Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore retired/retiring esports players’ experience of transitioning out of esports. To provide in-depth insights into esports players’ transition experiences that may contribute to young players being better prepared for their own transitions, a qualitative approach was applied and four retired professional esports players in South Korea were interviewed. Thematic analysis was applied, and four themes were identified: Pressure and Uncertainty; Lack of Pre-Retirement Planning; Need for Mentorship; Need for Realism about Talent. The findings highlight that esports players experience pressure and struggle with job/finance insecurity during their careers, and that this contributes significantly to their retirement decisions. Lack of pre-retirement planning causes them to be ill-prepared for their life after esports. The study provides empirical evidence which should encourage the industry and stakeholders to establish structured systems to support esports players’ transitions out of esports. Collapse

Abstract: Agile software development has been shown to alleviate stress and improve satisfaction levels in development teams. Since this development approach relies on strong user involvement, these effects might carry over to the users themselves. If users have a positive perception of the agile approach, they might be more receptive to the produced software. However, users are rarely aware of the underlying development methodology and are, therefore, only partly affected by it. Hence, this study develops a new construct to measure users’ perception of the development methodology and to investigate the effects on technostress and user satisfaction. A survey with 117 beta users was conducted showing that perceiving a development process as agile lowers users’ technostress and elevates their satisfaction levels. Our Results highlight the essential role of user communication in the development phase. We discuss our implications for theory and practice, and conclude with promising future research avenues. Abstract: Work is increasingly being organised via online platforms outside guiding organisational structures. Instead of having colleagues at work, crowd workers connect in online communities. We investigate how crowd workers build professional holding environments in online communities to compensate for the lack of organisational structures and we consider how they craft their crowd work activities to enhance their work experience and reduce its long-term precarity. Following a qualitative research design, this paper uses 675 forum interactions collected across six online communities. Based on our findings, we propose the concept of professional holding environments and provide a model for building such holding environments and job crafting in online communities. We thereby expand previous research on holding environments comprised of family members and friends by revealing the impact of professional online communities and their role in professionalisation and crafting supportive social structures in online crowd work. Abstract: Past research suggests that the demands of information security policies (ISPs) cause stress upon employees, leading them to violate the policies. It emphasises the distress process but overlooks a possible positive process that may arise from the ISP demands (i.e., the eustress process) and motivate employees to reduce ISP violations. This study explores both the distress and eustress processes. It proposes that the challenge and hindrance aspects of ISP demands induce these processes and subsequently affect ISP violations. Besides, employees’ ISP-related self-efficacy may facilitate or impede these processes. To test the research model, a survey was conducted on 375 employees in the U.S. The results show that the challenge aspect of ISP demands elicits a positive psychological response of employees, which in turn triggers their planful problem-solving to deal with these demands. In contrast, the hindrance aspect of ISP demands provokes a negative psychological response that triggers employees’ wishful thinking about ISP demands. Meanwhile, employees’ self-efficacy strengthens the effect of positive psychological response on planful problem-solving. Subsequently, planful problem-solving reduces employees’ intention to violate the ISP, while wishful thinking increases their intention. This dual-process view sheds new light on the connection between ISP demands and ISP violation intention. Collapse

Abstract: Individuality matters. While information technology (IT) is important, more critical for the success of IS functions in an organization are its people, their values, attitudes, norms, and behavior. There are differences among IT professionals, not only at the organizational level, but also at the global level. Using data collected from more than 10,000 IT employees in 37 countries under the World IT Project, this study examines some fundamental issues of IT workers from a global perspective. While there are differences, we find that almost universally, nine individual issues are important across many countries, and they are interrelated in a similar manner. IT employees in some countries maintain stronger social bonds among themselves than those in others, which provide them with the necessary social capital to utilize in times of high work exhaustion, environmental dynamism and insecurity, as well as their efforts to change jobs. In difficult situations, the professional self-efficacy of the workers secures them. A significant number of IT employees feel that excessive work overload upsets the balance between their lives at home and workplace demands. Nevertheless, an intellectually stimulating and well-balanced work environment ensures job satisfaction for a significant number of IT employees in many countries. Collapse

However, introducing AI may negatively impact employees’ identifications with their jobs as AI is expected to fundamentally change workplaces and professions, feeding into individuals’ fears of being replaced. To broaden the understanding of the AI identity threat, the findings of this study reveal three central predictors for AI identity threat in the workplace: changes to work, loss of status position, and AI identity predicting AI identity threat in the workplace. This study enriches information systems literature by extending our understanding of collaboration with AI in the workplace to drive future research in this field. Researchers and practitioners understand the implications of employees’ identity when collaborating with AI and comprehend which factors are relevant when introducing AI in the workplace. Collapse

Abstract: Enterprise social networks (ESNs) foster internal information exchange, knowledge management, and organizational learning, among other things, and are thus essential in the digital workplace. The use of ESNs in companies can support employees' performance and result in positive outcomes. However, literature on technostress and social media use stresses that ESNs can also negatively affect employees. Research in this context often focuses on public social media, as well as on the implementation phase in companies but not on long-term use within companies. In this study, we investigate possible ESNinduced stressors and their effects on employee ESN use in the context of a company-internal social platform implemented several years ago. We conducted a single case study in the German office of a global company in the health industry. The results indicate that technostressors overload, uncertainty, complexity, job insecurity, invasion of privacy, work-home conflict, involuntary levels of participation, diminished reputation, lack of experience, and language barriers negatively affect employees ESN use. These are moderated by personality traits, traits, confidence levels regarding ESN use, skills, corporate culture, and employees attitudes toward ESN. Collapse

Abstract: Micro-task crowdsourcing (MTCS) arrangements have increasingly gained importance as alternatives to traditional work arrangements. Many crowdworkers participate on MTCS platforms as they value the opportunity to work independently, be creative or engage in a wide variety of tasks. However, little attention has so far been given to those crowdworkers who heavily rely on MTCS arrangements as they face impeding career barriers in traditional work arrangements. Therefore, we know little on which career barriers in traditional work arrangements encourage crowdworkers to work via MTCS platforms, and how MTCS arrangements can contribute to evading these impeding barriers. This is however a crucial perspective for enhancing our understanding of the impact MTCS arrangements have and their potential to create a more inclusive overall labor market. Building on qualitative data from open questionnaires answered by 286 active crowdworkers, and a netnographic approach covering 576 forum posts, we reveal that crowdworkers dominantly face career barriers in traditional work arrangements due to intensive social commitments, physical and mental issues and demographic characteristics. As MTCS arrangements are released from fixed attendance, direct social relations and rigid selection processes, they contribute to evading these barriers.
