Abstract: The UN High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) is pursuing a social media strategy to inform people about displaced populations and refugee emergencies. It is actively engaging public figures to increase awareness through its prosocial communications and improve social informedness and support for policy changes in its services. We studied the Twitter communications of UNHCR social media champions and investigated their role as high-profile influencers. In this study, we offer a design science research and data analytics framework and propositions based on the social informedness theory we propose in this paper to assess communication about UNHCR's mission. Two variables-refugee-emergency and champion type-relate to the informedness of UNHCR champions' followers. Based on a Twitter sentiment and attitude corpus, we applied a five-step design science analytics framework involving machine learning and natural language processing to test how the emergency type and champion type impact social communication patterns. Positive and neutral sentiment dominated the tweets of the champions and their followers for most refugee-emergency types. High participation-intensity champions emphasized high-intensity emergencies with tweet patterns reflecting dominant positive or neutral sentiment and sharing/liking attitudes. However, we found that sports figures effects were limited in spreading UNHCR's message, despite their millions of followers. We demonstrate the power of data science for prosocial policy based on refugee crisis awareness and instantiate our methods and knowledge contributions in a research framework that derives knowledge, decisions, and actions from behavioral, design, and economics of information systems perspectives. Abstract: The concepts field and habitus are used widely and variably in institutional theory. The intellectual antecedents are found in the work of the French Sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu. This study presents a field-level analysis of pan-European policy on cross-border health information technology. Using field theory and institutional theory, we situate field as a multi-level concept which extends institutional and organizational levels of analysis. Empirical data is gathered from European policymakers, health professionals and patient advocacy groups on the diffusion of supra-national health information technology across European Member States. Findings reveal four scenarios depicting field tensions, as ideological and practical imperatives of supra-national health information technology policy mis-align with Member State health systems. This study has implications for policy-makers and other stakeholders, who seek to narrow the digital divide across health fields and sub-fields. Collapse

Abstract: Technology adoption is one of the most important research streams in the field of IS. However, it has largely been studied with endpoint models rather than process models. In this research, we attempt to develop a process model for technology adoption using fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) techniques. fMRI tech niques allow us to directly investigate the cognitive process of technology adoption instead of using mental representations such as perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. We measure the brain activities of 22 students from a major western US university while they are making the decision to download or not download apps using a novel temporal neural correlate analysis. The research finds that the download decision is a complex process that includes the visual regions of the brain, the anterior cingulate cortex, the middle temporal gyrus and many other regions. The practical implication is that there are many points of intervention to influence the download decision. In particular, the visual features of app presentation seem to be a very important consideration. Collapse

Abstract: Data clustering as an unsupervised method has been one of the main attention-grabbing techniques and a large class of tasks can be formulated by this method. Mixture models as a branch of clustering methods have been used in various fields of research such as computer vision and pattern recognition. To apply these models, we need to address some problems such as finding a proper distribution that properly fits data, defining model complexity and estimating the model parameters. In this paper, we apply scaled Dirichlet distribution to tackle the first challenge and propose a novel online variational method to mitigate the other two issues simultaneously. The effectiveness of the proposed work is evaluated by four challenging real applications, namely, text and image spam categorization, diabetes and hepatitis detection. Collapse

Abstract: Data crowdsourcing is the mobilization of large groups of contributors-often volunteers via the Internetto collect and/or analyze data. Research on data crowdsourcing often prioritizes the data consumer or project sponsor. Significant gaps remain in understanding how to address design issues from the perspective of data crowdsourcing contributors. A systematic literature review is an ideal method for identifying gaps in how researchers conceptualize contributions in data crowdsourcing. This project presents a protocol for such a systematic literature review of data crowdsourcing. We will use the protocol to guide a subsequent systematic literature review and the construction of a data-information-knowledgewisdom chart that identifies critical gaps and opportunities for research in data crowdsourcing systems. Abstract: Multitasking using information systems (IS) often results in a blurring between personal and work lives. Prior literature overwhelmingly points to negative effects of traditional multitasking. Surprisingly, research on IS multitasking is relatively scarce. To address this gap, we hypothesize and test a research model of IS multitasking. Contrary to prior research, we find that IS multitasking yields significant positive outcomes. Abstract: In this article, an evolutionary argument to explain how people comprehend graphs is put forth. A theory of evolutionary fit, which argues for the correspondence between information presentation and evolutionarily adaptive brain structures, is proposed. This is complementary to cognitive fit, which argues for a correspondence between task and information presentation. In two fMRI experiments, we test this theory by comparing brain activation during a graphic comprehension task using two different graph types: bubble graphs and three-dimensional surface graphs. In accordance with our hypotheses, we find that comprehension of three-dimensional surface graphs results in greater activation of the ventral stream and greater accuracy in graphical comprehension than bubble graphs. We argue that this is because the human visual system is evolutionarily adapted to the comprehension of three-dimensional surfaces. The implication is that choosing graphical representations that match what the brain is evolutionarily specialized to process can enhance graphic comprehension. Collapse

Abstract: Motivated by cloud computing market, we consider how a monopoly service provider with queue technology prices and allocates her limited perishable computing resource in a complex environment where a large volume of computing jobs that differ in various dimensions are scheduled and served in a multi-server queue system. We first establish a hyperfinite service model with no aggregate risk where queue behaves deterministically in the steady state which allows provider to accurately manage queue capacity. A profitmaximizing provider throttles the service at two levels. At the extensive margin, the service provider under supplies the market even if she has access to additional resource. At the intensive margin, she tranche her capacity and inflates interruption as to segment the market. We then propose an appealing auction mechanism in the cloud computing spot market to implement the profit-maximizing allocation where users find it a weakly dominant bidding strategy to bid optimal prices. Abstract: Based on the Field Theory, this study postulates that the cognitive processes involved in making decisions to share information on social media platforms could be dynamically affected by network features and the contextual environment. The field effect is exerted by the reach and richness of network features, which virtually form a psychological pressure on one’s perception of the sharing situation. A research model is developed, in which the effects of extrinsic and intrinsic motivators on information-sharing continuance are moderated by the network features of social media platforms. A global sample from content contributors in two major social media platform contexts, experience-socialization (ES) platforms (N=568) and intelligence-proliferation (IP) platforms (N=653), were collected through the participatory research method. By using partial least-square analysis, the moderating effects of network features on cognitive-sharing processes under the two contexts were confirmed. For contributors on ES platforms, network features negatively moderate community identification and perceived enjoyment toward information sharing. By contrast, for contributors on IP platforms, network features negatively moderate the effects of perceived usefulness and altruistic tendencies on their intention to share, but self-efficacy for sharing is positively induced. The conceptualization of network features and refined knowledge about the situational and contextual effects of social media platforms are useful for further studies on social behaviors and may ultimately benefit platform providers in their attempts to promote information-sharing continuance. Abstract: Most information systems (IS) adoption models fail to account for the contribution of individual adaptation to IS success and its outcomes, in the adoption or post-adoption phases. Drawing on Field theory (Lewin 1939) and on individual adaptation theorizing, we develop a model to examine the internal and external forces which determine individual positive and negative emotions as well as trying to innovate with information technology (IT), a post-adoptive behavior. We posit that those impacts are mediated by individual adaptation to IT. A quantitative, field survey has been conducted with more than 3400 users of the SAP Enterprise Resource Planning application (ERP), pertaining to 11 organizations. The design of the research as well as the expected contributions for research and practice are presented. Collapse
