Abstract: In this paper, we present a web-based group decision support system for the Academic Term Preparation problem faced at a business school of a large Middle Eastern university. This multi-stage problem involves several stakeholders that need to coordinate for the course offerings, instructor assignments, and the preparation of the relevant timetables. This coordination is facilitated through a web application that implements all stages of the workflow. It further automates the timetabling task through an optimization module using a new multi-objective mixed integer programming model. The model is based on curriculum and student sectioning requirements; academic and administrative policies; and, the present capacity situation. The new system replaces a semi-automated spread sheet tool, resulting in improved quality of timetables, efficient workflow coordination, customized reporting, significantly reduced lead times, and eradication of human errors. Abstract: This study investigates the role of employees’ age in the perception of problems during enterprise systems (ES) adoption and use. The analysis of data gathered from Polish ES practitioners suggests that ability to perceive the broad impact of technology decreases with age. The findings also illustrate that younger employees recognize root problems among technical issues, while older practitioners focus on impediments associated with people and emphasize the role of competence and training as root causes. Abstract: In this paper, we point to the potential and implications of digital traces as novel data source in the study of contemporary activities and behaviors. We do this to raise awareness of IS researchers of such traces in increasingly complex sociomaterial practices. We develop a two-dimensional framework of data sources (subjective/objective and digitalized/non-digitalized) for analyzing a six-year literature survey comprised of five leading IS journals. The analysis positions current data sources employed within the framework, and sheds light on the under utilization of digitalized data sources. This disconcerting result suggests that IS researchers must pay more attention to the changing landscape of data sources. To motivate and guide fellow colleagues to establish the credibility and reliability of digital traces, we develop a future research agenda that covers both opportunities in theory generation and challenges in data collection. Abstract: In the current information society increased attention is being paid to enterprise architecture (EA) and accompanying techniques, models and frameworks. CHOOSE is an EA approach focused on and adapted to the characteristics and needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Though these techniques could offer significant benefits to SMEs, hardly any SME uses EA. The application and implementation of EA in general and the CHOOSE approach in particular, has proven to be a complex and challenging task. This paper describes the research-in-progress of the development of a software tool called EASE in support of the CHOOSE approach in order to maximize this disappointing rate of adoption. Furthermore, the software tool should guide the enterprise architect throughout the entire EA process and facilitate the implementation, management and maintenance of the resulting EA. A brief overview is given of the main features illustrating the added value of this research-in-progress. Finally, validation is achieved by means of multiple case studies. Collapse

Abstract: Building on the opinions of 164 enterprise system (ES) adopters from Poland, a transition economy, and using an ontology-based framework, this study revealed eight main classes of ES adoption benefits and compared them with prior taxonomies elaborated in developed economies. Findings suggested that the main ES adoption considerations characteristic of transition economies relate to an emphasis on informational benefits, a lack of strategic role of ES, and benefits resulting from imposed control over the company and employees. Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate physicians' compliance with recommendations for drug substitutes embedded within an electronic medical record, to assess factors affecting compliance, and to evaluate associated cost savings. An exploratory study of all physicians in all clinics operated by a large health maintenance organization (HMO) was conducted using a transparent computerized agent that collected 1.21 million prescriptions prescribed by 647 physicians. Compliance with HMO recommendations for substitute drugs reached a 70 percent rate. Substitute type, whether generic or therapeutic, was found to be the most significant factor affecting compliance, with physician workload and age second and third in effect magnitude, respectively. Compliance was found to be non-automatic and selective, following a thoughtful cognitive process. The HMO realized at least a 4 percent reduction in costs for prescribed drugs as a result of compliance with substitute recommendations. The results can be interpreted via the lens of Organizational Justice Theory, assuming that the broad compliance with generic substitutes was driven by perception of just procedures, whereas there was no such perception in the case of therapeutic substitutes. While more research is warranted for investigating the motivations driving physicians' compliance, we strongly feel that the results can be generalized to other HMOs and healthcare settings. Abstract: Trust plays an important role in many Information Systems (IS)-enabled situations. Most IS research employs trust as a measure of interpersonal or person-to-firm relations, such as trust in a Web vendor or a virtual team member. Although trust in other people is important, this article suggests that trust in the Information Technology (IT) itself also plays a role in shaping IT-related beliefs and behavior. To advance trust and technology research, this article presents a set of trust in technology construct definitions and measures. We also empirically examine these construct measures using tests of convergent, discriminant, and nomological validity. This study contributes to the literature by providing: (a) a framework that differentiates trust in technology from trust in people, (b) a theory-based set of definitions necessary for investigating different kinds of trust in technology, and (c) validated trust in technology measures useful to research and practice. Abstract: In this paper we report a case study examining the communication processes engaged in by virtual project teams and their management. Twenty-two teams, using widely available groupware to communicate, work together, share documents, discuss ideas, and solve problems, designed and implemented a database. These teams were managed by a geographically-distributed management team. The case study is analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, from two perspectives--working in, and managing, virtual teams--using a framework that integrates virtual team dynamics and project management practices. Through the critical examination of communication content from the longitudinal experiences of multiple virtual project teams and their virtual management team, we identify successful project practices and uncover underlying interaction processes. Specifically, we found that high performing project teams differed from low performing teams in terms of process management, relational development, and proactive technology use behaviors. The five-person management team paralleled the project teams in evolving its own process management and relational development over time. Collapse

Abstract: This paper examines the factors that influence the long-term sustainability of FLOSS projects. A model of project sustainability based on organizational ecology is developed and tested empirically. Data about activity and contribution patterns over the course of five years for 2,772 projects registered with SourceForge is analyzed. Our results suggest that the size of the project's development base, project age and the size of niche occupied by the project are positively related to the project's ability to attract user and/or developer resources. The ability to attract resources is an indicator of the perceived project legitimacy, which in turn is a strong predictor of the project's future sustainability. Thus a project's ability to attract developer and user resources is shown to play a mediating role between the demographic (size and age) and ecological (niche) characteristics of the project and its future sustainability. Our results support the applicability of tenets of organizational ecology related to the liability of smallness, the liability of newness, and population characteristics (niche size) to the FLOSS development environment. The implications of the results for future research and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: This paper presents a prototype decision support system for platelet production and blood mobile scheduling for a regional blood center. Unlike whole blood cells, platelets have a very short shelf life, which requires matching demand and supply closely. This is achieved by an efficient supply chain DSS that is optimized for delivery of platelets from production centers to transfusion centers, typically hospitals. One of the critical elements of the DSS is an embedded non-convex integer optimization model that assists the regional blood center manager to schedule the shuttle transportation of whole blood from collection sites to the regional processing center. The proposed non-convex integer model is transformed to a linear 0–1 problem using a two-step conversion process. The transformed model is successfully solved and the optimal solution is reached for the test data. An application of the integrated DSS using data from a regional blood center is described. The results suggest that the proposed DSS better meets the daily demand by producing a superior production plan and mobile assignment schedule. Collapse
