Abstract: IT-enabled food-delivery platforms increase restaurants' catchment area and reduce search costs for consumers. The former allows restaurants to pool their risks and decrease noise in demand, whereas the latter increases competition and noise in demand. Overall, it is unclear how these competing factors affect restaurants' ability to forecast their demand -a critical factor for profitability. In this paper, we empirically investigate the impact of ITenabled food-delivery platforms on restaurants' demand forecast error. Using detailed transaction-level datasets, we find that a 10 percentage point increase in dependence on food-delivery platforms leads to a 2.83% increase in overall forecast error. We also find that the majority of increase in overall error is due to an increased error in forecasting intra-day demand "pattern", and a smaller portion is due to error in forecasting interday demand "amplitude". Based on our findings, we offer suggestions for restaurants on managing their relationship with IT-enabled food-delivery platforms. Collapse

Abstract: The economic environment of contemporary organizations is becoming increasingly dynamic. Organizational agility fosters sustainable competitive advantage under these turbulent conditions. Prior research demonstrated that strategic IT alignment could enhance organizational agility. Many organizations implemented an enterprise architecture management (EAM) function to achieve benefits such as strategic IT alignment and agility. However, there is little research that explains the pathways between these focal concepts. Hence, we ground our work in the dynamic capabilities view and develop a conceptual model to explain how EAM investments lead to agility mediated by strategic IT alignment. We conducted survey research and collected a sample of 110 respondents. Based on this dataset, we performed a PLS-SEM and cluster analysis to test our model and associated hypotheses. Our results indicate that EAM enhances organizational agility. Strategic IT alignment mediates this effect. Lastly, our results showcase the complementary effect of conducting a PLS-SEM and cluster analysis. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we theorize a new construct ‘board IT competence’, and show that it is systematically related to firm performance. Using a sample of 32,856 firm-years observations over the period of the year 2000 to 2018, our study shows that board IT competence is positively associated with firm performance. Moreover, the findings suggest that firm performance is not only higher, but also more consistent across time. While many firms find it difficult to identify the right sources in developing IT competence at the board level, our study suggests that a board composition that promotes the representation of directors with relevant IT competencies can offer valuable insights to mobilize and reconfigure IT asset to create firm value. Abstract: As more firms adopt big data analytics to better understand their customers and differentiate their offerings from competitors, it becomes increasingly difficult to generate strategic value from isolated and unfocused ad hoc initiatives. To attain ustainable competitive advantage from big data, firms must achieve agility in combining rich data across the organization to deploy analytics that sense and respond to customers in a dynamic environment. A key challenge in achieving this agility lies in the identification, collection, and integration of data across functional silos both within and outside the organization. Because it is infeasible to systematically integrate all available data, managers need guidance in finding which data can provide valuable and actionable insights about customers. Leveraging relationship marketing theory, we develop a framework for identifying and evaluating various sources of big data in order to create a value-justified data infrastructure that enables focused and agile deployment of advanced customer analytics. Such analytics move beyond siloed transactional customer analytics approaches of the past and incorporate a variety of rich, relationship-oriented constructs to provide actionable and valuable insights. We develop a customized kernel-based learning method to take advantage of these rich constructs and instantiate the framework in a novel prototype system that accurately predicts a variety of customer behaviors in a challenging environment, demonstrating the framework's ability to drive significant value. Openness, however, also plays an important role in creating opportunities for superior firm performance that can shape a firm's open-related strategies and decisions. Drawing on a technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework, this study primarily examines the relationships between TOE openness, service co-production, digitalresource readiness, and firm performance. Data were collected from 210 IT companies in Taiwan; IT service managers were selected as the data collection sources. A partial least squares (PLS) was used to address sophisticated data analysis issues. The empirical evidence indicates that the increased openness of both organization and environment can facilitate superior firm performance primarily through improving service co-production. In addition, process reach and richness can enhance the relationship between service co-production and firm performance. The detailed findings offer practical suggestions for IT firms that seek to attain superior firm performance by optimizing limited resources to foster the openness of their corporate culture and invest in collaborative relationships in conjunction with increased service co-production. In addition, IT firms can manage digital process reach and richness to ensure the fulfillment of various needs and strengthen efforts in firm performance through service co-production. Collapse

Abstract: We explored how IT disclosure affects information quality in the market and identified the factors that influence managers’ choices in IT disclosure quality. Adopting a comprehensive view of IT investments disclosure mechanisms, we found that IT disclosure quality was positively associated with information quality. Specifically, our results showed that an increase in quantitative information in IT disclosure could improve the information environment in the market, thereby reducing the perception of information risk among market participants. We also found that managers’ disclosures were less quantitative when the IT investment was more asset-specific in relation to higher agency costs. Collapse

Abstract: A long-standing question for both IT research and management practice has been: how can IT be used in organizations to increase firm performance? IT researchers have provided many candidate capabilities that impact business and financial performance, including enterprise architecture, IT governance, IT metrics, top management engagement, IT-business alignment, and business and IT unit capabilities. Abstract: Individuals use technology to experiment with new ways of carrying out their tasks and in doing so they learn more about their jobs. The current study examines the role of technology enabled job learning as a key component in the complex relationship between information systems use and technology outcomes. Data from 308 end-users were analyzed to evaluate the relationships between system use and technology enabled job learning, and technology enabled job learning and technology outcomes. Technology enabled job learning was conceptualized in terms of how computer applications helped individuals learn and better perform their jobs. System use was conceptualized in terms of decision support, work integration, and customer service. Technology outcomes were conceptualized in terms of management control, task innovation, task productivity, and customer satisfaction. Results suggest that systems use has a significant, positive effect on job learning, and that job learning has a significant, positive effect on technology outcomes. Post hoc analyses were then conducted to examine the potential mediating role of job learning between systems use and technology outcomes. The findings from this research lead to a greater understanding of how patterns of systems use influence organizationally relevant outcomes through technology-enabled job learning. Collapse

Abstract: Businesses have invested enormous sums in information technology (IT). The challenge now is to optimize these investments. We empirically examined the influence of the alignment between IS strategy and business strategy (strategic alignment) on the payoff of IT investment. Many studies have been performed on the value of IT investment and strategic alignment separately, in the past, but here we combined them by investigating the moderating affect of strategic alignment on the relationship between IT investment and firm performance for a group of manufacturing firms. The results indicated that there is a synergistic coupling between strategic alignment and IT investment with firm performance. Firms that have aligned IT and business strategies can invest in additional IT resources with some assurance that they will be leveraged substantially. One of our main contributions was in the examination of four differing perspectives of strategic alignment and their relationship with the payoff of IT investment. Collapse

Abstract: The impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) investment on business performance has been a major research subject for long time. Until the mid 1990s there was little empirical evidence of a positive and statistically significant relation between ICT investment and business performance (ICT Productivity Paradox). Subsequent research, conducted mainly in a few highly developed countries, provided some empirical evidence of a statistically significant positive contribution of ICT investment to some measures of business performance, which increases if ICT investment is complemented by ’co-investments’ that create some complementary ‘intangible assets’, such as new work practices, business processes, organizational structures and skills. In this paper is presented the first study of the impact of information systems (IS) investments on business performance in Greece, based on firm-level data collected through a questionnaire-based survey in cooperation with the Federation of Greek Industries. In this study we also examine whether there is complementarity between IS investment and a set of IS management factors. It is concluded that in Greece IS spending by firms as a percentage of their sales revenue is lower than in the highly developed countries. Also, using econometric models based on the Cobb Douglas production function, we conclude that IS investments in Greece make a positive and statistically significant contribution to firm output and labour productivity, but not to the return on assets. Moreover it was found that the average marginal productivities of ICT capital and ICT labour expenses in Greece are higher than in the highly developed countries; also they are much higher than the average marginal productivities of the non-ICT capital and the non-ICT labour expenses respectively. Finally it was found that there is complementarity between IS investment and the examined set of IS management factors with respect to firm output and labour productivity; therefore the combination of IS investment with these IS management factors results in additional increase of firm output and labour productivity beyond the individual effect of IS investment.
