Abstract: The analysis of events with spatio-temporal context and their interdependencies is a crucial task in the manufacturing domain. In general, understanding this context, for example investigating error messages or alerts is important to take corrective actions. In the manufacturing domain, comprehending the relations of errors is often based on the technicians’ experience. Validation of cause-effect relations is necessary to understand if an effect has a preceding causality, e.g., if an error is the result of multiple issues from previous working steps. We present an approach to investigate spatio-temporal relations between such events. Based on a time-sensitive correlation measure, we provide multiple coordinated views to analyze and filter the data. In collaboration with an industry partner, we developed a visual analytics approach for error logs reported by machines that covers a multitude of analysis tasks. We present a case study based on real-world event logs of an assembly line with feedback from our industry partner’s domain experts. Furthermore, we discuss how our approach is applicable in other domains. Collapse

Abstract: Managing disaster response operations is a challenging task requiring the consideration of many stakeholders under time pressure, risk and uncertainty. Utilization of information technology for decision support might produce great benefits for decision makers to overcome such challenges. This study presents a decision support tool for allocating temporary-disaster-response facilities for relief supplies distribution under demand uncertainty, as one of the many challenging problems in disaster relief operations. The decision support tool developed in this study consists of three main components; database, decision engine and user interface. We also include an example real-life case for illustration and present the results produced by the decision support tool. It is noted that the decision support tool allows decision makers to allocate temporary-disaster-response facilities in many different after-disaster situations by taking into account the possible uncertainties to occur after a disaster by utilizing a two-stage-stochastic programming framework. Although it is illustrated with a specific example case in this paper, the flexibility of the decision support tool allows users to consider other cases with as many scenarios as desired. We think that it might be a useful tool to help decision makers in allocating temporary-disaster-response facilities for relief supplies distribution. Collapse

Abstract: Stakeholder quantification and prioritisation (SQP) is performed on the basis of the stakeholder's influence. The involvement of adequate stakeholders plays a crucial role in identifying and selecting the most essential requirements to produce a successful system. However, the current SQP techniques still face serious limitations, such as having insufficient low-level implementation details, being time-consuming, lacking an automation level, heavily relying on professional expertise and having no attribute measurement criteria (AMC) for stakeholder evaluation. These key issues serve as the motivation of the present study. Hence, this study is aimed at proposing a new semi-automated technique called StakeQP to address the reported key limitations. StakeQP introduces new low-level implementation details to perform SQP automatically on the basis of the newly proposed AMC using the multi-attribute decision-making method, namely, the technique of order preference similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS), to achieve an efficient StakeQP. The effectiveness of StakeQP is evaluated using a benchmark dataset of the actual software project. The findings show that StakeQP can produce more accurate results with less time consumption and is more effective in addressing the defined key limitations compared with other alternative techniques. Abstract: In this paper, we identify unique textual patterns from popular songs in iGeneration in which people feel comfortable with the Internet and mobile technology to make contact with friends and family through social media sites. To this end, we calibrate data-driven classifiers using terms and their frequencies in the lyrics of Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 songs between 1965 and 2015. We find that iGeneration shows several contrasting characteristics in terms of long lyrics and frequent emotional terms related to aspiration, selffocus, negation, and curse. Collapse

Abstract: Detecting changes of behaviors or events is crucial when updating existing knowledge in a dynamic business environment. Currently, data analysts can immediately collect data and easily access existing knowledge. However, that knowledge can also rapidly become outdated. This study discusses a form of knowledge, classifiable sequential patterns (CSPs), defined as s → c, where s is a temporal sequence; c is a class label; and “→” is a sign which implies the sequential relationships between s (cause) and c (effect). If the CSP evolves into another, and the new knowledge is not updated, decision-makers would continue to work with the obsolete CSP. To the authors' knowledge, no study has addressed the topic of change mining in CSPs. To address this research gap, this study proposes a novel change-mining model, SeqClassChange, to identify changes in CSPs. Abstract: In this paper, we first identify and formulate several Hollywood golden rules to specify relationships between certain characteristics of movies (e.g., budget size, release date, listed actors, and reviews) and revenue. Then we train well-known classifiers such as decision tree and neural network models to validate some of such golden rules and graphically present our findings. Our findings partially support several golden rules related to genre, WOM and sequel. We find that the more ratings a movie has, drama genre, or if the movie belongs to a collection show similar characteristics to movies that are have great budget recovery. Collapse

Abstract: Data sources (DSs) being integrated in a data warehouse frequently change their structures/schemas. As a consequence, in many cases, an already deployed ETL workflow stops its execution, yielding errors. Since in big companies the number of ETL workflows may reach dozens of thousands and since structural changes of DSs are frequent, an automatic repair of an ETL workflow after such changes is of high practical importance. In our approach, we developed a framework, called E-ETL, for handling the evolution of an ETL layer. In the framework, an ETL workflow is semi-automatically or automatically (depending on a case) repaired as the result of structural changes in DSs, so that it works with the changed DSs. E-ETL supports two different repair methods, namely: (1) user defined rules, (2) and Case-Based Reasoning. In this paper, we present how Case-Based Reasoning may be applied to repairing ETL workflows. In particular, we contribute an algorithm for selecting the most suitable case for a given ETL evolution problem. The algorithm applies a technique for reducing cases in order to make them more universal and capable of solving more problems. The algorithm has been implemented in prototype E-ETL and evaluated experimentally. The obtained results are also discussed in this paper. Collapse

Abstract: Energy is a scarce commodity. Diffusion of responsibility, forgetfulness, lack of knowledge and motivation are reasons for families’ electricity waste. GreenCrowd is a smartphone application and IoT system to help families to decrease their electricity consumption. GreenCrowd incorporates educational, motivational and supportive features. The IoT device (smart LED lamp) reports previous consumption with a comparison to each family baseline. The smart LED lamp works as a notification tool that targets all house members. The current study presents preliminary results for electricity reduction during an intervention experiment. Abstract: Log management and log auditing have become increasingly crucial for enterprises in this era of information and technology explosion. The log analysis technique is useful for discovering possible problems in business processes and preventing illegal-intrusion attempts and data-tampering attacks. Because of the complexity of the dynamically changing environment, auditing a tremendous number of data is a challenging issue. We provide a real-time audit mechanism to improve the aforementioned problems in log auditing. This mechanism was developed based on the Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) compression technique to facilitate effective compression and provide reliable auditing log entries. The mechanism can be used to predict unusual activities when compressing the log data according to pre-defined auditing rules. Auditors using real-time and continuous monitoring can perceive instantly the most likely anomalies or exceptions that could cause problems. We also designed a user interface that allows auditors to define the various compression and audit parameters, using real log cases in the experiment to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this proposed audit mechanism. In summary, this mechanism changes the log access method and improves the efficiency of log analysis. This mechanism greatly simplifies auditing so that auditors must only trace the sources and causes of the problems related to the detected anomalies. This greatly reduces the processing time of analytical audit procedures and the manual checking time, and improves the log audit efficiency. Collapse
