Digital transformation and European small and medium enterprises (SMEs): A comparative study using digital economy and society index data

Abstract: Digital transformation is profoundly transforming SMEs’ business activities, bringing about comparative ad­ vantages and associated risks. Previous studies on digital transformation and SMEs focus on technology adoption, innovation, new value creation, and dynamic capabilities. However, it is unclear how digital technology affects SMEs’ specific business activities. We study SMEs’ customer access, increasing competition, external funding or access to finance, rising input costs, skilled labor shortages, exogenous shocks, global crises, and regulatory is­ sues. This study aims to fill the literature gap by exploring the impact of digital technology, using digital economy and society index (DESI) as proxies for the SME issues. We use DESI and SME data from a survey on European enterprises’ access to finance. We find that digital transformation strengthens SMEs’ ability and flexibility to address main business issues. Furthermore, findings reveal that digitally transformed SMEs have fewer concerns about access to new and traditional customers, competition changes, access to finance, increasing input costs, external shocks, and regulatory changes. However, digital transformation also brings risks, such as the shortage of skilled labor and experienced managers and loss of inherent competitiveness. The novelty of our work lies in supplying quantitative knowledge on the link between digital transformation and European SMEs’ critical business concerns. These findings substantially increase our understanding of the impact of digital change on European SMEs’ business activities. Collapse

Abstract: Business information systems support a large variety of business processes and tasks, yet organizations rarely understand how users interact with these systems. User Behavior Mining aims to address this by applying process mining techniques to UI logs, i.e., detailed records of interactions with a system's user interface. Insights gained from this type of data hold great potential for usability engineering and task automation, but the complexity of UI logs can make them challenging to analyze. In this paper, we explore trace clustering as a means to structure UI logs and reduce this complexity. In particular, we apply different trace clustering approaches to a real-life UI log and show that the cluster-level process models reveal useful information about user behavior. At the same time, we find configurations in which trace clustering fails to generate satisfactory partitions. Our results also demonstrate that recently proposed representation learning techniques for process traces can be effectively employed in a realistic setting. Collapse

Abstract: Agriculture is one of these sectors where Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to make a major impact. Yet, its adoption in the sector falls behind the expectations. This paper presents an extensive review of 1355 publications over the last decade, with an aim to highlight the state-of-the-art of research on IoT in agriculture and investigate its slow adoption. The literature review reveals that the "big three" barriers for the overall sector are cost, skills, and standardization, while the lack of connectivity and data governance are two key reasons why most of the proposed IoT solutions are standalone systems of limited scope and the majority of commercial IoT efforts focuses on practices under protected indoor environment. Lastly, the analysis of past research along the five layers of IoT system architecture reveals limited attention on barriers and solutions at the business layer, which represents a research opportunity for information systems scholars. Abstract: Unplanned readmission entails unnecessary risks for patients and avoidable waste of medical resources, especially intensive care unit (ICU) readmissions, which increases likelihood of length of stay and more severely mortality. Identifying patients who are likely to suffer unplanned ICU readmission can benefit both patients and hospitals. Readmission is typically predicted by statistical features extracted from completed ICU stays. The development of predictive process monitoring (PPM) technique aims to learn from complete traces and predict the outcome of ongoing ones. In this paper, we adopt PPM to view ICU stay from electronic health record (EHR) as a continuous process trace to enable us to discover clinical and also process features to predict likelihood of readmission. Using events logs extracted from MIMIC-IV database, the results show that our approach can achieve up to 65% accuracy during the early stage of each ICU stay and demonstrate the feasibility of applying PPM to unplanned ICU readmission prediction. Abstract: An important ambiguity in the sharing economy literature concerns the role of product variety. Do physical product characteristics provide scope for differentiation in a sharing economy context, and if so, under which circumstances? Resolving this ambiguity is important as it can have large operational and strategic implications for sharing economy businesses. We use discrete choice modeling on a unique carsharing dataset and behavioral online experiments to study how users select between product options of varying quality and brand in a shared consumption context. We find that, in general, there is a trend towards utilitarian access-based consumption in which product characteristics and product brand matter less. However, we observe that hedonistic use cases tend to shift preferences significantly toward more premium products. Our results highlight the need for a more nuanced consideration of product differentiation in sharing economy research. Collapse

Abstract: The study analyzes the digital divide across 29 European countries using data from Eurostat in the context of EU policy to promote digital transformation in e-commerce and e-government. Using multivariate statistical methods, findings show continuing digital performance asymmetries with countries clustered into three groupings: leaders, followers, and laggards. As access to information and communications technology increases among Europe's citizens, the drive towards digital transformation will only be achieved by increasing patterns of use through the development of fit-for-purpose digital platforms, websites, and applications. Abstract: The development of science and technology (ST) should respond to the needs of today's world, which is unfortunately heading towards a climate catastrophe. Many people do indeed use ST to protect the environment. However, for many, technological progress, economic growth is prioritized over environmental concerns. The presented study tracks the mutual relation of these attitudes. Log-linear analysis was conducted using secondary data obtained from the World Values Survey. The study sample includes all European countries that participated in the survey and Canada, China, Turkey, United States of America. The research considers four types of attitudes: Synergy of attitudes, Green attitudes, Red attitudes and Rejection of attitudes. The results explain the relationship between classification into a particular type of attitudes and variables such as gender, age, education level. The study is addressed to practitioners, policy-makers, educators interested in better understanding the needs of future participants in educational activities for environment protection. Collapse

Abstract: Born globals, recently established firms that obtain a substantial share of their revenue from foreign markets, can help strengthen countries’ economic vitality and increase innovation levels. The extent of born global formation varies considerably across countries, yet it is unclear why this is the case. Drawing on the neoconfigurational institutional perspective, we develop a typology of institutional contexts associated with high born global formation rates. We posit that high rates of born global formation occur where institutional features favorable to border-spanning activities complement institutional features conducive to entrepreneurial activity, thus forming an institutional configuration that enables, equips, and motivates more societal members to launch born globals. Accordingly, we hypothesize a primary institutional configuration where international transaction facilitators, entrepreneurial educational capital, and entrepreneurial norms combine to propel born global formation. Further, we draw on the internationalization literature to propose two alternative types of institutional configurations conducive to born global formation. These two types provide functional substitutes for the primary type and are distinctly propelled by (1) escapism from low-quality public governance institutions or (2) immigrant entrepreneurship. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis on data from 66 countries supports our typology and illustrates why born global activity may thrive even in contexts with institutional weaknesses. Our study develops a neoconfigurational model to advance a holistic understanding of the born global phenomenon’s theoretical drivers, contributing to research on comparative capitalism and international entrepreneurship. Abstract: Many individuals encounter algorithmic decision-making agents with algorithm aversionthe irrational discounting of superior algorithmic advice. So far, we know little about how algorithm adoption develops over time and how people may overcome algorithm aversion. In response, we explore the factors that foster the adoption of algorithmic decision-making agentsinitially and over time.Based on an experiment with incentive-compatible awards over several rounds, we find that one's knowledge about peers successfully using the technology as well as low transaction costs serve as strong initial motivators to foster initial algorithm adoption. Further, by revealing that adoption rates increase and initial difference in adoption rates become smaller over time, we find evidence that despite the technology's particularities, algorithm aversion seems to have a temporary effect only. Abstract: Process mining (PM) is an emerging trend across many industries. To exploit its potential of increased transparency and organizational efficiency, PM needs to be implemented successfully. Due to its specific characteristics, knowledge on the implementation of other information systems cannot be transferred seamlessly. Applying an action design research (ADR) approach in a mixed team with the PM provider Celonis, we develop a training solution to facilitate PM implementation from a thirdparty implementa tion partner's perspective. Therefore, we first formulate the problem by investigating challenges in the implementation process. Next, we derive a training concept as an artifact, using the theoretical founda tion of IT implementation models. We evaluate the artifact, reflect on, and formalize the learning. The paper contributes to the PM knowledge base by identifying 38 implementation challenges like quantifying the value of PM and transferring those insights into practice by developing a prototype solution.
