Abstract: The information systems (IS) literature elaborates on how firms develop organizational agility based on organizational capabilities to sense and respond to rapidly changing environments. However, the underlying mechanism of how companies and their chief executive officers (CEOs) understand and implement digital technologies to foster organizational agility is lacking. The technological frame concept provides an impetus to explain the process by which CEOs' sensemaking of digital technologies influences organizational agility. Our paper draws on the individual-level perspective of the technological frame concept and proposes a mediating role of digital business capabilities, composed of digital strategy, digital integration, and digital control. Our quantitative research design is based on findings derived from 386 German CEOs and confirms that CEOs' technological frame influences organizational agility through digital business capabilities. Thereby, we expand the concept of the technological frame on the individual level and contribute to the IS literature by revealing the mechanism of how CEOs' sensemaking influences organizational agility. Abstract: The information systems research stream on dynamic capabilities (DCs) considers how technology impacts strategic management at the organizational level in the turbulent environment evoked by digital transformation. However, the underlying mechanisms of how organizations use technologies effectively to increase their competitive advantage through competitive actions is underexplored. This paper seeks to empirically investigate the impact of digital technology-enabled DCs on action speed and action volume, two indicators of competitive aggressiveness. Furthermore, we propose the mediating role of strategic renewal. Our PLS-SEM analysis based on survey data from 174 German business units indicates that digital technology-enabled DCs directly enhance strategic renewal, action speed, and action volume. We also detect a partial mediating effect of strategic renewal on the relationship between digital technology-enabled DCs and action volume. This study offers insights into the underlying mechanisms that may allow organizations to enhance their competitive aggressiveness through the application of digital technologies. Collapse

Abstract: While a significant amount of research has identified individual founder traits and perceptions that significantly affect startup trajectory, relatively little work has investigated the interactions between these variables. Specifically, while prior research has shown that psychological safety, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial bricolage skills are correlated with firm performance, the linkages between these variables is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between these variables leveraging data from 71 startup founders. Results suggest that team psychological safety and entrepreneurial self-efficacy can individually predict entrepreneurial bricolage, with the combination of the two yielding a stronger predictive relationship. Finally, findings suggest that psychological safety, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial bricolage are not correlated with firm performance, contradicting prior findings. Collapse

Abstract: Legitimacy theory describes how individuals evaluate an organization’s behavior, form propriety evaluations, and subsequently decide whether to publicly express their legitimacy judgments. These individual judgments are influenced by sources of collective validity, for example, from recognized authority or from peer endorsement. Whereas most research on this topic has focused on the effects of authority, we study the influence of peer endorsement on the public expression of legitimacy judgments. Additionally, we assess evaluators’ preparedness to expend cognitive effort, that is, their evaluative mode, as an important condition under which judgment expressions are made. We present a set of three vignette experiments and one field study, all situated in social media that are quickly becoming the dominant setting for the expression of legitimacy judgments. This research provides new evidence that peer endorsement stimulates evaluators to express their judgments, particularly for evaluators who expend limited cognitive effort. Additionally, we find that evaluators in the active and passive evaluative modes act differently when their propriety evaluations are based on instrumental, moral, or relational considerations. These findings extend current legitimacy theory about how peer endorsement functions as a source of validity and when individual evaluators decide to publicly express their legitimacy judgments. Abstract: Companies may face serious adverse consequences as a result of a data breach event. To repair the potential damage to relationships with stakeholders after data breaches, companies adopt a variety of response strategies. However, the effects of these response strategies on the behavior of stakeholders after a data breach are unclear; differences in response times may also affect these outcomes, depending on the notification laws that apply to each company. As part of a multimethod study, we first identified the adopted response strategies in Study 1 based on content analysis of the response letters issued by publicly traded U.S. companies (n = 204) following data breaches; these strategies include any combination of the following: corrective action, apology, and compensation. We also found that breached companies may remain silent and adopt a “no action” strategy. In Studies 2 and 3, we examined the effects of various response strategies and response times on the predominant stakeholders affected by data breaches: customers and investors. In Study 2, we focused on customers and present a moderated-moderated-mediation model based on the expectancy violation theory. To test this model, we designed a factorial survey with 15 different conditions (n = 811). In Study 3, we focused on investors and conducted an event study (n = 166) to examine their reactions to company responses to data breaches. The results indicate the presence of moderating effects of certain response strategies; surprisingly, we did not find compensation to be more effective than apology. The magnitude of the moderating effects of response strategies is contingent upon response time. We also found that the negative effects of data breaches disappear after six months. We interpret the results and provide implications for research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: The internet of things (IoT) is rapidly becoming one of the most popular emerging technologies in business and society. One of the major verticals that has recently begun to effectively use IoT technologies is the retail industry. Given the unprecedented opportunities IoT generates for brands and retailers, it is important to glean timely insights regarding the business value of IoT and understand whether the introduction of an IoT technology as an alternative purchase channel for consumers affects the sales of physical products. In this paper, using empirical data from a multinational online retailer that adopted an IoT technology that largely automates consumers’ purchases and a quasi-experimental framework, we study the effect of the introduction of IoT on product sales. Our analyses reveal a statistically and economically significant increase in sales as a result of adopting an IoT technology and demonstrate the business value of the IoT channel for retailers and brands. In addition, we conduct analyses of the IoT phenomenon to also delve into the effect heterogeneity and empirically validate the underlying mechanism by examining the impact of IoT for products in different price ranges, levels of substitutability, and product categories (e.g., search versus experience goods and hedonic versus utilitarian), drawing on mental accounting and automaticity theory. For instance, our analyses reveal that less expensive and more differentiated products as well as experience and utilitarian goods can accrue higher benefits leveraging more effectively novel IoT technologies. We validate the robustness of our findings using an extensive set of robustness checks and falsification tests. This is the first paper to study the impact of an IoT technology on product sales, drawing important theoretical and managerial implications and seeding new future research directions for devices and technologies largely automating the purchase process. Abstract: This paper explores how social psychological biases impede the social exchange relations of executives who ascend to high-status corporate leadership positions. We theorize that a combination of self-serving attribution biases among executives who gain status and egocentric biases of their prior benefactors cause a systematic difference in perceptions about the relative importance of that help to the beneficiary’s success. This leads to the perception among prior benefactors that the high-status executives have not adequately reciprocated their help. We then extend this argument to explain why perceptions of under-reciprocation are heightened when the high-status executive is a racial minority or a woman but reduced when the prior benefactor is a racial minority or a woman. The final element of our theoretical framework examines the social consequences of perceived under-reciprocation for corporate leaders. We suggest that the high-status leaders’ access to strategic help is reduced, and they may become the target of social undermining that can damage their broader reputation. The findings support our social psychological perspective on social exchange in corporate leadership, revealing how and why executives who have ascended to high-status positions not only may encounter difficulty obtaining assistance from fellow leaders but also may experience adverse reversals in their social exchange ties such that managers who previously aided them engage in socially harmful behavior toward them. Abstract: Effectuation theory has gained prominence in the field of new product development (NPD). For instance, research has previously shown that the highly uncertain NPD process may benefit from an effectual behavior. However, literature also notices that decision-making behavior (i.e., causation and effectuation) depends on the context. Despite the dramatical changes digital technologies bring to innovation processes and relationships, the interplay of managerial decision-making behaviors in a digital context has not been examined. Hence, we investigate the influence of causation and effectuation on the NPD departmental digital strategy with the purpose to build dynamic innovative capabilities (i.e., exploitative and explorative capabilities) -a driver of NPD success. To prove our hypotheses, we collected survey responses from NPD managers in 213 firms. Our partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analyses yield several findings. While digital strategy enables causal managers to build exploitative and explorative capabilities, it complements effectual managers in doing so. Collapse
