Abstract: Referral reward programs (RRPs) are a cost-effective means for companies to acquire new customers, and they have therefore been adopted by diverse businesses. This research investigates how the reward–product congruity of nonmonetary rewards influences consumers' recommendation intention in online RRPs. Specifically, drawing on the theories of congruity fit and schema congruity, we propose that nonmonetary rewards with moderate congruity trigger consumers' recommendation intention in RRPs more than those with high and low congruity. Moreover, this inverted U-shaped relationship is moderated by factors that influence the individual cognitive state (i.e., need for cognition and utilitarian versus hedonic products). An experiment with a 3 (reward–product congruity: high/moderate/low) × 2 (product type: utilitarian app/hedonic app) mixed factorial design was conducted to test our hypotheses. The results largely support our propositions. First, we find an inverted Ushaped relationship between reward–product congruity and recommendation intention and a mediated effect of reward attractiveness. Furthermore, need for cognition moderates the effects of reward–product congruity on recommendation intention, and there is a three-way interaction effect among product type, need for cognition, and reward–product congruity. Abstract: ID cards, public transport tickets, and diplomas are examples of credentials that society has established as a means to provide trustworthy information to others. In the digital world, the emergence of self-sovereign identity as a new paradigm for the management of digital credentials aims to narrow the conceptual gap between digital and physical credentials. The ongoing digital transformation in the public sector requires dealing with a large variety of credentials in different forms systematically. However, there is still currently no generic conceptual model of credentials in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. We employ design science research to develop a unified meta-model on credentials, their use, and their governance. Our results contribute to research through an empirically grounded conceptualization of credentials and provide practitioners with a common basis to capture, analyze, and design the handling of credentials in real-world scenarios. Abstract: Despite energy efficiency measures, global energy demand has gradually increased due to global economic growth and changes in consumer behavior. Even if people are aware of the problem and want to change their energy consumption, they have difficulty acting on their attitudes. This is called the attitude-behavior gap. To narrow this gap and reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, behavioral interventions beyond techno­ logical advances must be considered. A promising intervention is nudging, which uses insights from behavioral economics to gently nudge individuals toward more sustainable choices. In this study, we investigate how modifying digital choice architectures with nudges can be used to influence consumer energy conservation behavior in smart home applications (SHAs). We conducted an online experiment with 391 participants to test the effectiveness of the following three digital nudges in an SHA: self-commitment, reminder, and social norm nudge. While the results of a structural equation model indicated no effect on bridging the gap between attitude and behavior, we found the potential to promote energy conservation with two nudge types. Thus, this paper makes substantial contribution to persuasive and information systems-enabled sustainability for a better world in the form of digital nudges for emerging technologies. Collapse

Abstract: Software components, such as application programming interfaces (APIs), provided by both the platform owner and external developers in a platform ecosystem are vital to online digital platforms. These APIs are associated with functionality provided by the platform. A larger number of APIs used is generally associated with an increase in the platform ecosystem’s variety of products. However, the precise nature of the relationship between the use of APIs and product variety in a platform ecosystem is not yet known because of the lack of appropriate methodologies to analyze the complex data generated in such platform ecosystems. Drawing on a recombinatorial design perspective, we use a dynamic network model to create metrics for product variety in a digital ecosystem and study how the use of different types of APIs affects product variety. In particular, we theorize that, contrary to existing models, the structure of APIs in a large platform ecosystem is not limited to a core–periphery structure, but includes an additional third layer that we refer to as the regular core. We further hypothesize that external APIs in the regular core play a crucial role in increasing product variety in the ecosystem. To test our hypothesis, we conduct an empirical study using longitudinal data of all available digital product (i.e., plug-in) source codes on WordPress.org, the world’s largest content management system and one of the most extensive digital platform ecosystems. By analyzing all of the plug-ins on WordPress over 10 years from its inception, we find the support of our three-layer structure of APIs in a platform ecosystem: complete core, regular core, and periphery. Our empirical analysis further supports the role of external APIs in the regular core in increasing product variety. Abstract: As technology is evolving, there is a rise in the use of AI systems. The increased use of AI systems has revealed issues of gender and racial biases. To address these issues, explainable AI (XAI) is introduced, but the use of XAI has triggered various kinds of biases leading to issues such as overreliance. In this study, we seek to devise interventions to mitigate the issue of overreliance on AI by better understanding cognitive biases and acknowledging that different users have different cognitive abilities, and we need to be mindful of that when we design XAI systems. We will conduct multiple experiments using the recidivism dataset collected by ProPublica and to develop a better understanding of and solutions to mitigate the issue of overreliance. The findings from this research will allow us to design XAI systems better, improving user trust in AI and further improving AI adoption. Collapse

Abstract: The current paper revisits and builds upon task demonstrability, which defines the criteria necessary for groups to choose a correct response if any member prefers that response. We identify boundary conditions of the current conceptualization of task demonstrability with respect to its use in understanding modern organizational teams. Specifically, we argue that, in its current form, task demonstrability is not optimally suited to studying ongoing teams in which member expertise varies and teams work to complete complex multifaceted tasks. To address this issue, we provide a revisited perspective on demonstrability. We specify the nomological network of revisited demonstrability and recast each of its criteria in a form that preserves the original intent of the construct, but has broader applicability, particularly to organizational contexts. We then discuss theoretical implications and managerial applications of the construct. Finally, noting that there is no standard assessment tool for demonstrability (original or revisited), we develop and validate a measure to facilitate future research. Collapse

Abstract: Can mobile payment platforms (MPPs) elevate Sub-Saharan Africa’s (SSA) healthcare service quality (HSQ)? In a region home to more than one billion people yet beset by a paucity of services and infrastructure, mobile devices and platforms are rapidly gaining ground. Rising healthcare needs and costs along with the fact that more than 60% of SSA lives in areas nearly 1.5 miles away from paved roads that lead to hospitals and banks, accessibility to traditional financial services remains a serious concern. As Sub-Saharan hospitals increase billing access via mobile payment platforms, there is little understanding of whether and how mobile payment platforms influence healthcare service quality (HSQ).Drawing upon economic utility and trust perspectives, this study develops an integrative model to examine mobile payment platform utility’s impact on patient trust, commitment, and HSQ perceptions. The model is empirically tested using a survey of 527 patients from the West African country of Nigeria. Results reveal a distinct amalgam of MPP utility, trust, and commitment as antecedents to HSQ perceptions, thus generating important insights and contributing to the ongoing inquiry of how digital platforms in developing countries can influence socio-economic development. Overall, the results support the study’s hypotheses and underscore the important role of MPPs. Collapse

Abstract: Digital nudges are used to guide users' attention and behavior in different phases of the customer journey. This paper focuses on the application of digital nudges in the pre-purchase phase of customer journeys by analyzing the potential effect of a social norm nudge on information consumption intentions. The study further aims to explore the extent that social media usage prior to a specific task may strengthen or weaken the nudging effect. An experiment was conducted asking participants (n = 209) to imagine planning their summer vacation and inform themselves about travelling during the Covid pandemic. The results show that while age significantly affected the intention to consume information, neither the social norm nudge nor prior social media usage appeared to be effective in the chosen context. Abstract: We live in a world that is full of digital payment solutions. However, most of these payment technologies are still facing resistance due to various factors such as transaction's monetary cost, perceived complexity, perceived privacy and security risk, etc. In this study, we propose and evaluate a novel model that takes the total perceived transaction cost of mobile payment into consideration. This model draws from both the transaction cost theory (TCE) and the expectation confirmation theory (ECT). The results indicate that asset specificity has a positive relationship to the total perceive transaction cost of mobile payment. Users' cost expectations are impacted negatively by the total perceived transaction cost. Finally, users who perceive mobile payment to be affordable seem to have higher intentions to use mobile payment. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed. Collapse
