Abstract: The appropriate selection of suitable process models plays an important role for IT project success. To aid in decision-making, IT project management literature offers a plethora of decision models for selecting suitable process models, however, hybrid process models are often neglected and adoption in practice is low or non-existent. To address this challenge, we draw on contingency theory to develop and implement a tool-supported decision model for the selection and evaluation of appropriate process models for IT projects, thereby leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning in the context of a selfenforcing network. Our model provides an objective tool to assess process model suitability. Results from a conducted online survey with project management experts indicate high validity. Therefore, we contribute to the field of IT project management by expanding AI-based decision models for selecting and evaluating process models through extending the range of covered models and implementing inherent weighting of criteria. Abstract: The ongoing digitalization of many corporate functions, including the innovation process, brings about fundamental changes that urge us to rethink established theories. Facilitating digital innovation requires a deep understanding of the actual practices that are carried out by innovating people with the help of artifacts. In this paper, we study the use of artifacts and illustrate their different roles in the underlying innovation practices to provide rich insights into digital innovation from a practice perspective. Grounded in a nearly three year-long, qualitative case study at two Swiss software companies and an extensive set of empirical data, this paper conceptualizes four interrelated digital innovation practices, namely making sense of an idea, aligning mental models, negotiating solution paths, and crafting an idea. We suggest a practice-based model of digital innovation, specify a set of practices for enabling digital innovation in organizations, and clarify the role of artifacts in digital innovation practices. Abstract: As the value of an IT project can change over time, management is in “blind flight” about the state of the project until the project has been re-evaluated. As each evaluation causes costs, continuous evaluation is economically unreasonable. Nevertheless, the “blind flight” should not take too long, because the project value can considerably deviate from its initial estimation and high losses can occur. To trade off costs of re-evaluation and potential loss of project value, this paper will elaborate upon an economic model that is able to determine the optimal time until re-evaluation considering the risky cash flows of a project. Based on a simulation, we find that it makes good economic sense to optimize the interval of re-evaluation. Therefore, companies are able to avoid financial loss caused by evaluating too early as well as hazarding project value caused by evaluating too late. Collapse

Abstract: Considering that current structures are the result of choices made in specific contexts in the past, we adopt a historical perspective in order to understand how some information systems (IS) project management practices evolved and became norms. Using historical methods, we analyze sources of data spanning 52years of IS project management (1945–2007) – interviews with IS project managers and academics, IS project management textbooks, curricula, and the scientific and professional literature – to: (1) determine whether some IS project management practices may now be considered institutionalized, and (2) understand their institutionalization processes over time. Based on this analysis, three groups of IS project management practices may now be considered institutionalized: formal control, external integration, and project risk management. Collapse

Abstract: Many organizations face the challenge of deploying a consistent project methodology. The challenge becomes more significant for global organizations such as Whirlpool Corporation which have a large number of IS projects cutting across business units, geographies and functional areas. In 2010, Whirlpool Corporation, a global leader in the appliance industry, deployed a new waterfall-based IS project management methodology - Whirlpool Delivery Methods (WDM) - as part of a strategic IS transformation initiative. This paper examines Whirlpool’s journey over the past 2 years including the key levers used to drive adoption and diffusion such as the role of IS leadership and project tools. The findings from the Case Study, including Survey feedback from 176 respondents, indicate the need to balance project rigor with speed and flexibility and the importance of tools to support project governance. The paper contributes a practical perspective to large-scale IS project methodology deployment. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the overwhelming advantages of using an IT project management methodology, organizations are rarely able to motivate their staff to use them in a dedicated manner. While empirical research states that the usefulness of a methodology is the single most important determinant of its acceptance and use by actual users, studies have not examined which methodology use outcomes are more important for which type of people in which situations. Our study is a step toward filling the gap in methodology evaluation, development, and adoption literature, which to date has not developed a theoretically and practically complete as well as relevant typology of the costs and benefits of using a methodology and has also not studied the effect of personal traits such as needs. We develop and test a conceptual model, using a pre-test sample of 65 participants, that holds that individual needs determine costs-benefits have a bigger effect on individuals’ committed use of a methodology. Abstract: Prior research on the management of IT offshore outsourcing projects has focused on crosscultural issues or on project and relationship management issues. However, there is still a lack of understanding concerning effective management practices that help to overcome the challenges of client-vendor cultural distance in IT offshoring relationships. Therefore, the goal of this research is to increase our understanding of how the risks that result from this cultural distance in IT offshoring can be mitigated and which management practices must be employed. Thereby, we take both cross-cultural and project management issues into account and focus on the specific interplay between both elements. As research on this topic is scarce, we chose a theory-building and exploratory research design. We conducted an in-depth analysis of a single case from the financial services industry in Germany. Our findings suggest that cultural intelligence and IT project management techniques interact with each other in a reinforcing virtuous circle. Collapse

Abstract: There have been few empirical studies analyzing project management and control techniques to overcome the problems resulting from cross-cultural differences in IT offshore outsourcing projects. Therefore, our research question is “Which project management techniques can be employed to overcome problems due to cross-cultural differences in IT offshore projects?” which is analyzed through an in-depth interpretive single-case study from the European banking industry. The theoretical basis comprises national culture dimensions, effects of cross-cultural differences on project work, and project management and control theory. Our main conclusions are the identification of three project management techniques that can overcome problems due to cross-cultural differences (“cascading deadline approach”, use of “operational process documents”, and “tight controlling and testing”), as well as the theoretical contribution that outcome control is more effective than behavior control in IT offshore outsourcing contexts.
