Quality is more important than quantity: Social presence and workplace ergonomics control predict perceived remote work performance

Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has caused a widespread disruption to the way that we work. One of its lasting consequences will be the ubiquity of remote work. The effective use of collaboration tools is therefore a critical factor for information systems (IS) research when design the workplaces of the future. We theorize that social presence and workplace ergonomics control are important predictors of perceived performance. Moreover, we investigate how different factors (i.e., collaboration tool efficacy, mode of work, and number of meetings) influence social presence. Using survey data (N = 389), we provide evidence that workplace ergonomics control and social presence are indeed important for perceived performance. Surprisingly, we observe that only collaborative platform efficacy has a significant impact on social presence, and that neither the number of meetings nor the modality were significant factors. Based upon these results, we derive implications for theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Social media plays an important part in the digital transformation of businesses. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the use of social media by business-to-business (B2B) companies. The current study focuses on the number of aspects of social media such as the effect of social media, social media tools, social media use, adoption of social media use and its barriers, social media strategies, and measuring the effectiveness of use of social media. This research provides a valuable synthesis of the relevant literature on social media in B2B context by analysing, performing weight analysis and discussing the key findings from existing research on social media. Abstract: When IT work is performed through digital labor markets, IT professionals have a high degree of personal responsibility for their careers and must use appropriate strategies to be successful. This paper investigates the success of IT freelancers on digital labor platforms. Drawing on signaling theory, a dataset of 7166 IT freelancers is used to examine how activating, pointing, and supporting signals lead to success. Analysis was carried out using negative binomial regression. The results indicate that the three signaling types positively influence the objective career success of IT freelancers. This paper contributes to the literature by testing signaling theory in the new context of digital labor platforms, investigating IT specifics, and proposing support as a new type of signal for IT professionals on digital labor platforms. In practice, the results provide guidelines for IT freelancers to improve their success within their careers. Collapse

Abstract: Companies have increasingly adopted environmental management systems (EMSs) in response to the need for improving their environmental sustainability and accountability. EMSs enable companies managing their environmental activities, supposedly leading to improved environmental performance and cost savings. However, research findings regarding the effectiveness of EMSs on key environmental and financial performance measures are inconclusive. To address this puzzle, we collected data from various sources to analyze the relationships between EMS certification, environmental performance, and financial performance for the STOXX 600 using panel data regression covering six years. With this comprehensive, large-scale approach, we account for largely neglected indirect effects and widespread validity issues of prior research, such as cross-sectional designs, perception-based performance measures, and small sample sizes. Our results show that EMS certification has a significant positive effect on environmental performance, particularly on emission reduction. We did not find a significant effect of EMS certification and environmental performance on financial performance. Collapse

Abstract: The literature proves that the implementation of Accounting Information Systems (AIS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) positively affects their performance. As to the systems offered in cloud computing, the previous research mainly focused on the benefits of choosing such a solution, eliminating many barriers in SMEs in the case of traditional onpremise solutions. In Poland, studies into Cloud-based AIS or Cloud ERP have not been previously described in scientific research. This article presents the results of an empirical study of 35 Polish SMEs running their accounts. The thematic scope went beyond the issues examined so far and included the dominant data processing models, types of AIS systems, the use of AIS to perform accounting functions, and the integration of functional areas with the accounting system. The main results indicate that in the surveyed SMEs: 1) cloud computing (CC) is the dominant model of data processing, 2) slightly more companies use stand-alone AIS than integrated ERP systems, 3) AIS is not used to perform all important accounting functions, and 4) most often the accounting system is integrated with the purchasing and sales system and the fixed assets system, and less frequently with the payroll and production service systems. Abstract: When reading an online review, consumers rely on implied trust-building factors within it. Trust antecedents have been extensively researched and categorized into argument quality and source credibility. However, there is still a need to investigate how their help for consumers differs across national cultures. Furthermore, while a profile photo has been found to enhance the helpfulness of a review by improving source credibility, little is known about how consumers perceive user appearance in a review picture and no research has compared these two types of visual information. To bridge these gaps, we examine how trust antecedents and visual information help consumers’ decision making differently across national cultures, using reviews collected from Amazon in the US and Germany, respectively. Our results show that information quality is more helpful for consumers in an individualistic and low uncertainty avoidance culture, whereas source credibility is more valued in the opposite culture. Interestingly, the effects of the two types of visual information, user appearance in a profile photo versus in a review picture, also differ across cultures. This research contributes to the online review literature by introducing visual information and national culture with new perspectives of trust. Our findings suggest that multinational e-commerce businesses adopt culture-specific strategies in review systems to better help consumers make informed purchase decisions. Collapse

Abstract: Current literature highlights the importance of understanding intergenerational tensions that arise in the context of implementation of ICT for independent and healthy ageing. The current study aims to explore tensions between value-based objectives emphasized by seniors and younger adults in the context of ICT for independent and healthy ageing in Poland and Sweden. Value-based objectives were identified by applying the value-focused thinking approach. By comparing the identified objectives between young adults and seniors, we found several significant tensions, both in Poland and Sweden. In particular, we found that young adults might perceive seniors as a fragile and passive group, which clashes with how seniors perceive themselves. Abstract: This research analyzes the Pro-innovation Behavior Profile of government organizations in Poland from the perspective of e-government managers during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Poland, a post-transformation economy. We adopted the Pro-innovation Behavioral Profile of Organization Questionnaire from Barbosa et al. (2018) for data collection via a random online survey of 61 e-government managers. They worked at certification organizations representing the Certification Authority -providing e-services, verifying entities' identities (websites, email addresses, companies, or individuals), and binding them to cryptographic keys by issuing electronic digital certificates. E-government managers perceive their organization as supporting creativity, structure, and environmental factors that lead to innovation. Although leaders motivate proinnovation behavior in employees, the organization's culture could be more innovative. The main contribution of our study is the first adaptation and use of the PIB questionnaire to collect data from egovernment managers in Poland, a post-transformation economy. The results can support e-government managers and political leaders in shaping the Pro-innovation Behavioral Profile of government organizations. Collapse
