Understanding critical risks of business process outsourcing from the vendor perspective: A dyadic comparison Delphi study

Abstract: Business process outsourcing (BPO) enables organizations to enhance operational capability, shorten response time, and gain strategic value. Yet, BPO risks are real and BPO initiatives can and do go awry. While prior research has attempted to understand BPO risks from the client perspective, the critical risks of BPO from the vendor perspective (and how they differ from those of the client perspective) are not well understood. By using the Delphi method, this study identifies and ranks BPO risk factors from the perspective of vendors as well as clients (for comparison purposes) across two countries. We identify a list of 68 BPO risk factors perceived by vendors and clients and top-ranked risk factors perceived by vendors. We categorize these factors into six risk dimensions (i.e., organizational environment, client, complexity, contract, execution, and vendor). Our findings indicate that vendors are concerned about not only the risks that influence their own business, but also those that may impact the business of clients. However, vendors focus more on client and execution risks, whereas clients focus more on vendor and organizational environment risks. Our research contributes to the existing literature by not only investigating the top-ranked risks from the perspective of vendors, but also revealing the similarities and differences in the perceptions of vendors and clients with respect to BPO risk. Abstract: In the last decade, a diverse array of information systems (IS) has emerged to help organisations achieve their performance goals. As a result, global spending on information technology (IT) has increased manifold. These developments have reopened the fundamental question of how IS success is shaped at the organisational level. Scholars and practitioners would also like to understand if, compared to the individual level, IS success patterns differ at the organisational level. The last meta-analysis of IS success was conducted nearly a decade ago and it could not examine IS success at the organisational level. There is also a need to gain a deeper understanding of key contingencies influencing success at the organisational level. Based on a comprehensive meta-analysis of research studies conducted in the last decade, we not only report how IS success patterns are shaped at the organisational level but also show how these patterns compare to success configurations at the individual level. Additionally, we conduct detailed multi-level meta-analyses of system complexity and user type as two key contingencies influencing success at both individual as well as organisational levels. Findings of our moderation analyses reveal distinct constructions of IS success across both levels. Collapse

Abstract: This conceptual article contains a proposed four-part categorization of crowdsolving platform features: contest, idea, participant, and community. A related conceptual framework depicts the relationships of these features with the outcomes of creating, transferring, and assimilating knowledge for the platform and its client firms, according to the socialization, externalization, combination, and internalization (SECI) model. Arguments based in Social Capital Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Organizational Knowledge Creation Theory inform the predictions about the spiral of interactions between explicit and tacit knowledge that occurs during a contest on a crowdsolving platform. The findings suggest ways to design a crowdsolving ba (shared space for creativity) and platform-level absorptive capacity. Abstract: Based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM), this study identifies the differences between perceived privacy risks and privacy concern. Furthermore, the study analyses how perceived privacy risks and privacy concerns affect the disclosure intention and the actual information disclosure behavior of Internet users. In addition, the study discusses the moderating effects of platform types, from the perspective of privacy elaboration likelihood. By applying meta-analyses and SEM on 104 independent studies with 42,256 samples from existing empirical studies, we attempt to systematically reveal the relationship between privacy cognition and information disclosure. The results show that perceived privacy risks can significantly reduce personal information disclosure intention, as well as actual information disclosure behavior. However, privacy concerns only affect disclosure intention, but do not have a significant effect on actual information disclosure behavior. The study also verified that platform types have moderating effects on the privacy decision making of Internet users. The findings yield important and useful implications, both for research and for practice. Collapse

Abstract: Big data in healthcare has drawn substantial attention in recent years. Current researches on big data in healthcare are highly interdisciplinary involving methodologies from engineering, computing, behavior science, information science, social science, management science, as well as many different areas in medicine and public health. However, the identification of major hot topics and related research methodologies in big data in healthcare still lacks a comprehensive quantitative analysis. To provide a better understanding of the hot topics and methodologies in big data in healthcare and their future trends, a systematic and comprehensive literature search of the published research papers from past 20 years in big data research of healthcare was conducted and the resulting 321 literature papers were reviewed and analyzed. Overall, we identified three major topics comprising of omics, medical specialties and IT healthcare, with 13 subtopics. Abstract: Within developed economies, the field of m-payment appears to be driven by (disruptive) technological innovations. M-payments, similar to e-payments, have been regulated in such a way that banks and other established financial institutions have been able to maintain an unchallenged position in the payment ecosystem. However, disruptive technologies like Near Field Communication, but more importantly cloud technology based solutions might lead to dramatic changes. In the long run this may change the position of banks in the payment ecosystem including their control over “money flows”. Yet, for this to happen m-payment solution and service providers need to understand the role of money and payment instruments as well as how payment ecosystems work, in-depth. In this conceptual paper we discuss how the ecosystem of m-payment is expected to change due to technology changes. Based on platform and ecosystems concepts, theories of money and behavioral theories a comprehensive literature review and a qualitative meta-analyses of the m-payment literature is presented. On the basis of the theory review and literature analysis we expect that the role of Over The Top (OTT) providers in the m-payment ecosystems will be driven by cloud-based solutions and threaten the position of traditional players. We systematically review online banking adoption literature to propose two research models of factors affecting pre-adoption and post-adoption of the online banking. To test our proposed models, we applied a two-stage random-effects meta-analytic structural equation modeling method to data collected from 25,265 cases from primary empirical studies of online banking adoption. Our findings show that ten factors affect consumers’ adoption of the online banking. Furthermore, we show that the relative importance of these factors differs depending on consumers’ pre-adoption and post-adoption of the online banking. Collapse

In order to ensure a sound research foundation, there is a need for assessing the quality of existing success reports. Abstract: The effective sharing of organizational knowledge is particularly relevant for multinational corporations, where firm-specific tacit knowledge (know-how) is considered a source of competitive advantage for subsidiaries participating in a global strategy. To that end, multinational corporations (MNCs) are asking their IT departments to support both the exploitation of existing knowledge and the unit-to-unit transfer of new know-how derived in units from exploration. Nonetheless, new know-how derived from exploratory research, development and experience in one unit can be difficult to transfer to units that can exploit that know-how to commercial ends. The factors that impede the transfer of new know-how have been conceptualized as “factors of stickiness”. In this paper, we present a theoretical model of organizational factors that can cause (or conversely mitigate) stickiness in the flow of new know-how between MNC units. To test the six hypotheses of the model, we used meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) of 31 empirical studies, representing 10,432 cases of new know-how transfer between units. The result of MASEM shows that the factors of receiving units’ potential absorptive capacity and transmission channel in form of social capital that is enacted through its three dimensions (i.e., embedded social ties between units, institutional shared vision of units, and interorganizational trust of units) affect recipient subsidiaries’ capability to exploit new know-how in practice (i.e., realized absorptive capacity), thus effectuating its transfer. Based on our findings, we propose research directions within the context of agile information systems development, distributed software projects, and management of information systems functions in MNCs.
