Abstract: From a theoretical perspective data does not constitute a traditional business asset. Existing valuation approaches are either sector specific or still unexplored. In modern businesses the value-adding use and monetization of existing “big data” represents one of the greatest potentials in the context of digital transformation. This paper aims at reviewing methods and developing an integrated methodology for the value determination of data in general and for use in the manufacturing industry in particular. Therefore, the general state of research in data value assessment is investigated by a broad literature analysis. Based on the identified general principles, methodological requirements for data value determination are compiled. A new methodology for data evaluation is developed and applied to four use cases coming from the automotive industry. The results show that the methodology can be used in different contexts and thus enables managers to explore the most promising use cases for data-driven business. Collapse

Abstract: Technology-driven challenges, both existing and emerging, require banks to invest in IT capabilities, especially in artificial intelligence (AI). Digital options theory presents a valuable guide rail for these investments. However, the nature of AI as a moving frontier of computing requires certain extensions to established digital option thinking. Based on interviews with 23 experts in the retail banking industry, we highlight the importance of thinking broadly when laying the foundation for AI options and being mindful of the dynamic effects of contextual factors. Drawing from digital options theory and the Technology-Organization-Environment framework as dual lens, our study adds a structured approach to consciously balance resources and AI-related capability investments with a broader consideration of the banking industry's complex environment. In this way, our study complements recent research on the interplay between incumbents' resources and digital opportunities. Collapse

Abstract: Business continuity (BC) management is an organizational approach to preparing information systems (IS) for incidents, but such approaches are uncommon among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Past research has indicated a gap in approaches that are designed for SMEs since BC management approaches tend to originate from larger organizations and SMEs lack the resources to implement them. To fill this gap, and to respond to a practical need by an IT consultancy company, we employed design science research (DSR) to develop a BC approach for SMEs coined as the thrifty BC management approach. Jointly with the company's practitioners, we developed a set of metarequirements for BC approaches for SMEs anchored in prior BC literature, practitioners' practical expertise, and the theories of collective mindfulness and sociotechnical systems. We evaluated our thrifty BC management approach with multiple SMEs. These evaluations suggest that the designed approach mostly meets the defined meta-requirements. Moreover, the evaluations offered ample opportunities for learning. The design process, unfolding in a real-world setting, was precarious, rife with contingencies and ad hoc decisions. To render the design process transparent, we adapted four writing conventions from the confessional research genre familiar to ethnographic research but novel to DSR. We offer a threefold contribution. First, we contribute to SMEs' BC with meta-requirements and their instantiation in a new BC approach (artifact); second, we contribute with four practices of confessional writing for transparency of DSR research; and third, we contribute with reflections on our theoretical learning from throughout the design process.Marko Niemimaa is an associate professor at the University of Agder and an adjunct professor at the University of Turku. Abstract: Digitalization is increasingly and broadly impacting on companies throughout all industries. To cope with digital transformation, organizations need specific IT skills and often face a bottleneck between required and existing capabilities. Thus, organizations revert to support from IT consultants. However, such collaborations need to create value so as to make client organizations future-proof in the long term. We therefore need a better understanding of how value is created in IT consulting projects. We build on service-dominant (S-D) logic as the theory base and evaluate our structural model, which explains IT consulting service value based on 77 matched pairs of IT consulting projects using structural equation modeling. We provide empirical support for the assumptions of S-D logic in the IT consulting industry and reveal determinants that significantly contribute to the overall IT consulting service value. Our results contribute to the ongoing discourse in the S-D logic literature and provide meaningful insights for practice. Collapse

Abstract: Smart service innovation is the process of reconfiguring resources, structures, and value co-creation processes in service systems that result in novel data-driven service offerings. The nature of such offerings requires the involvement of multiple actors, which has been investigated by a few studies only. In particular, little is known about the multiple actors’ efforts to manage uncertainty in the process of establishing smart service systems. Empirically grounded in data from 25 interviews with industry experts, we explore how organizations act and interact in smart service innovation processes. For our data analysis, we adopt a microfoundational view to derive a theoretical model that conceptualizes actor engagement as a microfoundation for iterative uncertainty reduction in the actor-to-actor network of the smart service system. Our study contributes to information systems research on service systems engineering and digital transformation by explaining smart service innovation from both a multi-actor and a multi-level perspective, drawing on service-dominant (S-D) logic and microfoundations as well-established theoretical lenses. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) and its rapid technological advancement will considerably affect the future of work and the way organizations manage their knowledge management (KM) processes. Typical KM initiatives include the development, transfer, storage, and evaluation of a firm's knowledge throughout the knowledge lifecycle, but often neglect ongoing advances in the AI area. Thus, organizations struggle to integrate AI into working environments to leverage outcome efficiency. Starting with a descriptive literature review, we draw on two KM strategies-personalization and codification-and introduce an adaptive, AI-specific approach for organizational KM implementation. Our approach supports KM strategy and research, as it outlines how AI affects current working processes. This enables to understand which role AI can take in the human-AI interaction. Knowledge managers are provided with a tool to align organizational KM with the business strategy and current technological progress in AI context. Abstract: Digitalization permeates entire companies. Rethinking information systems (IS) success models developed in the 1980/1990s becomes obvious. But how does one define such a new model and implement it? Taking an SAP S/4HANA migration as our use case, the new triple "E" rating on hand focuses on the IS success of digital technologies by balancing efficiency, effectiveness, and experience criteria. Six takeaways emerge from our case study that should drive future discussion: (1) Evaluate digital technologies by adopting a simple but comprehensive approach including criteria beyond efficiency.(2) Consider diverse IS success perspectives consciously but never lose focus on the enduser. (3) A triad of efficiency, effectiveness, and experience encompasses the challenges of digital technologies. (4) Separate efficiency and effectiveness criteria, however, consider trade-offs between them. (5) The experience category highlights digital awareness and socio-technical changes. Abstract: Interfirm relationships are crucial to our understanding of firms’ collective and interactive behavior. Many information systems-related phenomena, including the diffusion of innovations, standard alliances, technology collaboration, and outsourcing, involve a multitude of relationships between firms. This study proposes a latent space approach to model temporal change in a dual-view interfirm network. We assume that interfirm relationships depend on an underlying latent space; firms that are close to each other in the latent space are more likely to develop a relationship. We construct the latent space by embedding two dynamic networks of firms in an integrated manner, resulting in a more comprehensive view of an interfirm relationship. We validate our approach by introducing three business measures derived from the latent space model to study alliance formation and stock comovement. We illustrate how the trajectories of firms provide insights into alliance activities. We also show that our proposed measures have strong predictive power on stock comovement. We believe the proposed approach enriches the methodology toolbox of IS researchers in studying interfirm relationships. Collapse

Abstract: Smart service systems are like a tigerthey are difficult to tame. This is largely rooted in their complexity, which results from the involvement of multiple actors and the interaction of multiple disciplines. Smart service systems engineering requires the development of value propositions that integrate both smart products and smart services based on data analytics, cloud computing, and digital platforms. Therefore, a large variety of tasks must be performed to successfully engineer such systems. While academia has proposed different methods, techniques, and tools (means) to support these tasks, it remains unclear how smart service systems are engineered in practice and for what outcome (ends) the means are used for. This paper aims to address this shortcoming by conducting 14 in-depth interviews with experts who were involved in smart service systems engineering projects. Our qualitative data analysis resulted in an extensive set of means, ends and challenges that we were able to structure along the design dimensions value, process, and resource, as well as the overarching dimension of project management. Based on the interview data, we discussed the suitability of existing means, and approached the question whether it is necessary to leverage the adoption of existing methods in practice or rather to develop new, more practically useful methods instead. With this study, we contribute to academia by advancing our understanding of the suitability of methods for smart service systems engineering and call for creating and promoting toolboxes of easy-to-use and flexible means. Our insights are also helpful for practitioners to better assess challenges and ends for their smart service innovation initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: In the construction sector, projects for building complex structures often exceed estimated costs and time. Therefore, enterprises in this sector rethink and improve their processes. For addressing this challenge, the discipline of Building Information Modeling (BIM) developed new process models to optimize the lifecycle of structures by leveraging technology and data sharing. Recently, enterprises explored the use of IoT technology for generating valid and up-to-date data. In this paper, we present an IoT capabilities map for BIM. This map employs BIM phases and capabilities to provide a structured overview of use cases from the literature and an empirical study we conducted in the rail construction sector. The map helps to guide further research in this area and provides blueprints for companies in the construction industry that seek to make use of IoT for improving their processes. Collapse
