Abstract: Crowdfunding project creators usually launch referral programs to increase the user base. While there is a growing literature on crowdfunding, evidence on the role of referrals and its impact across crowdfunding projects is still inadequate. Leveraging data from a reward-based crowdfunding platform, we first investigate how referrals impact the project’s fundraising performance and post-fundraising satisfaction. Then we explore whether and how a focal project’s referrals influence related projects’ fundraising performance. We find that both volume of shared and successful referrals positively impacts the project’s fundraising success. The volume of successful referrals rather than the previously adopted shared referrals is positively associated with the percentage of positive reviews a project receives, serving as an efficient signal of project quality. Lastly, we uncover positive spillovers among projects posted by the same creator, and observe cannibalization for projects launched by different creators and within the same category. Collapse

Abstract: We model the diffusion of IT outsourcing using announcements about IT outsourcing deals. We estimate a lognormal diffusion curve to test whether IT outsourcing follows a pure diffusion process or there are contagion effects involved. The methodology permits us to study the consequences of outsourcing events, especially mega-deals with IT contract amounts that exceed US$1billion. Mega-deals act, we theorize, as precipitating events that create a strong basis for contagion effects and are likely to affect decision-making by other firms in an industry. Then, we evaluate the role of different communication channels in the diffusion process of IT outsourcing by testing for the fit of the mixed influence model at the industry level. This helps us to evaluate the consistency of evidence at two different levels of analysis. We also evaluate two flexible diffusion models: the Gompertz and Weibull models. Our results show that the diffusion patterns of IT outsourcing do not appear to be lognormal, suggesting that IT outsourcing does not follow a pure diffusion process. Instead, we find the presence of contagion effects in the diffusion of IT outsourcing. During periods of the most rapid outsourcing growth – the contagion periods – the actions of the large and more visible firms may provide exemplars for smaller firms, reducing their inhibitions about committing to IT outsourcing. We also find that the results of the mixed influence and the Weibull models, which provide the best fit for overall IT outsourcing diffusion patterns, are potentially indicative of the existence of spillovers that might drive the observed contagion effects at the industry level. Abstract: Information technology (IT) expenditures across various nations around the world have been impressive but controversial lately. Research is needed to know how IT expenditures are growing in different nations. Do developed nations show a different growth pattern than developing nations? Do stages of IT development or price drops in IT infrastructure influence such growth? We intend to explore these issues with various growth models, using data from 49 nations (constrained by data availability) over a period of time. Our preliminary results show that previous IT expenditure growth models can be improved by including the impact of price and that a price drop in IT helps keep the growth unabated. We also include prediction results from our models, to exhibit the robustness of the models considered. Collapse
