Abstract: Digital distraction by smartphones may not only have negative effects in in the workplace but is also linked to problematic everyday behaviours such as physical movements, cognition and social interaction. While current research has made important steps towards understanding influencing factors of problematic smartphone use and their respective consequences, we still lack a holistic understanding of how different types of users react differently to smartphone-induced distractions and how they cope with them. To address this gap, we conducted a Q study among a representative sample of professionals and developed a typology. Our results suggest four types: bystanders, addicts, moderates and struggling integrators. Interestingly, our findings point to remarkable similarities. Users are in a state of constant distraction. Constantly checking and blurring boundaries between work and private sphere seem to be the norm these days, and users are even fully aware of their excessive smartphone use. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic forced sociotechnical systems (STS) to highly integrate remote work. Large-scale analyses show that the positivity of tweets about work from home decreased until COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the WHO and re-increased in the weeks that followed. Nevertheless, it is unclear if this reaction is due to personal and organizational developments or if it mirrors the realignment of entire STS. The present study uses Q methodology to identify differences in how STS realign to the externally enforced integration of remote work. Only STS that reach a state of high alignment to remote work conditions by successfully shifting communication and procedures to digital spheres can be considered resilient. The results show that employees describe their personal experiences with remote work as more positive the higher their level of sociotechnical realignment. Furthermore, personal digital resilience is correlated to successful STS realignment as well. The results confirm the importance of realigning not only the technical and social components of STS but above all their sociotechnical interaction. Negative sentiments relate in particular to the low realization of humanistic objectives in STS. Collapse

Abstract: As small- to medium-sized enterprises struggle with IT management, an increasing number appoint Fractional CIOs, i.e., CIOs that work part-time for multiple organizations simultaneously. We use Q-methodology to empirically evaluate the relative importance of factors for Fractional CIO engagement success and find that trust, top management team support, and the Fractional CIO’s integrity are most important. Further, we identify three groups of Fractional CIOs: Strategic IT Advisors, Full-ownership CIOs, and Change Agents. Our results guide organizations when hiring and working with Fractional CIOs and provide the basis for further research on Fractional CIO archetypes. Collapse

Abstract: Though digital technology adoption among SMEs is widely studied, a manifestation of digitalization – virtual integration, particularly its strategic benefits for SMEs – remains largely understudied. Virtual integration con­ nects and coalesces the interfaces of digitalization in SMEs. Though the need for externally oriented digitalization in SMEs is widely desired and espoused, virtual integration and the ensuing effect on Dynamic Strategic Planning (DSP) could be key factors in realizing higher performance. Using the information theory lens and knowledgebased view and a two-study empirical setup based on data from manufacturing and services firms, we draw on the Competence–Capability–Performance (CCP) framework. Specifically, we test a model of digitalization circuitry operational through the mediating effects of virtual integration and dynamic strategic planning (DSP). The ensuing interweaving effects of digitalization from virtual integration are manifest in DSP through fluid partnering, business continuity planning, and market acuity. We find that digitalization, manifested in the form of virtual integration, cascades through DSP to improve financial performance. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the enthusiasm for engaging in interorganizational collaboration to enable digital product innovation, firms often face challenges in integrating knowledge across organizational boundaries. Our research examines how collaborating firms use Interorganizational Systems (IOS) tools and project coordinators to overcome knowledge boundaries in different types of ideation tasks. Drawing on boundary-spanning theory, we concep­ tualize IOS tools as boundary objects, project coordinators as boundary spanners, and the interdependence of ideation tasks as moderators of the impacts of boundary objects and spanners on knowledge integration. Our findings suggest that IOS tools help overcome syntax and semantic knowledge boundaries by transferring and sharing information when the interdependence of idea implementation tasks is high, and project coordinators help overcome pragmatic knowledge boundaries by building reciprocity of innovation participants when the interdependence of idea generation tasks is high. Our research contributes to value co-creation literature by developing a boundary-spanning mechanism to explain the roles of boundary objects and boundary spanners in overcoming different knowledge boundaries to enable digital product innovation at the inter-firm level. Abstract: While algorithmic management generates several benefits for platform companies, it emanates several issues for workers, which they perceive as threats triggering different forms of resistance behaviors. Although recent studies identify these issues and resistance behaviors, the perspective of the actual subject of resistance, i.e., the gig worker or group of gig workers with resistant behaviors, is yet not well understood. By adopting a Q-methodology mixed-method approach this study tries to identify resistance types of gig workers, explore their characteristics and similarities, and therefore give a voice to the subject of resistance. Based on 21 threats and 14 resistance behaviors, identified in a literature review, we develop a Q-set containing 35 statements, which will be used for data collection with the goal of revealing the richness of the resistance phenomenon in the context of work in the gig economy. Abstract: Building a digital resilience (i.e., capabilities to design, deploy and use information systems (IS) to adjust to changes caused by external shocks) may prepare individuals, organizations and other institutions for future disruptions caused by global crises. To be able to monitor the emergence and development of digital resilience, one needs to be able to measure it. Currently, there is no consensus in IS literature on how to conceptualize or operationalize resilience. By conducting a systematic literature review, we identify traditional and innovative operationalization approaches. We find scale-based quantitative methods to be most prominent, followed by qualitative analyses of resilience indicators through interviews and case studies. We identify advantages and limitations of each approach and encourage authors to move beyond the boundaries of traditional methods and incorporate innovative approaches – some of which we present in this paper – to operationalize digital resilience in a tailored, context-specific way. Abstract: Though innovation is considered to be the lifeblood of business, speed of innovation is more critical than innovation itself. IT plays a critical role in the process of open innovation as it is based upon collaborating with suppliers and customers. IT enables increased collaboration and generation of insights across the firm’s partner network. We examine the role of IT-enabled capabilities in determining the speed of innovation. We hypothesize that collaboration with customers is more effective than collaboration with suppliers for firms to speedily innovate. Further, a firm’s digital collaboration with customers is more effective when Business Intelligence systems are used. Econometric analyses of data from 249 U.S. firms yields strong support for our hypotheses. While both customer-side and supplierside digital collaboration are positively associated with innovation speed, the effect of customer-side digital collaboration on innovation speed is stronger. Furthermore, Business Intelligence systems use amplifies the effect of customer-side digital collaboration. Collapse

Abstract: A centralised open innovation search approach refers to setting up a dedicated and specialised sourcing unit to search external sources for knowledge, while a decentralised open innovation search approach refers to empowering employees in various functional units to search external sources for knowledge during their routine research and development work. This research examines the operational alignment of the open innovation search approach with information technology (IT) use given that open innovation search can be significantly enhanced by IT. We theorise that organisations that have a high extent of employing a centralised (decentralised) open innovation approach and a high IT use intensity for external (internal) information flows are likely to have a high extent of exploratory (exploitative) innovation. We further posit that harnessing exploratory and exploitative innovation can lead to organisational innovation performance. This theory was validated through a field survey involving 186 organisations. The findings from this study advance the IT and open innovation literature by gaining an understanding of the interplay among different open innovation search approaches and IT use, and the resulting variances in innovation performance in terms of new product sales and patents. Abstract: Building on the resource orchestration view, we proposed a dual role of information technology (IT) in the form of IT-enabled resource acquisition (IRA) and IT-enabled resource operation (IRO) in determining innovation performance. Through analyzing the survey data from 235 organizations, we found that in a dynamic business environment, IRA assists organizations in accruing benefits from their open innovation (OI) strategies. In a less dynamic business environment, IRO enhances the impact of OI strategies on innovation performance, whereas IRA diminishes such an impact. Post-hoc interviews reveal further insights into how organizations utilize ITs (IRA and IRO) to obtain innovation benefits. Collapse
