Abstract: Technology pivots help digital startups, which are operating in environments of great uncertainty, to make considerable adjustments to the technology underpinning their products. Technology pivots are resource intensive and risky endeavors, especially while growing into viable and sustainable businesses. For these reasons, a well composed team able to perform these pivots effectively is required. While existing research focuses on the identification of antecedents and consequences of technology pivots, we provide insights as to whether digital startups apply anticipatory mindsets throughout team composition, starting early with the formulation of job advertisements. We analyze the extent to which the antecedents of technology pivots form part of job advertisements published by digital startups. Performing a content analysis on 510 IT job advertisements we find very limited references to the (non-)technical antecedents of technology pivots. Our study provides the basis for research extending beyond the analysis of antecedences and consequences of technology pivots. Collapse

Abstract: The importance of matching IS workers’ skills with the skills needs of organizations is often addressed within the academic and practitioner literature. This study analyzes the changes in job skill requirements in IS job advertisements in an attempt to identify the skills required by organizations in the Internet era. The analyses will be accomplished through the use of a methodology which was developed by Todd et al. in a study of IS job advertisements for the period of 1970 to 1990. In the Todd study, the authors found little difference in the skill requirements for IS personnel other than a small increase in technical skills for systems analyst advertisements. In the current study, initial findings are presented that indicate that although many skill requirements have remained stable as found by Todd et al., some skill requirements appear to have shifted in ways not expected before the study began. Abstract: Changes in the knowledge and skill requirements of information systems (IS) positions were examined by analyzing the content of advertisements for IS professionals placed in four major newspapers over the 20-year period 1970-1990. Three types of jobs were examined: programmers, systems analysts, and IS managers.
