Abstract: The characteristics of suppliers in multi-tier supply chains have drawn more attention recently in the postpandemic age. Due to the increasing reliance on suppliers, information-communication technology (ICT) buying firms expect to map out their upstream suppliers to identify the characteristics of those suppliers, which might affect their performance. In this paper, we utilize horizontal, vertical, and spatial complexities to examine how complex characteristics of the first-and second-tier suppliers affect the ICT buying firms' financial performance. Our empirical test shows that ICT buying firms' sales growth is affected by multitier suppliers from different industries. Our results bring insights into the role of multi-tier suppliers and their effects on ICT buying firms' financial performance. The research findings contribute to the literature on the complexity of multi-tier supply chains. We also provide practical implications for managers from ICT firms to improve their decision-making and collaboration with multi-tier suppliers. Collapse

Abstract: The network information security regulation of information and communication technology (ICT) product supply chain is an important issue for governments globally. The whole life cycle of ICT supply chain is a complex process, comprising the design and development stage, outsourcing integration stage and service operation and maintenance stage. Each of these stages may be maliciously attacked, leading to network information security crisis. Therefore, a tripartite evolutionary game model comprising ICT product suppliers, demand customers (such as system integrators, operation and maintenance suppliers and service providers) and government regulatory authorities was constructed from the perspective of security threats and government regulation in the supply chain of ICT products based on bound rationality. The effects of each element on the tripartite strategy selection were evaluated by determining the evolutionary stability of upstream and downstream supply chains. The evolution path was simulated using Matlab2016a software and external variables were included for simulation analysis. The results showed that: (1) the costs of design development and production of high-quality ICT products directly affect the strategy choice of the producers, and determine the stable strategy time of the demanding customers, implying that excessive R&D costs negatively affect healthy development of the supply chain; (2) increase in incentives by the government within a reasonable range promotes the development of products with high security performance and ensures standardization of the implementation standards of information security acceptance of products by customers. However, the increase in incentives leads to a decrease in government supervision; (3) the initial probability of selection of product manufacturers plays an important role in the convergence rate of demand customers. The participating enterprises and government’s operational decision were explored using the tripartite evolutionary game of the ICT product supply chain to formulate recommendations to enhance the construction of information security. Abstract: Products are often co-developed in networks that embed multiple organizations. Paradoxically, such product development networks can tie rival and competing firms that cooperate with each other in an open-source way. The management of such modus operandi, where firms give up some intellectual property rights granted by law and work with competitors in an open-source way, can be very challenging as it can lead to commoditization, free-riding, and unintended spillover effects. Building upon extant knowledge in coopetition, open-source software, product development, and innovation, we conducted an exploratory case study aimed at understanding open-coopetition (i.e., cooperation among competitors in an open-source way) in the automotive industry. To do so, we leveraged publicly available naturally occurring digital data and qualitative interviews pertaining to four coopetitive open-source projects. Out preliminary results highlight the increasing complexity of the software that powers modern cars and consequent convergence of the automotive industry with the software industry. Collapse

Abstract: Standardization is gaining importance for digital platform eco-systems as they try to balance both stability and flexibility of their core as well as their boundary resources. Our knowledge on which factors influence standardization processes in business-to-business (B2B) focused digital platform eco-systems remains limited. Using three B2B platform eco-systems from the cargo transportation and seaport eco-system context, we apply a multiple case study to investigate which factors affect the standardization mode and the standard adoption. Based on 19 interviews and a systematic coding procedure, we identified 24 factors and cluster them into four overarching themes. We show the relatedness between standardization and innovation research, identify standard characteristics as the most important theme of factors and show that standardization has to be seen as a dynamic and interconnected process, as some factors are interdependent but the controllability varies between factors. Lastly, implications of these results and future research directions are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Being a significant stakeholder in the graduates' employment outcomes, it is vital to understand employers' perceptions of graduates' work-readiness. However, existing information systems (IS) literature focuses mainly on the perceptions of students or universities. This paper aims to fill this gap by analysing scoping interviews conducted with graduate recruiters and industry experts in Australia regarding attributes that can improve graduates' employment prospects in the information and communication technology industry.A preliminary investigation based on grounded theory identified three emergent themes from the data: behaviors, skills, and knowledge levels. Based on the findings, this study proposes an IS graduate workreadiness framework that can help universities to develop academic programs aimed at enhancing desirable skills and attitudes among IS graduates' employment. Abstract: This special issue bundles a series of papers on business model tooling. Business model tools are methods, frameworks or templates to facilitate communication and collaboration regarding Business Model analysis, (re-)design, adoption, implementation and exploitation. In this introduction to the special issue, we position business model tooling in the broader literature, going beyond the mere use of tooling to disseminate academic knowledge. We point out the unique contributions on business model tooling that information systems scholars can bring. After giving an overview of business model tools and ontologies, we sketch a brief research agenda comprising seven research directions: (1) design of tooling; (2) interfaces and usability; (3) evaluation and testing; (4) adoption, diffusion and commercialization of tooling; (5) privacy and security of tool users; (6) the use of tooling in business model education; and (7) future tooling enabled by big data and machine learning. Abstract: A growing body of research focuses on the structure of interfirm value co-creation. Despite this emphasis, little is known about the variation in interfirm collaboration across different service industries. Building on prior work in service value networks and business ecosystems, we analyze the structural characteristics of 11 service industries using a data-driven visualization approach. We first examine the alliance network structure of each service industry individually and differentiate the nature of collaboration using an exploration/coopetition lens. Second, we examine service industries integratively, thereby exploring the extent to which service industries are converging and traditional industry boundaries are blurred. Our results reveal significant structural differences in alliance network structures between service industries as well as diverse value co-creation orientations. Our macro analysis reveals an overall core-periphery structure and different service industry coupling levels, with actors in the ICT industry playing a particularly central role across subclusters. We frame our findings in terms of industry robustness, openness, and embeddedness. We conclude the paper with theoretical and practical implications for understanding and managing service ecosystems and suggest future research opportunities. Collapse

Abstract: In recent years, major local and global disruptions have had significant adverse effects on corporate performance, particularly for businesses with long, global supply chains. Managing disruption and its effects has therefore become a key focus for firms. While the process of disruption management has attracted considerable research attention, much of it has been directed at the pre-disruption stage. This study investigates the postdisruption stage, and its management. The unpredictability of disruption magnitude and nature suggests that the post-disruption management process may be as important, if not more so, than pre-determined pre-disruption strategies. An effective post-disruption management process would directly affect actual ability to recover from sudden and serious disruptions. This study analyzes six companies, variously positioned upstream and downstream in the supply chain of the information and communications technology (ICT) industry in Taiwan. Specific factors and strategies relating to the post-disruption management process were collected by conducting in-depth interviews with the managers and executives of the firms. The information was categorized into distinct disruption management process stages: discovery, recovery, and supply chain redesign. The study findings are interesting and at times, new and counter-intuitive, including the surprising positive effects of clustering in disruptions, and the role of back-up supplier and material verification in disruption recovery. The study emerges with an integrated framework that can be utilized to establish an effective post-disruption management process. Abstract: The strategic management of knowledge spillovers to employee ventures may provide firms with knowledge spill-ins or the potential to learn from the ventures that they have spun out. However, the mechanisms underlying knowledge spill-ins and their importance for external learning in uncertain technology environments have not been examined in detail. This article compares corporate venturing (CV) spinouts that are supported by parent firms with independent employee spinouts as well as other strategies for external learning, such as investments and alliances. An analysis of the patenting activities of leading corporations operating in the information and communication technology industry reveals that, ceteris paribus, when firms recombine unfamiliar knowledge components developed by their CV spinouts, their inventions are associated with higher quality than comparable firms’ inventions that recombine knowledge from the firm’s corporate venture capital portfolio ventures, allies, or employee spinouts. This effect is especially pronounced when CV spinout inventors hold parent-specific technological expertise. The results are robust across several econometric specifications that account for selection and intrinsic differences in external learning strategies. Furthermore, the results indicate that CV spinouts benefit their parent firms by reducing uncertainty relative to other strategic formats for external learning in unfamiliar technological areas. The detailed theoretical and practical implications derived from this research reflect perspectives on technology strategy and corporate renewal. Collapse

Abstract: Ethics for artificial intelligence (AI) is a topic of growing practical relevance. Many people seem to believe that AI could render jobs obsolete in the future. Others wonder who is in charge for the actions of AI systems they encounter. Providing and prioritizing ethical guidelines for AI is therefore an important measure for providing safeguards and increasing the acceptance of this technology. The aim of this research is to survey ethical guidelines for the handling of AI in the ICT industry and evaluate them with respect to their relevance. For this goal, first, an overview of AI ethics is derived from the literature, with a focus on classical Western ethical theories. From this, a candidate set of important ethical guidelines is developed. Then, qualitative interviews with experts are conducted for in-depth feedback and ranking of these guidelines. Furthermore, an online survey is performed in order to more representatively weight the ethical guidelines in terms of importance among a broader audience. Combining both studies, a prioritization matrix is created using the weights from the experts and the survey participants in order to synthesize their votes. Based on this, a ranked catalogue of ethical guidelines for AI is created, and novel avenues for research on AI ethics are presented. Collapse
