Abstract: In this paper, we propose an investigation of negative reviews and define the profile of negative influencers in Yelp. The methodology adopted to achieve this goal consists of two phases. The first one is theoretical and aims at defining a multi-dimensional social network based model of Yelp, three stereotypes of Yelp users, and a network based model to represent negative reviewers and their relationships. The second phase is experimental and consists in the definition of five hypotheses on negative reviews and reviewers in Yelp and their verification through an extensive data analysis campaign. This was performed on Yelp data represented by means of the models introduced during the first phase. Its most important result is the construction of the profile of negative influencers in Yelp. The main novelties of this paper are: (i) the definition of the two social network based models of Yelp and its users; (ii) the definition of three stereotypes of Yelp users and their characteristics; (iii) the construction of the profile of negative influencers in Yelp. Abstract: The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology expands the boundary of business practice, inducing the emergence and application of business intelligence (BI) that has promoted the transformation of information techniques to optimize business decision and operation. However, there is a lack of theoretical consensus and measurement of the technology embedded in BI at present. This study exploratively develops the SenseTransform-Drive (STD) conceptual model of BI based on dynamic capabilities theory and organizational evolutionary theory to explain the core BI capabilities. By using factoring analysis and structural equation modeling analysis, we extract the latent constructs and empirically verify the validity of the STD model and further examine the correlation and mode of interaction of the three core BI capabilities and the impact of BI application on firm performance in the real economy with a sample contextual to Chinese business practices. The study results show that there are direct and high-intensity cumulative positive effects among the structural components of the STD conceptual model and BI-related dynamic capabilities can enhance operating efficiency and firm performance. Abstract: This study contributes to the extant body of knowledge on smart cities and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for sustainable development. There still exists a research gap on how ICT enables sustainability initiatives, national innovation, industrial diversification, and smart cities development. We conduct an empirical investigation on national innovation initiatives and public-private partnerships in Macau, a special administrative region characterizing a high degree of local governance and institutional autonomy separate from the institutions of mainland China. The research-in-progress paper presents a framework within which the public and private organizations negotiate policies that influence the innovation process. Our study reveals the development of national research labs and tech entrepreneurship incubators. Our ongoing analysis not only uncovers the intermediary role of industry associations that facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation capacity building, they perform some functions of governance, to socialize, mobilize and share resources where existing government capacities are constrained. Abstract: The sales performance of online stores plays a critical role in the economy and has attracted increasing attention from scholars. This study focuses on different aspects of the visit behavior of online consumers and explores the dynamic relationships between visit behavior factors and the sales performance of online stores. We adopt comprehensive visit behavior measures, including number of visitors, repeat visits, visit duration, visitor bookmarking behavior, and visitor attributes, and examine whether these metrics are related to sales performance, what the dynamics of the observed relationships are, and which metric is the most important factor in these relationships. We adopt the vector autoregression model with exogenous variables to investigate the dynamic relationships of visit behavior variables with sales performance. We also assess the relative importance of different metrics in explaining sales performance. The findings reveal that visit behavior measures have a strong relationship with sales performance measures. Among the different metrics, the repeat visit metric has the significantly strongest relationship with sales performance, followed by the number of visitors. This study offers new insights for the visit behavior and sales performance literature as well as novel strategies for managers of online stores. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates how the disclosure of a security vulnerability index based on outgoing spams and phishing website hosting which may serve as an indicator of a firm’s inadequate security controls affects companies’ security protection strategy. Our core objective is to study whether firms improve their security when they become aware of their vulnerabilities and such information is publicized. To achieve this goal, we conduct a randomized field experiment on 1,262 firms in six Pan-Asian countries and regions. Among 631 treatment firms, we alert them of their security vulnerability index and ranking over time, and their relative performance compared to their peers via emails and a public advisory website. Compared with control firms without being informed of their security vulnerability index, treatment firms improve their security over time, with a significant reduction of outgoing spam volume. A marginally significant improvement in reducing phishing hosting websites is also observed among non-web hosting treatment firms. The security improvement may be attributed to firms’ proactive reaction to the public security vulnerability information. Our study provides cybersecurity policy makers with useful insights to motivate firms to adopt better security measures. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines how social media influence collective action in the context of digital activism. This is achieved by using the concept of media affordance as a theoretical lens and applying it to the collective purposes of network building and synthesis, as suggested by mobilization theory. Employing latent class logit regression, we tested the proposed hypotheses based on data from 384 digital activism events in 100 countries, classifying success in digital activism as either partial or complete success. The results show that when the purpose of digital activism is network building, media with greater affordances for promoting environmental shaping were positively related to the success of digital activism. Conversely, when the purpose of digital activism is synthesis, media with greater affordances for promoting contagion were positively related to the success of digital activism. Collapse

Abstract: This study develops a novel conceptual framework to understand the differential impact of formal institutional regime shift in intellectual property rights on the innovation and patenting strategies of Chinese and Western firms operating in China. We argue that to the extent that Chinese firms have been deeply embedded in China’s informal institutions, they are less responsive to formal institutional changes than Western firms operating in China. Using the major China patent law reform of 2001 as an exogenous event, we find results consistent with our key arguments: With the strengthening of the previously weak (utility model) patent protection, Chinese firms are less likely to apply for such patents to safeguard their innovations than Western firms. However, this difference becomes less pronounced in regions with higher quality intellectual property rights and legal institutions that foster research and development and innovation, and when Western firms gain longer operational experience in China. This study advances our understanding of the intricate interaction between formal and informal institutions and specifically how “stickiness” may arise in their substitutive relationship because of the embeddedness of firms in informal institutional environments. It also provides important implications for policy and innovation strategies for policy makers and firms in emerging economies. Collapse

Abstract: Based on the communicative ecology framework and theories related to guanxi and communication context in China, we investigate the moderating effects of individual preference for communication context (IPCC) on knowledge sharing via interactive systems (KSIS) behavior. Drawing on survey data from a hotel chain's employees, we explore how guanxi elements drive knowledge sharing (KS) behavior and enhance KS outcomes. Our data demonstrate that IPCC significantly moderates the effect that KSIS has on KS outcomes, but the IPCC has a direct and negative impact on KS outcomes. Abstract: A significant gap exists in our understanding of what explains the varying responses of multinational corporations (MNCs) to social issues in emerging markets. Arguably, in a setting where both market institutions and regulations and norms of corporate social responsibility are underdeveloped, it is more difficult for corporations to take actions beyond those that serve their immediate economic interests. Proposing a social movement perspective on MNCs’ responsiveness to social issues in emerging markets, we identify the mechanisms by which online activists grab firms’ attention and force them to become more socially responsive. A perception of organizational vulnerability and a home-country institutional logic that is consistent with the demands of the online campaign provide political opportunity structures that hasten the corporate response but affect the magnitude of firm response differently. We test our framework in the empirical context of corporate philanthropic action following the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan province in China, which triggered an online campaign that questioned MNCs’ donations to the disaster relief effort. Our study contributes to the literature on heterogeneous organizational responses to social movements, a better understanding of the antecedents for MNCs’ social responsiveness in emerging markets, and research on MNCs. Understanding the motivations behind members’ participation is essential for VC organizers. VC participation behavioral intention is a major factor to shape VC participation behavior and it is very important to investigate factors influencing VC behavioral intention. Using the Triandis model of interpersonal behavior, this paper investigated antecedents of behavioral intention to participate in VCs. The results showed that affect, social factors, and perceived consequences are effective in explaining the behavioral intention to participate in VCs.
