Abstract: Digitalization is encouraging an increasing number of firms to design their business models based on information technology (IT) for exploring business opportunities. This study examines the effect of the balance (imbalance) between IT exploration and exploitation on novelty-centered business model design (NBMD) and efficiencycentered business model design (EBMD). Using matched data from the IT-related executive and chief execu­ tive officer of 183 firms, this study finds that IT exploration is positively related to NBMD and EBMD and that IT exploitation is positively related to only EBMD. NBMD and EBMD are significantly related to firm performance. Polynomial regression and response surface analysis reveal that NBMD and EBMD first decline and then rise with the increase in the level of balance between IT exploration and exploitation. NBMD declines but EBMD rises with the increase in the level of imbalance between IT exploration and exploitation. This study contributes to the understanding on leveraging IT capability to influence the business model design and firm performance. Collapse

Abstract: Community question answering (CQA) sites have developed into vast collections of valuable knowledge. Questions, as CQA's central component, go through several phases after they are posted, which are often referred to as the questions' lifecycle or questions' lifespan. Different questions have different lifecycles, which are closely linked to the topics of the questions that can be determined by their attached labels. We conduct an empirical analysis based on the dynamic panel data of a Q&A website and propose a framework for explaining the time sensitivity of topic labels. By applying a Discrete Fourier Transform and a Knee point detection method, we demonstrate the existence of three broad label clusters based on their recurring features and four common question lifecycle patterns. We further prove that the lifecycles of questions in disparate clusters vary significantly. The findings support our hypothesis that questions with more time-sensitive labels are more likely to hit their saturation point sooner than questions with less time-sensitive labels. The research results could be applied for better CQA interface design and more efficient digital resources management. Collapse

Abstract: Extending the literature on information technology control weaknesses (ITCWs), we investigate the strategic role of chief information officers (CIOs) in maintaining adequate internal controls and remediating ITCWs. Drawing on institutional theory and sunk cost effect, we develop three hypotheses. We adopt an archival approach and obtain CIO turnover and ITCW data for 890 distinct firms, finding that: (i) ITCW disclosures may not increase the likelihood of CIO turnover, (ii) CIOs’ backgrounds are associated with the likelihood of turnover, and (iii) CIO turnover increases the likelihood of subsequent ITCW remediation. Theoretically, we extend the literature by investigating the strategic role of CIOs in remediating ITCW. Practically, we find that common practices by firms to retain CIOs in ITCW situations are ineffective for ITCW remediation. Firms are encouraged to reconsider these practices. Collapse

Abstract: With the proliferation of “big data” and powerful analytical techniques, information systems (IS) researchers are increasingly engaged in what we label as big data research (BDR)—research based on large digital trace datasets and computationally intensive methods. The number of such research papers has been growing rapidly in the top IS journals during the last decade, with roughly 16% of papers in 2018 employing this approach. In this editorial, we propose five conjectures that articulate the potential consequences of increasing BDR prevalence for the IS field’s research goals and outputs. We discuss ways in which IS researchers may be able to better leverage big data and new analysis techniques to conduct more impactful research. Our intent with these conjectures and analyses is to stimulate debate in the IS community. Indeed, we need a productive discussion about how emerging new research methods, digital trace data, and the development of indigenous theory relate to and can support one another. Collapse

Abstract: The aim of this research-in-progress is to evaluate the relation among information Technology (IT) ambidexterity, organizational agility, and information management capability (IMC) into informational flow at Energy and Development Regional Cooperative from Litoral Norte (COOPERNORTE) in Brazil. COOPERNORTE is a non-profit organization that buys electric energy and distributes to almost six thousand associates in the countryside of Viamão county. This organization provides energy to populations not attended by commercial organizations. The cooperative is investing in new IT resources and solutions to improve service delivery. However, some processes still require existing IT resources to keep working, for instance, the electrical network repair and maintenance process. The organization's challenge is to manage information of these processes, exploring new IT resources and current solutions to improve agility on energy restoration. This research applies a diagnostic case study from new relations in the IS literature. This preliminary step will subsidize future interventionist research. Collapse

Abstract: While organizations get prepared for digitalization, so must their IT departments. This means they have to increase their agility to respond to varying requests from different groups of users, increase infrastructure flexibility, and improve the utilization of the current resources. To answer these needs, traditional approaches and modes of IT management are often insufficient. We consequently propose a process model for public sector IT departments so that they can adjust their operations as a response to digitalization efforts, for example, smart cities and digital transformation. Our focus is especially on improving the IT development process within the organization, i.e., how the IT department can better respond to the needs of business units. Our findings show that the adjustments require changes both in management and daily operations. Moreover, changes should not be done only internally within the IT department, but also the whole organization should be involved. Collapse

Abstract: Organizational agility is a significant business capability. Though there have been numerous studies about the effects of information technology (IT) capabilities on organizational agility, there has been limited attention on the enabling effects of IT ambidexterity, namely, the dual capacity to explore and exploit IT resources and practices. We propose that IT ambidexterity enhances organizational agility by facilitating operational ambidexterity, and that the magnitude of facilitation depends on the level of environmental dynamism. We test these relationships utilizing data from a large-scale, matched-pair field survey of business and IT executives. The results confirm that a firm’s IT ambidexterity does enhance its organizational agility through the mediated effects of operational ambidexterity, and that the dynamism of a firm’s environment affects these relationships. Abstract: We have developed an IT governance disclosure framework to examine how firms communicate their IT governance activities. Using this framework for a sample of 200 commercial banking firms, our empirical assessment indicates that differences in the level of disclosure are systematically related to differences in institutional settings. We also find that firms with relatively good corporate governance practices consider IT performance measurement matters to be highly important when informing and communicating with shareholders. Paradoxically, however, modular management can also stifle the strategic potential of such capabilities by conflicting with the horizontal integration of units. We address these issues through an examination of how modular management of information technology (IT), project teams and front-line personnel in concert with knowledge management (KM) interventions influence the creation and development of dynamic capabilities at a large Asia-based call center. Our findings suggest that a full capitalization of the efficiencies created by modularity may be closely linked to the strategic sense making abilities of senior managers to assess the long-term business value of the dominant designs available in the market. Drawing on our analysis we build a modular management-KM-dynamic capabilities model, which highlights the evolution of three different levels of dynamic capabilities and also suggests an inherent complementarity between modular and integrated approaches.
