Abstract: Despite their astounding growth in recent years, online gig platforms face key challenges to increase gig workers' working commitment. This study aims to examine the impact of a fundamental organizational design element payout frequency, which refers to the intervals at which workers access the funds they have earned. Drawing on expectancy theory, we argue that a higher payout frequency enhances both the quantity and quality of gig work. To investigate this, we analyze proprietary data from a quasi-natural experiment that involved an unexpected reduction in the payout cycle for gig workers in a specific geographic region. By employing propensity score matching and a difference-in-differences approach, we demonstrate that a shorter payout cycle led to an increase in the effort among the impacted gig workers and also resulted in improved work quality. These findings contribute to our understanding of effectively motivating and managing gig workers, ultimately influencing customer engagement on platforms. Collapse

Abstract: The growing social media use worldwide has encouraged researchers to research on how and why it is adopted. However, the majority of studies have focused on the individual rather than the organizational level. There is also a relative paucity of research on organizational level factors that affect the use of social media applications by non-profit organizations (NPOs). Hence, this study aims to bridge this gap in research by analyzing the factors that determine social media use, which leads to increasing the effectiveness (i.e., awareness, community engagement, and fundraising) of NPOs. The data were collected through questionnaires distributed to public relations practitioners in 325 NPOs in Jordan and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The re­ sults supported the vital role of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, social in­ fluence, and management commitment on the actual usage of social media. The results also showed that using social media has a significant positive effect on awareness and community engagement, while no significant impact is reported regarding fundraising. Theoretically, this study extends the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) by incorporating new factors, namely management commitment, awareness, com­ munity engagement, and fundraising, and proposing new relationships in the model. Practically, this research provides implications for stakeholders of NPOs, including policymakers and public relations practitioners. Collapse

Abstract: ICT-induced legal and regulatory challenges, including security and privacy risks, are on the rise. Despite that, there is a dearth of research emphasizing the role of ICT laws and understanding its effect on the level of ICT diffusion and the well-being of a country. Drawing on Dror’s law and social change framework, and grounding the discussion on the literature on ICT diffusion, the perspective of perceived risk, Hofstede’s typology of national culture, and the technological determinism theory, this study (1) explores the effect of maturity of ICT laws in a country on ICT diffusion among its citizens and businesses; (2) understands how this relationship is contingent on the national cultural dimensions; and (3) explicates the role of ICT diffusion in promoting the well-being. The research model is examined using publicly available data from 83 countries, and the findings suggest that sound ICT laws are necessary for achieving a greater diffusion of ICTs and improving well-being. Abstract: To provide insight into women’s approaches to managing the work-family interface, I introduce the concepts of focal and peripheral role senders and illuminate the importance of their interplay in the enactment of women’s domestic roles. At the core of my theoretical model is the process by which focal and peripheral role senders embrace or reject an ideal enactment of domestic roles and the women’s strategies women use to either acquiesce to ideal roles or acquire idiosyncratic roles. This paper examines the husband as the focal role sender, consistent with the literature’s focus and the pervasiveness of husbands in my data, and considers peripheral role senders, such as parents and in-laws, who also influence women’s role enactment, either by amplifying or muting the husband’s preferred role enactment. This research contributes to existing theory by introducing the importance of focal and peripheral role senders, illuminating how these multiple senders and their interaction influence women’s strategies to deal with role conflict, and documenting how women’s strategies subsequently influence their career trajectories. Abstract: The role of e-government in combating corruption is an active area of research in Information Systems (IS). Drawing on the value framework for assessing e-government impact, and grounding our discussion on three theoretical perspectives, namely, (1) technological determinism theory, (2) general deterrence theory, and (3) Habermas’ public sphere perspective, we seek to explore how the diffusion of virtual social networks (VSNs) influences the relationships among e-government maturity, government administrative effectiveness, and cor­ ruption in a country. Our analyses based on publicly available archival data substantiate the (1) indirect re­ lationships between e-government maturity in a country and corruption in three branches of its government (i.e., legislature, executive, and judiciary) through government administrative effectiveness, (2) interaction effect of VSN diffusion on the relationship between e-government maturity in a country and its government adminis­ trative effectiveness, and (3) interaction effects of VSN diffusion on the relationships between government administrative effectiveness in a country and its corruption dimensions. The key contributions of this research include the establishment of the (1) role of e-government in combating corruption in three branches of the government, and (2) idea of the public sphere in the context of VSN diffusion, and the subsequent exploration of its effects on e-government outcomes of a country. Abstract: Disinformation through social media has emerged as a new form of cyberweapon for countries to advance their strategic interests. However, there is a conspicuous dearth of studies that looked into the possible impacts of foreign disinformation attacks in a country. Drawing on the media dependency theory, we seek to explore the relationships among the foreign disinformation through social media, societal polarization, government’s cybersecurity capability, and the rule of law in a country. A quantitative analysis based on publicly available archival data substantiates our research model. The key contributions of this research include (1) adapting the media dependency theory to the context of social media in investigating the phenomenon of disinformation; (2) establishing that foreign disinformation through social media increases societal polarization, and reduces the rule of law in a country; and (3) establishing the vital role of government in mitigating the information operations from hostile foreign entities. Abstract: This research-in-progress paper presents preliminary findings from a 2019 explorative ethnographic field study of a Norwegian platform as a service. The platform enables organizations to integrate data from their different data systems and siloes in a cloud-based hub, which returns meaningful and valuable data combinations that provide organizations with several innovative takes. This study contributes to the information systems (IS) literature on digital business models and digital transformation by presenting in-depth empirical insights into potential barriers for organizations to realize the f ull potential of the data that organizations have at hand. Some key barriers are revealed to be closely related to IT managers' ownership and control of data and data systems, as well as resistance to new and different ways of thinking of data; power aspects from external data systems' suppliers (e.g., SAP); and skepticism by organizations toward a product the organizations do not own, among others. Key characteristics of those who realize the opportunities that reside in their organization's data and are a key asset to their business include risk-taking persons with a nose for business observing the strategic opportunities that digital data has for their business models. Abstract: This study presents a framework that would benefit professionals in implementing meaningful Gamification concepts within project management tools. This study was pioneered and it paves a foundation for any continuing endeavor to study Gamification. In particular, two major contributions are made. First, utilitarian aspect was introduced and combined with entertainment aspect into Gamification by analyzing large-scale online SMAs' reviews. Additionally, six factors of Gamification were discovered and were validated in the context of project management tools. Since this model is developed based on a well-established method from personality psychology and adopted revised lexical approach on a large scale of data, it is expected to motivate a new wave and new perspective of research in Gamification. Abstract: Technology plays an important role in enabling women to become successful entrepreneurs and mobile money is no exception. According to the GSMA 2017 report, the gender gap in mobile money usage in the Middle East and North Africa is 81% and 19.5% in Sub-Saharan Africa (GSMA, 2017). The main aim of this study is to investigate the adoption, and use of mobile money, as a tool for empowering women owned/ managed businesses seeking to attain sustainable entrepreneurship in a developing world context. Using four case illustrations in Africa broadly defined to include sub-Saharan Africa (i.e. SSA; notably Nigeria and Kenya), and North Africa (Egypt and Morocco) with similar social and economic challenges three objectives drive the study. The first is to analyze the role of mobile money in empowering women entrepreneurs to reach sustainable development in a cross-national context – notably Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Morocco. The second is to analyze the factors that can affect women entrepreneurs’ adoption and use of mobile money in these African contexts. The third, and final objectives is to highlight areas of policy interventions and implications for sustainable entrepreneurship mediated by the adoption and use of mobile money. Collapse
