Abstract: This article contributes to the discussion on the governance dynamics of platform ecosystems. We take a broad perspective to understand how the environment beyond the platform ecosystem (i.e., external conditions) shapes the actions of the platform and its various actors in reinforcing platform boundaries. Prior work explored how external influences, such as societal norms and national and local regulations, influence platform ecosystems, including external competitive pressures. But studies on the broader set of potential influences from external conditions are lacking; in particular, a study of such conditions and their influence across platforms in light of boundary reinforcement is called for. Boundary reinforcement is critical for the identity and legitimacy of a platform and for longer-term platform sustenance. Using a fuzzy-set qualitative configurational analysis (fsQCA) method with input coded from 271 peer-reviewed research articles covering 29 platforms, we offer a model detailing how external conditions influence a platform's boundary reinforcement actions. Abstract: The current digitalization is a disruptive, challenging process that causes a social-technical transition in organizations. Due to that, there are more and more use cases in companies. Action research as a form of social research combines theoretical knowledge and practical execution, which is why it is suitable for current challenges. In several cycles, a literature analysis is carried out to build the knowledge base and establish hypotheses. Based on this, an action is then performed, which is subsequently analyzed, whereupon the knowledge base is expanded through literature. Since action research has not been used much in information systems so far, it is important to identify the reasons for the low use of action research in the research area of information systems. In this paper a systematic literature review was used to identify the barriers that explain the low use of action research in information systems. The findings are twelve different barriers, which are classified into three categories. The categories are "Human Factors", "Method Factors" and "Application Factors". In addition, the research paper concludes with specific implications for these three categories. Collapse

Abstract: Reimbursement in medical care implies significant administrative effort for medical staff. To bill the treatments or services provided, diagnosis and treatment codes must be assigned to patient records using standardized healthcare classification systems, which is a time-consuming and error-prone task. In contrast to ICD diagnosis codes used in most countries for inpatient care reimbursement, outpatient medical care often involves different reimbursement schemes. Following the Action Design Research methodology, we developed an NLP-based machine learning artifact in close collaboration with a general practitioner's office in Germany, leveraging a dataset of over 5,600 patients with more than 63,000 billing codes. For the code prediction of most problematic treatments as well as a complete code prediction task, we achieved F1-scores of 93.60 % and 78.22 %, respectively. Throughout three iterations, we derived five meta requirements leading to three design principles for an automated coding system to support the reimbursement of outpatient medical care. Collapse

Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to examine the factors that are critical to create business value from business analytics (BA). Therefore, we conduct a meta-analysis of 125 firm-level studies spanning ten years of research from across 26 countries. We found evidence that the social factors of BA, such as human resources, management capabilities, and organizational culture show a greater impact on business value, whereas technical aspects play a minor role in enhancing firm performance. Through these findings, we contribute to the ongoing debate concerning BA business value by synthesizing and validating the findings of the body of knowledge. Collapse

Abstract: Knowing what factors drive wearable technology adoption can help companies succeed in the competitive market of wearables. In this study, we conduct a meta-analysis on the relationships of technology acceptance of wearable technology based on the extant corpus (142 effect sizes from 44 samples collected in 11 countries). The results confirm the basic expectation that the core constructs of technology acceptance models as well as reveal that perceived enjoyment and usefulness are the most important to the adoption of wearables. However, more interestingly, a granular analysis of moderating effects shows that cultural factors including uncertainty avoidance, future orientation and humane orientation can significantly moderate the relationships between different determinants and wearable adoption. In addition, compared with other types of smart wearables, the users of smartwatches would place more weight on perceived selfexpressiveness. These findings offer insights for future wearables-related research and also have practical implications for designing and developing successful wearable products. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted children’s learning routines from schools to their own homes, necessitating learning support solutions. This paper reports on a design science research project that combines augmented reality with a conversational agent to assist schoolchildren in learning complex subjects by providing verbal descriptions and interactive animations. Drawing on the theoretical foundations of multimedia learning, we derive three design principles to resolve seven issues associated with distance learning. The instantiated artifact augments text-based learning resources and facilitates learning in a contextsensitive manner through multimodal output. The proof-of-concept evaluation with 11 experienced teachers and researchers in the field of didactics confirms the usefulness of these design principles and suggests refinements of the artifact. Abstract: Fraud, particularly cybercrime, is an emerging worldwide risk. Despite this, the risk of fraud appears underestimated in discussions of fraud mitigation and risk management in the context of SMEs. This multivocal literature review discusses ways of minimizing fraud for SMEs and IT-supported concepts that are currently proposed in literature. The present review shows that existing concepts often focus on specific or internal fraud risks and organizational countermeasures, but rarely cover newer fraud risks or suggest IT-supported measures to reduce the risk of fraud for SMEs. However, some IT security approaches have been proposed to mitigate fraud, but the area of internal control concepts of compliance and governance appears unconnected to IS approaches. This review identifies a lack of integrated fraud-management concepts, which is surprising due to the omnipresence of ICT, it found limitations in existing concepts and suggests areas for future IS research and academic discussion. Abstract: Mobile health (mHealth) applications have become an important tool to support public health, especially in times of increased health awareness in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is still uncertainty about what factors determine successful mHealth services from the users’ perspective. Based on the results of a systematic literature review, a qualitative content analysis of available apps and semi-structured user and expert interviews, we derive a structural model with antecedents on user attitudes towards mHealth and user satis­ faction with the mHealth application. These variables determine users’ intention to continue using the appli­ cation and their intention to recommend it to others. For verification, we tested the model with a sample of 249 German mHealth users from the “MyFitnessPal” community using structural equation modelling and found that all derived path relations have significant coefficients. Abstract: Business process modeling plays a fundamental role in organizations that are restructuring their processes to meet the challenges of increasing digitalization and globalization. However, the geographic distribution of process stakeholders, the abstract non-contextual modeling languages, and the resulting low motivation to participate make process modeling difficult. In this paper, we present a design science research approach that resolves these problems using virtual reality. Based on empirical evidence, we first developed design principles to increase employee engagement. Subsequently, a virtual reality application was generated, that enables the placing of process models in realistic and immersive working environments. We developed the application continuously in four evaluation cycles and finally tested it in terms of usefulness in three field studies. The results of this study contribute to more context awareness in business process management and provide design knowledge for future industrial virtual reality applications. Collapse

Abstract: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) offer great potential for business applications because they enable real-time object recognition. However, their training requires structured data. Crowdsourcing constitutes a popular approach to obtain large databases of manually-labeled images. Yet, the process of labeling objects is a time-consuming and cost-intensive task. In this context, augmented reality provides promising solutions by allowing an end-to-end process of capturing objects, directly labeling them and immediately embedding the data in training processes. Consequently, this paper deals with the development of an object labeling application for crowdsourcing communities following the design science research paradigm. Based on seven issues and twelve corresponding meta-requirements, we developed an AR-based prototype and evaluated it in two evaluation cycles. The evaluation results reveal that the prototype facilitates the process of object detection, labeling and training of CNNs even for inexperienced participants. Thus, our prototype can help crowdsourcing communities to render labeling tasks more efficient. Collapse
