Abstract: Despite the consensus that considering social factors is as important as economic and environmental dimensions for long-term successful, sustainable energy development projects, there is a lack of quantifiable assessments in multi-energy simulation decision support systems. Therefore, we applied a design science research approach to develop an energy system simulator that includes all three dimensions of sustainability. Based on a rigorous literature review and expert interviews, we establish a framework for assessing social sustainability. We then implement the derived criteria and indicators in the open-access software NESSI and validate it in an applicability check for a Madagasi neighborhood. With our framework, we aim to provide guidance to researchers and stakeholders on incorporating the social sustainability dimension into their approaches, tools, and decision-making process. The user-friendly, web-based simulation software enables various stakeholders to explore the interrelationships of threefold sustainability in specific energy systems. Abstract: As organizations have become increasingly reliant on information systems, senior managers are keen in assessing the progress of implemented information security strategies. Although the balanced scorecard approach has been suggested for security governance, a critical issue affecting information security practitioners is complexity, as there are many standards and frameworks, with duplication and overlaps to adhere to when organizing the data. Consequently, the article attempts to develop a more inclusive framework for information security governance, a research gap recently identified in the literature. The article maps five governance and control frameworks (COBIT, SABSA, ISG, ITIL, and ISO 27000) to the information security balanced scorecard (InfoSec BSC) to develop a conceptual design of an effective information security performance measurement tool that can be used by senior managers. Using a real-life case application and interviews with a panel of experts, the article identifies IS initiatives, performance measures for each of the mapped objectives derived from governance and control frameworks that may provide guidance for practitioners. Abstract: The phenomenon of Technostress (TS) -the stress experienced by end-users of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) -is often considered as a dark side of technology use. TS creators, factors that create TS, is a second-order construct with dimensions techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. This study takes a holistic approach by proposing how the complex interactions among individual characteristics, IT features, and environmental factors influence employees' perceptions of TS creators. Based on past research, we include three personality traits, i.e., neuroticism, personal innovativeness in IT, and IT mindfulness for individual characteristics. Additionally, two technological features, presenteeism and anonymity are considered, while literacy facilitation, technical support provision, and social support are the environmental factors. Data will be collected using an online survey from full-time employees and analyzed using fuzzy sets qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic forced organizations, including higher education institutions, to rapidly adjust their operations. In the face of the pandemic, most higher education institutions shut down their campuses and transitioned to emergency remote teaching mode. This study examines digital resilience in higher education institutions through the conceptual lens of disaster response management, by assessing the role played by the centralized governance of information technology (IT) investments. We posit that centralized IT helps organizations maintain customer satisfaction with services during a crisis (e.g., student satisfaction with classes during COVID-19) by facilitating the organization-wide transition to an emergency operational mode and supporting its service operations. Consolidating data on IT investment, governance, and course evaluations from 463 U.S. higher education institutions from 2017-2020, we show that centralized IT helped organizations adapt better to the pandemic in terms of maintaining student satisfaction. Moreover, we found that centralized IT investments geared toward facilitating organizational coordination and providing instructional and technical support played a pivotal role in enabling ERT and improving student ratings during the crisis. These results are corroborated by interviews with CIOs of U.S. higher education institutions. Additional analyses also suggest that the effectiveness of centralized IT governance is contingent upon organizational size, dissimilarity of local units, and the strategic role of the CIO. We also discuss theoretical extensions toward digital resilience as well as practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation incorporates challenges that are unique to the context of AI, such as dealing with probabilistic outputs. To address these challenges, recent research suggests that organizations should develop specific capabilities for AI implementation. Currently, we lack a thorough understanding of how certain capabilities facilitate AI implementation. It remains unclear how they help organizations to cope with AI’s unique characteristics. To address this research gap, we employ a qualitative research approach and conduct 25 explorative interviews with experts on AI implementation. We derive four organizational capabilities for AI implementation: AI Project Planning and Co-Development help to cope with the inscrutability in AI, which complicates the planning of AI projects and communication between different stakeholders. Data Management and AI Model Lifecycle Management help to cope with the data dependency in AI, which challenges organizations to provide the proper data foundation and continuously adjust AI systems as the data evolves. We contribute to our understanding of the sociotechnical implications of AI’s characteristics and further develop the concept of organizational capabilities as an important success factor for AI implementation. Abstract: Various visualization design guides have been proposed and evaluated through quantitative methods that compare the response accuracy and time for completing visualization tasks. However, accuracy and time do not always represent the mental workload. Since quantitative approaches do not fully mirror mental workload, questionnaires and biosignals have been employed to measure mental workload in visualization assessments.The EEG as biosignal is one of the indicators frequently utilized to measure mental workload. Nevertheless, many studies have not applied the EEG for mental workload measurement in the visualization evaluation. In this work, we study the EEG to measure mental workload for visualization evaluation. We examine whether there is a difference in mental workload for the visualization designs suggested by the previously proposed visualization design guides. Besides, we propose a mental workload estimation model using EEG data specialized for each individual to evaluate visualization designs. Collapse

Abstract: Sustained competitive advantage is elusive to organisations, in a volatile contemporary context. Organisational agility (OA), enabled by information technology, offers hope. However, organisations that pursue agility encounter incompatibility with IT project selection (ITPS) -as they select and fund projects, before implementation. Existing ITPS literature provides rich insights into methods, processes and people but is fragmented. Without integration, the incompatibility cannot be resolved. To address this problem, this study conducted a literature review of 159 articles to develop an integrated framework for understanding OA and ITPS. Findings show that methods, processes and people in ITPS can both enable and disable OA. Following conceptual-framework-analysis, ITPS is redefined as an enabler of agility. The resultant three-layered conceptual framework shows that firms can deploy ITPS methods, processes and people that enable sensing, deciding and responding, leading to OA. This study contributes by integrating literature to facilitate further research in this area. Collapse

Abstract: In the digital economy, firms’ IT resource investments represent a significant portion of their capital investments. IT governance processes are critical for companies to decide what and how to deploy IT resources and measure and achieve the expected business benefits. This study introduces and measures the concept of IT governance process capability, which is defined as the firm’s ability to identify, design, implement and leverage the following IT governance processes: IT decision-making, IT planning, IT infrastructure modernization, IT services delivery, and IT monitoring. We propose that IT governance process capability can improve IT performance, which in turn can improve business performance. Using a unique dataset from 881 global companies, we found support for the proposed research model. This paper contributes to the Information Systems (IS) literature on business value of IT by conceptualizing, evaluating, and introducing the construct of IT governance process capability and theorizing and proving how this core IT capability positively affects IT performance to enhance business performance.
