Abstract: Research on artificial intelligence technology has not only increased rapidly over recent years, it is also no longer limited to the technical disciplines from which it originates. AI technologies are also at the center of social and sociotechnical studies including those conducted in information systems. Through a scoping review we explore how the research on different kinds of AI technologies has progressed over the past decade. Particularly, we explore whether the research on AI technologies has been informed by and informs our sociotechnical understanding of phenomena related to their design, development and implementation. For this purpose, we develop an analytical framework that differentiates sociotechnical perspectives, categorizes AI technologies into different kinds, and distinguishes research on AI technology design, development, and implementation. The findings from our review point to several directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Long-term collaborations are crucial in many creative domains. Although there is ample research on why people collaborate, our knowledge about what drives some collaborations to persist and others to decay is still emerging. In this paper, we extend theory on third-party effects and collaborative persistence to study this question. We specifically consider the role that a third party’s helpful behavior plays in shaping tie durability. We propose that when third parties facilitate helpfulness among their group, the collaboration is stronger, and it persists even in the third’s absence. In contrast, collaborations with third parties that are nonhelpful are unstable and dissolve in their absence. We use a unique data set comprising scientific collaborations among pairs of research immunologists who lost a third coauthor to unexpected death. Using this quasi-random loss as a source of exogenous variation, we separately identify the effect of third parties’ traditional role as an active agent of collaborative stability and the enduring effect of their helpful behavior—as measured by acknowledgments—on the persistence of the remaining authors’ collaboration. We find support for our hypotheses and find evidence that one mechanism driving our effect is that helpful thirds make their coauthors more helpful. Collapse

Abstract: To paraphrase the late Jerry Garcia, "it's been a minute," and that certainly dates me as to my generation, eh? I started my journey in 2007 with SIGMIS and its publication, The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems, and that is now over 15 years ago. I had grand aspirations for the journal at the time: at top, to get our review process online (we did that in the first year of my first term by joining Editorial Manager) and secondly, to get us included in the ISI Journal Citation Reports survey for production of a Journal Impact Factor (that took the rest of the first editorial term). Abstract: Extant literature has increased our understanding of specific aspects of digital transformation, however we lack a comprehensive portrait of its nature and implications. Through a review of 282 works, we inductively build a framework of digital transformation articulated across eight building blocks. Our framework foregrounds digital transformation as a process where digital technologies create disruptions triggering strategic responses from organizations that seek to alter their value creation paths while managing the structural changes and organizational barriers that affect the positive and negative outcomes of this process. Building on this framework, we elaborate a research agenda that proposes [1] examining the role of dynamic capabilities, and [2] accounting for ethical issues as important avenues for future strategic IS research on digital transformation. Abstract: This paper investigates the performance of the Information Systems (IS) discipline as reflected in the scholarly impact of the three IS journals that are included in the Financial Times’ top 50 journals (FT50), the four IS journals in the top tiers of the Chartered Association of Business Schools’ Academic Journal Guide (CABS AJG), and the eight journals that comprise the Association for Information Systems (AIS) Senior Scholars' Basket of Journals (AIS Basket). Journal lists, when framed as a form of ‘strategic signaling’, are used to by institutions to communicate values and priorities to scholars. Through strategic signaling, journal lists are performative and have the potential to shape and constrain research activity. Given the strategic and performative role of journal lists, it is important that the journals that constitute those lists have substantial impact. To measure the scholarly impact of journals we propose a new measure, the HMJ index, which comprises an equally-weighted combination of journal H-index, median citations per article, and Journal Impact Factor (JIF). Using the HMJ index, the results show that all eight AIS Basket journals are performing at a level that is commensurate with the other journals that make up the FT50. The results further show substantial differences between the FT50 journals, such as the number of articles published per annum. Implications for IS scholars, IS groups, and the IS discipline are identified, together with recommendations for action. Collapse

Abstract: Twenty-five years ago, in 1992, a journal named Group Decision and Negotiation was established in association with the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences with the vision of promoting theoretical and empirical research, real-world applications and case studies on group decision and negotiation processes. To celebrate its 25 years of continuous and outstanding contributions, this study aims to develop a bibliometric analysis of the publications of the journal between 1992 and 2016. The Web of Science Core Collection database is used to identify the leading trends of the journal in terms of impacts, topics, authors, universities and countries. Moreover, it utilizes the visualization of similarities viewer software to analyze the bibliographic couplings, co-citations, citations, co-authorships and co-occurrences of keywords. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems (IS) is one of the most rapidly changing disciplines in the social science field, and it is currently facing a new academic shift. The prevailing concepts, such as big data and Internet of things (IoT), imply that there is a plethora of research opportunities for IS researchers. Since these opportunities lie mostly in conjunction with other disciplines closely related to IS, it is essential to identify the interaction between IS and those disciplines. A few studies using bibliometric analysis have been published regarding this topic. However, we have identified several limitations in them: (i) inclusion of only a small journal basket, (ii) focus on a very restricted area of discipline, and (iii) a methodological limitation that can lead to the failure to capture the authentic knowledge flow between IS and other disciplines. We attempt to extend previous studies by proposing a comprehensive analysis model with the largest journal basket and areas of disciplines. As a result of our analysis, a knowledge flow structure different from that of past research is identified. In addition, through the discussion on emerging reference disciplines, we discover new research opportunities into which IS researchers can delve. Collapse

Abstract: Is the IS discipline a single discipline that focuses on both behavioral (BIS) and technical (TIS) topics, or is it two disciplines split between these orientations? Current opinion emphasizes BIS and reinforces the notion that researchers practice research in disconnected silos as opposed to a relatively continuous web. Such silos do disservice to the diversity of scholarly interests, skew productivity expectations in favor of small subsets of journals that often exclude technical- and decision science-oriented journals, and run the risk of creating self-perpetuating journal groupings. Silos disadvantage IS researchers by making the discipline narrower in comparison to other business disciplines and contradict the nature of IS pedagogy that equally reflects technology and management. We applied social network and cross-citation analyses to a sample of 98 IS journals to examine the cohesiveness of IS and to understand the extent to which boundary-spanning journals maintain scholarly connections between the approaches. Distinguishing between weak and strong ties among journals, we found that a discipline that comprises both BIS and TIS journals is highly cohesive in terms of weaker ties and that many boundary-spanning journals are quite balanced in their citations to and from each orientation. However, we did not find that IS is uniformly cohesive. Even so, our findings imply that IS scholars with different interests can parse out distinct subsets of journals that are central to their interests. We demonstrate as much by examining the most central journals for three examples of IS scholars: those with a strongly behavioral approach, with sociotechnical interests, and with specialized interests, such as medical informatics.
