Abstract: IT security compliance is critical to the organization's success, and such compliance depends largely on IT leadership. Despite the growing female leadership and the prevalence of unconscious gender bias and stereotyping in IT, there is little research that examines gender stereotypes and internalization factors in the context of IT leadership and security compliance. The evidence from our experiment using data from MTurk suggests that gender -both CIOs' and employees', plays an important role in how IT leadership characteristics -perceived expertise and leadership style influences the employees' intentions and reactance to comply with CIO's security recommendations. The study informs IT literature on the role of the security message sender's characteristics and guides CIOs, particularly women, on how they can tailor their leadership style to increase security compliance. Our research provides several theoretical, managerial and social implications while responding to the calls for increased attention to social inclusion issues in IT. Collapse

Abstract: This study aims to investigate how firms can prepare for artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and how AI creates business values for adopting firms. We propose that, first, leveraging AI for value creation depends on the presence of an enabling resource foundation, consisting of a stack of technological and managerial resources. According to the real options theory, the stronger such a resource foundation is, the more valuable the option it creates for a firm to adopt AI, and consequently the firm is more likely to exercise the option to adopt. Second, we propose that, after adoption, the depth of AI use can have negative impacts on employee productivity, while the breadth of AI use can have positive impacts. We empirically validate these hypotheses based on a sample of 6,854 manufacturing firms in a coastal province in China. Collapse

Managing the inner workings of collective intelligence approaches for wicked problems -An assessment model and evaluation. Abstract:Ill-defined and complex problems that affect multiple stakeholders with potentially conflicting perspectives are often referred to as wicked problems. The utilization of collective intelligence (CI) via web-based platforms is a promising approach for addressing such wicked problems. The management of these information systems would benefit from evidence-based decision support regarding facilitation and improvement efforts. However, to date, there is no suitable model to guide such efforts. Existing approaches address specific applications or cover certain assessment areas but do not provide a holistic perspective. Meanwhile, research offers substantial insights into best practices for addressing wicked problems and running CI applications. This paper develops an assessment model comprising five central success dimensions for information systems that address wicked problems. Their subdimensions and associated measurement metrics allow for evidence-driven facilitation and improvement of CI applications for wicked problems. Apart from the model's capability to improve future runs and processes, it also offers the potential to provide immediate insights for facilitation efforts during runtime. The model was validated with a platform dealing with the assessment of risks presented by global climate change. This evaluation generated strong evidence for the model's applicability and usefulness.Henner Gimpel is the Chair of Digital Management at the University of Hohenheim, is a member of the Research Center for Information Management (FIM), and is the academic director of the Digital Leadership Academy. His work on MIT Center for Collective Intelligence's (CCI) CoLab platforms seeks to harness the collective intelligence of large numbers of people, from all around the world, to address big, complex problems. He came to MIT in the late 1990s to join the Initiative on Inventing the Organizations of the 21st Century (21C), which examined how information technology was transforming business organizations and how those changes were reshaping employment arrangements. Abstract: As information technology is considered a key driver of firm's innovation, the role of a chief information officer (CIO) has been emphasized. However, firms face frequent CIO turnover. Thus, in this study, we argue that it is important to investigate the impact of CIO turnover on a firm's innovativeness, and the spillover effect of CIO turnover on competitors' innovativeness. We then propose a novel approach to testing these causal inferences of CIO turnover. We found that CIO turnover did not have a significant direct effect on its focal firm. However, the spillover effect is significant and positive, implying that firms produce more patents when their competitors experience CIO turnover than if CIOs at competing firms had not been dismissed. Since losing a CIO has ripple effects throughout the whole industry, firms should consider the unintended consequences of their decisions regarding CIO turnover. Collapse

Abstract: While digital leadership competencies have been recognized as key to succeed with digital transformation, there is a lack of a common understanding about what constitutes such competencies specifically in the public sector-a sector that faces particular challenges with digitally transforming. This structured literature review adds to the existing body of knowledge on digital leadership by synthesizing what is known about the required competencies of digital leaders in the public sector. Based on 25 relevant publications from different databases and disciplines, we identified 44 sub-competencies classified into seven categories of key competencies. In addition, several measures for digital leadership skill development and recruitment could be identified that help building these competencies. While researchers can use our findings to advance knowledge in this research area, practitioners in the public sector can apply our framework to assess their leadership competencies for the digital transformation. Abstract: Several organisations have introduced a new leadership role, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO), as a centralised role in their top management team (TMT), tasked with accelerating and coordinating their digital transformation. While previous research proposes a complementary, tight alignment between the CDO and the Chief Information Officer (CIO), role redundancies and the fight for recognition and resources also suggest an inherent tension. We provide insights into the CIO-CDO collaboration quality based on role, TMT cooperation, conflict theory, and a dyadic design approach of 11 CIO-CDO relationships with 33 expert interviews in two waves. Our findings indicate that the CIO-CDO relationship may not always be as complementary as proposed in the literature; instead, in the vast majority of our dyads, there is too much role conflict to achieve tight alignment, leading to separation behaviour between the roles. We identify the involvement in the introduction of the other role, the CIO demand-side orientation, and the CDO supply-side orientation as important contingency factors determining the quality of the CIO-CDO relationship. Finally, unless the CIO-CDO relationship resembles a perfect match, a unified Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) role may better resolve the challenges we identify in our sample’s dyads. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic forced organizations, including higher education institutions, to rapidly adjust their operations. In the face of the pandemic, most higher education institutions shut down their campuses and transitioned to emergency remote teaching mode. This study examines digital resilience in higher education institutions through the conceptual lens of disaster response management, by assessing the role played by the centralized governance of information technology (IT) investments. We posit that centralized IT helps organizations maintain customer satisfaction with services during a crisis (e.g., student satisfaction with classes during COVID-19) by facilitating the organization-wide transition to an emergency operational mode and supporting its service operations. Consolidating data on IT investment, governance, and course evaluations from 463 U.S. higher education institutions from 2017-2020, we show that centralized IT helped organizations adapt better to the pandemic in terms of maintaining student satisfaction. Moreover, we found that centralized IT investments geared toward facilitating organizational coordination and providing instructional and technical support played a pivotal role in enabling ERT and improving student ratings during the crisis. These results are corroborated by interviews with CIOs of U.S. higher education institutions. Additional analyses also suggest that the effectiveness of centralized IT governance is contingent upon organizational size, dissimilarity of local units, and the strategic role of the CIO. We also discuss theoretical extensions toward digital resilience as well as practical implications. Collapse
