Abstract: This study draws from the information technology (IT)-enabled organizational capabilities perspective, tech­ nology affordance theory, and theoretical foundations of organizational gamification to examine how firms’ usage of mobile technology may be associated with the execution of human resource (HR) gamification initia­ tives and its effect on employee job performance and financial performance. Our central thesis was tested with a survey dataset from 134 firms. We found that: (1) Mobile technology-enabled HR gamification initiative im­ proves job satisfaction and employee engagement and (2) employee engagement and job satisfaction are the pathways to improve job performance and create business value from IT. Abstract: How do digital technologies (e.g. AI and big data) versus cybersecurity initiatives diffuse along the supply chain? Based on digitization and cybersecurity words in 10-K filings from 1998 to 2016, we find that suppliers learn from customer firms in adopting digital technologies, and the learning is more effective when the supply chain relationship lasts longer and when the business overlap is greater. In contrast, customer firms pre-select suppliers with comparable cybersecurity commitments. This paper highlights the nature of technology in its diffusion process along the supply chain. Collapse

Abstract: Recent studies on the business value of information technology (BVIT) investments have focused on understanding IT’s impact on firm performance, either in the context of other organizational resources or in the light of contingency factors. This study extends the prior literature by integrating these two perspectives and examining the BVIT while simultaneously considering other organizational resources and one important contingency factor—environmental turbulence. We develop a contingent interaction model, proposing that a firm’s IT interacts differently with a resource focused on fostering innovation (i.e., research and development [R&D]) and a resource focused on enhancing the competitive gains in the market (i.e., advertising), depending on the extent of environmental turbulence in its industry. Specifically, we hypothesize that as the extent of environmental turbulence in a firm’s industry increases, the positive effect of the interaction between IT and R&D investments on firm performance increases, but the positive effect of the interaction between IT and advertising investments on firm performance decreases. Our findings, based on a longitudinal sample of 294 firms observed from 1999 to 2008 and collected from three archival sources (InformationWeek, COMPUSTAT, and CRSP) provide evidence that supports the proposed hypotheses. Additionally, the results of a splitsample analysis reveal that the interaction between IT and R&D has a positive effect on firm performance in turbulent environments but a negative effect in stable environments. Conversely, the interaction between IT and advertising has a negative effect on firm performance in turbulent environments but a positive effect in stable environments. Put together, these findings indicate that a firm’s IT interacts differently with other organizational resources depending on (a) the resource’s focus on value creation through innovation or value appropriation in the market; and (b) the extent of turbulence in the firm’s industry. Abstract: The emergence of big data has stimulated enormous investments into business analytics solutions, but large-scale and reliable empirical evidence about the business value of big data and analytics (BDA) remains scarce. This article presents the results of an econometric study that analyzes the direction, sign, and magnitude of the relationship between BDA and firm performance based on objective measurements of BDA assets. Using a unique panel data set that contains detailed information about BDA solutions owned by 814 companies during the time frame from 2008 to 2014, on the one hand, and their financial performance, on the other hand, we estimate the relationship between BDA assets and firm productivity and find that live BDA assets are associated with an average of 3-7 percent improvement in firm productivity. Yet we also find substantial differences in returns from BDA when we consider the industry in which a firm operates. While firms in information technology- intensive or highly competitive industries are clearly able to extract value from BDA assets, we did not detect measurable productivity improvement for firms outside these industry groups. Taken together, our findings provide robust empirical evidence for the business value of BDA, but also highlight important boundary conditions. Collapse

Abstract: Virtual worlds are relatively nascent IT platforms with the potential to radically transform business processes and generate significant payoffs. However, in striving to achieve specific outcomes, firms may incur significant risks. Although many companies claim to have attained substantial benefits from their virtual world initiatives, many others have recently scaled down or even abandoned their experimental virtual world projects. This paper assesses the value proposition of virtual world initiatives from the real options perspective. Specifically, we argue that virtual worlds act as a firm's growth option, and we adopt the lens of real options to evaluate the value of this emerging and uncertain technological platform. We employ the event study method to assess the stock market's perception of the future revenue streams of 261 virtual world initiatives announced between 2006 and 2008. Our results indicate that, overall, the market reacts positively to virtual world initiatives. Our findings also show that investors' reactions to virtual world initiatives are contingent on four key characteristics of virtual world initiatives: interpretive flexibility (i.e., technologies that allow managers to experiment), divisibility (i.e., ability to incrementally implement the technology), strategic importance (i.e., an initiative that affects a process of strategic importance to the firm), and exploitable absorptive capacity (i.e., ability to exploit the knowledge acquired through the initiative). We discuss the key implications for real-world practitioners and suggest directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we empirically investigate the impact of information technology (IT) investment on firm return and risk financial performance, emphasizing the moderating role of the firm boundary strategies of diversification and vertical integration. Our results indicate a sharp contrast between the direct and interactive effects of IT on both the return (profitability) and risk (variability of returns) dimensions. Although the direct effect of IT capital is to increase firm risk for a given level of return, we find that suitable boundary strategies can moderate the impact of IT on firm performance in a way that increases return and decreases risk, at the margin. This interaction effect is strongest in service firms, in firms with high levels of IT investment intensity, and in more recent time periods. Our results are robust to alternative proxies for firm risk, including an ex ante risk measure (variability of analysts' earnings estimates), and alternative risk-return specifications. Put together, our results provide new insights into how IT and firm boundary strategies interact to affect the risk and return performance of firms. Collapse

Abstract: On the premise of the process model and the resource‐based view, the study uses government regulation policies, as well as e‐government actions, as an environmental resource to investigate the impacts on firms' IT usage. By analysing the survey data from 1,540 firms across 14 industries in Shanghai, the study contributes several insights to the IT usage and e‐business practice of Chinese firms. First of all, this study sheds light on the value creation process of firms' informatization in Shanghai and validates the route from IT investment to value realization. Second, the findings suggest that e‐government actions influence firms' IT infrastructure development, while government promotion and regulation policies influence a firm's IT management decision. However, there is no evidence showing the government impact on firms' IT usage level. Third, the study finds that e‐government approaches and government promotion policies have significant impact on manufacturing firms. Collapse

Abstract: As motivations of Information Technology (IT) outsourcing are evolving from a primary focus on cost reduction to an emerging emphasis on improving business performance, it is imperative for organizations to align their outsourcing strategy with their business strategy in order to reap better outsourcing benefits and firm performance. Accordingly, a critical challenge facing organizations is how to effectively organize and manage a well-planned outsourcing strategy in accordance with the direction of a business strategy. With the premise that organizations with the fit between business strategy (i.e., defenders, prospectors, and analyzers) and outsourcing strategy (i.e., independent, arm’s length, and embedded strategies) are expected to have better outsourcing benefits and organizational performance than those without such fit, this study seeks to answer the following questions: First, are certain outsourcing strategies more effective than others in particular business strategies?; Second, do their effective alignments positively affect outsourcing benefits and firm performance? To answer these questions, we hypothesize three theoretically feasible sets of internally congruent patterns between business strategy and outsourcing strategy which lead to a greater achievement of outsourcing benefits and firm performance as compared with misfit patterns between them. Empirical data gathered from 136 organizations in Korea that have outsourced their IT functions to external service providers are analyzed. The empirical evidence shows that outsourcing alignment with business strategy significantly influences the outsourcing success and firm performance of defenders, analyzers, and prospectors. Abstract: Managing electronic trading partner relationships is a key to successful development of an interorganizational systems (IOS) network. Firms often exercise their power and offer reciprocal investments to their trading partners in developing an IOS network. However, limited effort has been made to empirically validate their effects on increasing IOS usage between trading partners. This paper gauges the effects of these two relational factors--power and reciprocal investments--within the context of an electronic data interchange (EDI) network development. Moreover, the role of channel climate in increasing EDI usage is explicated with a particular focus on its determinants and impacts. With insights obtained from social exchange and transaction cost theories, a research model is developed and tested with data collected from 233 suppliers with electronic linkages via EDI with a nationally recognized retailer of home improvement supplies and materials in the United States. The customer's reciprocal investments in the form of BDI-related support are proven to be effective in increasing EDI volume and diversity. However, power exercised is found to be not effective. Suppliers' cooperation with the customer, which is influenced by perceived uncertainty, trust, and transaction-specific investments, is found to have strong effects on EDI volume and diversity. Finally, the reciprocal investments are found to be an even more effective strategy when suppliers desire to keep a more cooperative relationship with the customer. Collapse

Abstract: Grounded in the innovation diffusion literature and the resource-based theory, this paper develops an integrative research model for assessing the diffusion and consequence of e-business at the firm level. Unlike the typical focus on adoption as found in the literature, we focus on postadoption stages, that is, actual usage and value creation. The model thus moves beyond dichotomous "adoption versus nonadoption" and accounts for the :missing link"-actual usage-as a critical stage of value creation. The model links technological, organizational, and environmental factors to e-business use and value, based on which a series of hypotheses are developed. The theoretical model is tested by using structural equation modeling on a dataset of 624 firms across 10 countries in the retail industry. To probe deeper into whether e-business use and value are influenced by economic environments, two subsamples from developed and developing countries are compared. The study finds that technology competence, firm size, financial commitment, competitive pressure, and regulatory support are important antecedents of e-business use. In addition, the study finds that, while both front-end and back-end capabilities contribute to e-business value, back-end integration has a much stronger impact. While front-end functionalities are becoming commodities, e-businesses are more differentiated by back-end integration. This is consistent with the resource-based theory because back-end integration possesses the value-creating characteristics of resources (e.g., firm specific, difficult to imitate), which are strengthened by the Internet-enabled connectivity. Our study also adds an international dimension to the innovation diffusion literature, showing that careful attention must be paid to the economic and regulatory factors that may affect technology diffusion across different countries.
