involved in cross-sector implementations. The novel use of ANT also suggests a research approach that may be successful in further understanding complex technology systems. Collapse

Abstract: Handheld computing and mobile information systems are continuously breaking new ground, with an increased importance for business. However, there is evidence that we still have lessons to learn concerning the design of handheld information systems. Handheld information system poses challenges to the designer in the unique properties of handheld technologies and the conditions of use of handheld technologies. Hence, this paper is based on the assumption that handheld information systems has unique properties, and dependencies between properties, that should to be considered in the design of such a system in order to design appropriate information systems for the mobile workforce. The purpose in this paper is to further enhance the usefulness of the Accentuated Factor Framework by describing dependencies between factors in the framework and by this enhance the efficacy in the design process. The theoretical foundation for the paper is the Accentuated Factor Framework, illustrating the unique properties of handheld information systems whereas the expected use settings are the mobile workforce. The empirical data collection was performed via interviews with experienced practitioners, case studies, workshops and studies of software. The Accentuated Factor Framework enhanced with explanatory dependencies between factors provides the opportunity to enhance the design process by reducing the risk of reengineering in design. Abstract: Virtual worlds offer great potential for supporting the collaborative work of geographically distributed teams. However, reports indicate the existence of substantial barriers to the acceptance and use of virtual worlds in business settings. In this paper, we explore how individuals' interpretations of virtual worlds influence their judgments of the value of the technology. We conducted a qualitative analysis set in the context of a large computer and software company that was in the process of adopting virtual worlds for distributed collaboration. We identified interpretations of virtual worlds that suggest three mental categories: virtual worlds as a medium, virtual worlds as a place, and virtual worlds as an extension of reality. We associated these mental categories with different criteria for assessing the value of virtual worlds in a business setting. This study contributes particularly to the acceptance of virtual worlds but also more generally to the understanding of technology acceptance by demonstrating that the relative importance of the criteria for assessing a technology varies with potential users' interpretations and mental categorizations. Abstract: Radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled devices are becoming increasingly common, facilitating many things from supply chain efficiencies to equipment tracking. Although there is a growing body of research on RFID systems, few studies address implementations that involve both public and private sectors. This paper outlines the results of a qualitative study that identified ten key cross-sector issues arising from four RFID implementations involving both public and private sectors being: cost, standards, infrastructure, trust, data management, privacy, security, information sharing/collaboration, legislation and organizational knowledge. The need for organizational knowledge in the capability of RFID systems has not been previously identified. Although all issues were common across both sectors, the public sector was more sensitive to privacy issues. It is anticipated that this research will assist academics and practitioners identify areas that need to be considered when implementing RFID systems across the public and private sectors. Collapse
