Abstract: Significant investments in information systems (IS) over the past decades have led to increasingly complex IS architectures in organisations, which are difficult to understand, operate, and maintain. We investigate this development and associated challenges through a conceptual model that distinguishes four constituent elements of IS architecture complexity by differentiating technological from organisational aspects and structural from dynamic aspects. Building on this conceptualisation, we hypothesise relations between these four IS architecture complexity constructs and investigate their impact on architectural outcomes (i.e., efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability). Using survey data from 249 IS managers, we test our model through a partial least squares (PLS) approach to structural equation modelling (SEM). We find that organisational complexity drives technological complexity and that structural complexity drives dynamic complexity. We also demonstrate that increasing IS architecture complexity has a significant negative impact on efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability. Finally, we show that enterprise architecture management (EAM) helps to offset these negative effects by acting as a moderator in the relation between organisational and technological IS architecture complexity. Thus, organisations without adequate EAM are likely to face large increases in technological complexity due to increasing organisational complexity, whereas organisations with adequate EAM exhibit no such relation. Abstract: Gamification offers one of the most promising solutions for information technology (IT) managers to innovate performance management systems. Yet, evidence on its benefits is limited, and IT managers are left without a clear guidance on why to implement it. To solve the problem, this article shows the benefits of gamification for overall job performance and the intermediating mechanisms through which it exercises its advantageous effects. It is theorized that employees’ engagement in gamification favorably alters their cognitions, transferring their effect onto employee attitudes and behaviors in the workplace. First, user engagement in gamification alters cognitions about the performance management system, making employees perceive justice, which, in turn, af­ fects their satisfaction with the performance system. Second, user engagement in gamification alters cognitions about the job, influencing the perceptions of job stressors that affect job satisfaction. Third, user engagement in gamification alters cognitions about the organization, making employees perceive organizational support, which translates into higher organizational commitment. The improved cognitions then transfer their beneficial effect onto overall job performance as justice is found to exercise a mediating effect. The findings from 268 employees in a human resource service organization support the hypotheses and provide concrete evidence for the benefits of gamification in performance management. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation (DT) is widely acknowledged as an effective strategy to enhance revenue and business operations efficiency. However, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) often face significant challenges in implementing DT initiatives due to their inherent resource constraints, such as limited financial resources or a small workforce. Unfortunately, existing literature on how SMEs can effectively embrace digital transformation is limited; available frameworks are primarily tailored to large organizations with more resources. Hence, this study aims to develop a pragmatic DT framework specifically designed to aid SMEs in overcoming resource constraints that impede their successful DT transformation, while also leveraging their agile capability. The digital transformation framework was developed by combining prior literature with insights gathered through focus group discussions with industry experts from various industries. Our research contributes to the existing digital transformation literature by formulating a novel resource-considerate framework that caters to SMEs' unique characteristics, allowing them to implement DT initiatives without overburdening their limited resources. Abstract: Literature has shown that business-information technology (IT) alignment can exert both positive and negative influences on organizational agility, giving rise to the IT alignment-agility paradox. To better understand this paradox at a more granular level, we conceptualize the sensing and responding dimensions of organizational agility as two independent constructs and suggest a nonlinear analytical approach. Based on configurational and contextual perspectives, this study investigates how intellectual and social alignment and organizational and environmental elements combine into multiple configurations to affect sensing and responding capabilities. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is used to analyze the survey data from 135 dyads of business and IT executives from the Chinese shipbuilding industry. Results show that different equifinal pathways can be used to achieve high sensing and responding capabilities, in which intellectual and social alignment play heterogeneous roles depending on the specific contexts. This study extends the ITenabled agility literature by deepening our understanding of the effects of multidimensional IT alignment on multidimensional organizational agility and providing new insights into the IT alignment-agility paradox. Abstract: Nonmalicious information security violations (NISV) that employees engage in can pose a problem to organizations. The Social Cognitive Theory was used to investigate the roles of three constructs, (a) peer support, (b) perceived organizational support, and (c) personal goal setting in reducing NISV. The study also examined the interactions among the three variables. Relevant hypotheses were formulated, and survey data were obtained from 204 German workers. The partial least squares technique was used for data analysis. The results showed that the three factors could reduce employee engagement in NISV.Another key finding of the study indicates that the interaction between personal goal setting in reducing engagement in NISV and peer support significantly reduced employee participation in NISV. In contrast, the interaction between perceived organizational support and personal goal setting related to NISV avoidance did not. The implications of the study's findings for practice and contributions to research were discussed.Employees engage more in nonmalicious information security violations (e.g., visiting non-related websites and disclosing work passwords to others) than in malicious acts (e.g., sabotage or theft). Research on how to diminish such behaviors is emerging. This study contributed to that discourse by examining the roles of personal goal setting regarding avoiding NISV, peer support to shun NISV, and Peer, Organizational Support, Goal setting, and Nonmalicious Security Violations Twenty-ninth Americas Conference on Information Systems, Panama, 2023 9 perceived organizational support in reducing employee engagement in the behavior. The data confirmed the significant impact of the three factors in diminishing workers' urges to engage in such behaviors. The result also showed that the combination of personal goal setting regarding avoiding NISV and peer support to avoid such practices could engender desired outcomes. Abstract: Although cloud computing is associated with organizational agility, anecdotal evidence points to resistance to cloud computing by employees in information technology (IT) units. We explored the links between software as a service (SaaS) and organizational agility by conducting two stages of interviews with key informants in large organizations, and by employing affordance and inertia-theoretical lenses. Two basic affordances emerged from the retroductive data analysis –implementing quickly and sourcing independently – which in turn yielded two higher-level affordances: trialing alternatives and self-organizing business teams. We developed a model that explains how and why these four affordances enhance agility by accelerating the sensing-toacting process of organizations. We also describe how five categories of organizational inertia in IT units hinder agility. Our main contribution is how adopting SaaS applications enables orga­ nizational agility while highlighting the role of IT unit inertia in SaaS affordance actualization processes. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the relevance and maturity of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) research field, no studies exist that exhaustively summarize the current body of knowledge, focusing on the development of the field over its entire timespan. The paper at hand addresses this research gap and presents an exhaustive literature review on the CIO research field using main path analysis. We identify the central papers in CIO research and eight main research streams by quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing 466 papers. We find that established research streams, e.g., 'Evolving role of the CIO' and 'CIO hierarchical position and relationships' as well as recently emerging research streams, e.g., 'CIO as business enabler' and 'CIOs and IT security,' draw growing attention. Based on our findings, we develop promising further avenues for research in the CIO field. Collapse

Abstract: Agility has long been recognised as a key determinant of organisational performance. The pursuit of agility within business units (BUs) is challenging as IT executives in multi-business organisations (MBOs) are tasked with balancing a need for organisation-wide IT synergies against a desire among BUs for local IT solutions that enable agility in their end markets. MBOs are increasingly turning to corporate IT platforms to respond to their BUs’ IT needs but doing so presents a challenge to BU IT autonomy and, in turn, to BU agility. In this paper, we posit that BU agility is determined by resource synergies based on the interplay between corporate IT platforms and local, BU-controlled, IT applications. These applications lead to greater BU process digitisation and, in turn, to expanded BU agility. We evaluate our model using data from an international survey of IT executives in MBOs. Our findings provide support for our model and, in so doing, identify different paths that MBOs can take to enhance BU agility. Our contribution affirms the value of corporate IT platforms for BU agility but suggests that MBOs should tread carefully when developing corporate IT platforms that coincide with mandatory use of shared IT applications. Abstract: The use of social media for business is becoming a new norm for gaining business intelligence. While research work is increasing on social media analytics (SMA) for some aspects of business intelligence, the knowledge of how SMA facilitates product intelligence (PI) is still very limited. To address the gap, the data from qualitative interviews was analyzed using NVivo coding and matrix queries. The results show that products, processes, and people underpin the mechanism for providing SMA-enabled PI. Serving dichotomous objectives, people act as (1) conduits for providing insights about products and processes and (2) subjects for gathering behavioral insights. The PI gathered about the products could help understanding of the process effectiveness and be used for planning, product, and promotional strategy development. Because of the impulsive nature of SM, while the utility of PI from SMA may be limited to gaining short-to-medium-term benefits, it is an important indicator of customer and market sentiments. Theoretically, the study develops a framework of SMA-enabled PI, highlighting the mechanism that yields PI and advancing knowledge on the role of SMA in improving business efficiencies. The results provide managerial insights about the levers and limitations to guide the design of SMA strategies for acquiring PI. Collapse

Abstract: ID cards, public transport tickets, and diplomas are examples of credentials that society has established as a means to provide trustworthy information to others. In the digital world, the emergence of self-sovereign identity as a new paradigm for the management of digital credentials aims to narrow the conceptual gap between digital and physical credentials. The ongoing digital transformation in the public sector requires dealing with a large variety of credentials in different forms systematically. However, there is still currently no generic conceptual model of credentials in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. We employ design science research to develop a unified meta-model on credentials, their use, and their governance. Our results contribute to research through an empirically grounded conceptualization of credentials and provide practitioners with a common basis to capture, analyze, and design the handling of credentials in real-world scenarios.
