Abstract: Digital new market creation has several advantages for incumbent firms (hereafter referred to as ‘incumbents’) that they seek to exploit by using formalization and implementing agility in their new product development (NPD). We introduce the construct of NPD decision agility encompassing the dimensions of sensemaking, speed, and iteration. However, research reveals heterogeneous insights into formalization’s suitability for digital new market creation and NPD decision agility. In response to this research gap, we test our hypotheses by applying a behavioral lens to a sample of 129 incumbents. We reconcile these heterogeneous insights on innovation by showing that formalization increases digital new market creation, but has more fine-grained effects on NPD decision agility. Although improving sensemaking and reducing iteration, formalization has no effect on speed. Furthermore, political behavior increases formalization’s negative effect on iteration. We contribute to research digitalization and agility at the intersection of information systems and innovation management by reconciling these heterogeneous insights. Collapse

Abstract: Climate change and the fast-changing natural environment necessitate firms to adapt their way of doing business towards environmental sustainability. As information systems (IS) are seen as a potential lever to facilitate this adaptation successfully, this study focuses on the role of ISrelated human capital of top management team (TMT) members in facilitating green IS innovation activities in firms. Using a panel data set of firms listed in the S&P 500 index, this study finds that IS-related education and experience of TMT members are positively associated with green IS innovation activities. In addition, the results show that the presence of a CIO positively moderates the positive association of IS-related experience with green IS innovation activities. Consequently, this study contributes to the IS literature on the intersection of human capital theory from an upper echelon perspective and environmental sustainability. Collapse

Abstract: The diffusion of AI-technology disrupts labor and industries and gives rise to a diverse range of new ventures and product innovations. Such product innovations involve the negotiation of product boundaries among actors in innovation networks, including ventures, investors, and customers. These negotiations consist of social and cognitive translations. For digital products, actors share a common understanding of resource configuration, mainly based on cognitive resonance. However, AI-driven products introduce the "black-box" problem that hinders cognitive translation-based negotiations within innovation networks, as they are not fully cognitively traceable, but emotionally resonant. Using a qualitative research approach and the notion of entrepreneurial framing, we investigate the impact of AI on the negotiation of product boundaries and digital innovation. We reveal that AI-ventures, to maintain "cognitive" superiority, focus on cutting-edge technology while limiting negotiation to non-technology aspects, such as revenue streams and business models, creating "cognitive moats" for non-expert actors. Abstract: Student research aligns well with recent movements to a learner-centered educational paradigm. However, despite student research's learning benefits, the IS literature has paid limited attention to the topic. We require easy-to-follow student research frameworks and case studies and ways to measure research-teaching integration's benefits. I address this knowledge gap in this essay. I present a research apprenticeship model that serves as an adaptable framework for integrating student research into existing study programs and teaching practices. I evaluate its benefits through personal reflections and students' self-reported learning outcomes. I interpret these benefits by drawing on learning theory and, in particular, the two concepts "legitimate peripheral participation" and "community of practice". I claim that the model helps students become legitimate members of the IS research community of practice. With this essay, I contribute to the literature by identifying situated learning elements that student research requires to succeed and describe model components that support legitimate peripheral participation in the community. Subsequently, I relate these contributions to extant IS literature, discuss their implications for teaching practice, derive recommendations, and highlight potential future research topics. Collapse

Abstract: The field of Information systems (IS) is dynamic and rapidly changing due to technology innovation and emerging technologies. The changing nature of this field poses a significant challenge for educators trying to stay up to date in their preparation of future technology leaders. Despite this challenge, the IS2020 model curriculum, as well as organizational leaders, are calling on IS educators to find ways to develop and deliver student competencies related to innovation and emerging technologies to meet the needs of the IS workforce. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to present a plan for the teaching and learning of these topics within an IS program. This paper outlines a framework for course delivery based on foundational topics that can be utilized for mastering the technology innovation challenge in the classroom and be adapted in response to the changing nature of the discipline. The course plan focuses on theoretical foundations and connects with practice for exploring the application of concepts so students can be introduced to what is really happening in relation to technology in business and the discipline of IS. The course model was tested in-person and online and can be adapted depending on university schedules and teaching modalities. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the importance of information technology (IT) innovation in today’s digitalized world, little research attention has been paid to examining how firms can incentivize IT innovation. To fill this gap, the current study investigates the impact of managerial incentives provided to chief executive officers (CEOs) on IT innovation, measured by the number of IT patents. In particular, we examine the role of risk-taking incentives provided to CEOs, captured by the sensitivity of CEO wealth to stock return volatility (i.e., Vega). Vega can motivate CEOs to engage in risky IT innovation projects by aligning their wealth with firm-specific risk. In so doing, we focus on how CEOs’ IT-related human capital (i.e., IT education and IT experience) moderates the relationship between Vega and IT innovation. Our empirical analyses reveal that a higher Vega encourages CEOs to support more IT innovation; more importantly, the impact of Vega on the amount of IT patents is stronger for firms with CEOs who have higher levels of IT education and IT experience. Our study contributes to research and practice by conceptualizing a CEO’s IT-related human capital and validating its moderating role in the relationship between risk-taking incentives provided to the CEO and the amount of IT innovation. Abstract: Digital platforms are restructuring how many companies and industries function, including humanitarian organisations that operate in complex environments and serve vulnerable populations. To date, however, there has been limited study of their use in humanitarian and particularly refugee contexts. This paper seeks to address this gap by drawing on the concept of platformisation to study the opportunities and challenges arising from UNHCR's transition from a closed transactional system to an open innovation platform focusing on core processes of identification, value creation and platform governance that are relevant for refugee management and protection. Our empirical study captures the perspectives of the UNHCR, organisational stakeholders and refugees in the world's largest refugee camp in Northern Uganda with regards to UNHCR's strategy towards platform openness. We find that UNHCR's data transformation strategy introduces the potential for increasing institutional value in the form of more effective service delivery to refugees. However, these technological opportunities do not necessarily translate to greater value if they do not mesh with current work practices, incentives and activities of service provider organisations and refugees. Our study helps identify opportunities to address these constraints, primarily through improving understanding of the emergent governance-related tensions that exist for digital platforms for development and surfacing existing issues of exclusion and vulnerability. We conclude with insights for the broader theorisation of identification platforms and with recommendations for policies and practices that together might help realise the potential value creation introduced through the platformisation of identification systems. Abstract: All Information Systems (IS) innovations start with an idea. However, only little is known about how individuals evaluate such new IS ideas. As almost all IS rely on network effects, meaning that technology's worth hinges on the number of adopters, we claim that individuals also evaluate new IS ideas based on the value they might have for others. Hence, the paper draws on coping theory and research on social actors to develop the concept of a 'community-focused appraisal.' This concept proposes that individuals in organizations evaluate new IS ideas both towards the consequences for themselves AND other individuals (referred to as community). The conducted vignette study confirms our theoretical considerations of individuals dealing with new IS ideas by applying five different adaptation strategies. We contribute to IS research by extending coping theory with a 'community-focused appraisal' and by explaining how the sense of community affects individuals' adaptation behavior. Collapse

Abstract: This article responds to increasing discourses on digital social innovation (DSI) from the perspectives of women entrepreneurs. Using the individual differences theory of gender and information technology (IDTGIT), this research explores how digital technology is used by women entrepreneurs to create opportunities in response to the challenges associated with individual identity, individual influences, social influences and structural influences. We also extend the IDTGIT by exploring how technology is used by women entrepreneurs in their DSI ventures and how technology facilitates the social impact of such ventures. This paper draws on a qualitative study using interviews with 17 women entrepreneurs in Australia, and our findings indicate that individual identity, individual influences and social and structural influences play a significant role in inhibiting women entrepreneurs' business ventures but technology helps to create opportunities for women entrepreneurs to address these factors. We also found that technology plays a role in helping women entrepreneurs to pursue social innovation in two different ways: through social innovation that is embodied by technology and social innovation that is enabled by technology. Our findings further indicate the social impact of DSI in the areas of education, employment, environment and climate, community development and progress and healthcare. The theoretical and practical implications of DSI for women entrepreneurs are provided. Collapse
