Abstract: Self-service technologies have developed as helpful tools in our everyday lives while constantly being adapted to meet new challenges and requirements in today’s world. This study explores the factors influencing usage intentions towards a selfservice kiosk with biometric authentication in a retail context. A quantitative study with 28 participants was conducted in a laboratory environment. Participants were asked to purchase a SIM card at a self-service kiosk. The findings revealed that convenience and relative advantage had a strong impact on usage intention. In contrast, functionality and security concerns towards biometric authentication showed no significant effects. In addition, the results indicate that usage intention affected positive word of mouth. Further analysis revealed that usage intention mediated the relationship between the significant influence factors (i.e., convenience, relative advantage) and word of mouth. Collapse

Abstract: Digital platforms are restructuring how many companies and industries function, including humanitarian organisations that operate in complex environments and serve vulnerable populations. To date, however, there has been limited study of their use in humanitarian and particularly refugee contexts. This paper seeks to address this gap by drawing on the concept of platformisation to study the opportunities and challenges arising from UNHCR's transition from a closed transactional system to an open innovation platform focusing on core processes of identification, value creation and platform governance that are relevant for refugee management and protection. Our empirical study captures the perspectives of the UNHCR, organisational stakeholders and refugees in the world's largest refugee camp in Northern Uganda with regards to UNHCR's strategy towards platform openness. We find that UNHCR's data transformation strategy introduces the potential for increasing institutional value in the form of more effective service delivery to refugees. However, these technological opportunities do not necessarily translate to greater value if they do not mesh with current work practices, incentives and activities of service provider organisations and refugees. Our study helps identify opportunities to address these constraints, primarily through improving understanding of the emergent governance-related tensions that exist for digital platforms for development and surfacing existing issues of exclusion and vulnerability. We conclude with insights for the broader theorisation of identification platforms and with recommendations for policies and practices that together might help realise the potential value creation introduced through the platformisation of identification systems. Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) gained much public attention since the success of Poke´mon Go in 2016. Technology companies like Apple or Google are currently focusing primarily on mobile AR (MAR) technologies, i.e. applications on mobile devices, like smartphones or tablets. Associated privacy issues have to be investigated early to foster market adoption. This is especially relevant since past research found several threats associated with the use of smartphone applications. Thus, we investigate two of the main privacy risks for MAR application users based on a sample of 19 of the most downloaded MAR applications for Android. First, we assess threats arising from bad privacy policies based on a machine-learning approach. Second, we investigate which smartphone data resources are accessed by the MAR applications. Third, we combine both approaches to evaluate whether privacy policies cover certain data accesses or not. We provide theoretical and practical implications and recommendations based on our results. Abstract: In the United Kingdom (UK), the Data Protection Act (DPA) has been in force since 1998, whereas South African (SA) organisations are preparing for compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). The objective of this research is to compare aspects of data protection compliance between the UK and SA to establish if a country that has had data protection in place for a longer period of time has a higher level of compliance with data protection requirements in an online context compared to a country that is preparing for compliance, using the results to make recommendations for non-compliance aspects. To fulfil the research objective, an insurance industry multi-case study was conducted. Similar data privacy requirements from the DPA and POPIA were selected for the multi-case study and as such, consent for direct marketing, secure processing of personal information (PI), privacy policies and sharing of PI collected via websites were evaluated. For each country, PI of four created consumer profiles was deposited to 10 insurance company websites in each country to evaluate the requirements. The results showed that some of the websites did not honor the selected opt-out preferences as direct marketing material was sent to the SA and UK consumer profiles. Forty two unsolicited third party contacts were received by the SA consumer profiles indicating unconsented distribution of PI in SA. In comparison, no unsolicited contacts were received by any of the UK profiles. The results demonstrate that the UK, being regarded as a jurisdiction with a heavy stance towards privacy implementation and regulation, is more compliant than SA in terms of implementation of the evaluated data protection requirements included in the scope of this study. SA insurance organisations should ensure that the noncompliance aspects are addressed and can learn from the manner in which the UK insurance organisations implement the privacy requirements. Furthermore, the UK insurance organisations should focus on improved compliance for direct marking to aid with compliance to the DPA and upcoming General Data Protection Act. Collapse

Abstract: This paper focuses on interdependencies between mobile Internet (MI) usage and mobile voice (MV) calling patterns among residential customers in one member country of the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The analyzed data set contains usage data of 10,366 postpaid subscribers of a mobile network operator (MNO) in a GCC country over 25 months from July 2013 to July 2015. The results suggest a complementary MV–MI usage relationship. This relationship is more positive for users who (1) send fewer SMS, (2) are younger, (3) are foreign nationals, (4) use a smartphone, and (5) have a longer tariff tenure. The strength of MV–MI usage association in the GCC country sample is larger than relationships observed in earlier work, which analyzed MNO subscribers in Europe. This suggests that the development trajectory of a country’s telecommunications service market moderates the relationship between MI and MV calling use intensity. Collapse

Abstract: This study presents a framework to understand and explain the design and configuration of digital payment platforms and how these platforms create conditions for market entries. By embracing the theoretical lens of platform envelopment, we employed a multiple and comparative-case study in a European setting by using our framework as an analytical lens to assess market-entry conditions. We found that digital payment platforms have acquired market entry capabilities, which is achieved through strategic platform design (i.e., platform development and service distribution) and technology design (i.e., issuing evolutionary and revolutionary payment instruments). The studied cases reveal that digital platforms leverage payment services as a mean to bridge and converge core and adjacent platform markets. In so doing, platform envelopment strengthens firms’ market position in their respective core markets. This study contributes to the extant literature on digital platforms, market entries, and payment. Collapse

Abstract: The proliferation of low-cost mobile devices has allowed a large proportion of users living in emerging economies to use mobile applications. Despite the increasing number of novice users using mobile applications, researchers seldom consider usability for these users when examining performance, satisfaction and experience with usage of mobile applications. In this study, we suggest that it is not appropriate to design one interface for all users at all different literacy levels of increasingly diverse communities. We propose a user-acclimatized approach to adapting mobile applications that integrates three types of interaction elements, namely content personalization, structural navigation and representation. In an evaluation of the proposed approach on mobile devices, we conducted a field study in India to demonstrate the effect of user acclimatization on performance, satisfaction and experience for novice users. The findings provide theoretical and practical implications for the design and implementation of user interface on mobile applications. Collapse

Abstract: Although businesses are increasing their mobile advertising budgets, its strategic value and effectiveness have not been investigated in depth. Using data from an automobile advertisement campaign, we focus on investigating the efficacy of mobile advertising in terms of consumers’ response to sign up for a car test drive in relation to their search behavior. We propose and estimate an empirical model of advertising response and search behaviors based on a panel-level random-effects specification of simultaneous binary logit and Poisson count models. We find that users’ reactions to the advertiser’s target response are related to a) the depth and breadth of information search, b) contents viewed in each session, c) the number of return session visits and session durations. The sensitivities of advertising response to the numbers of informative and persuasive ad views, the numbers of images and characters viewed are higher during the campaign’s focal event of a car show. Abstract: Sales agents depend on mobile support systems for their daily work. Independent sales agencies, however, are not able to facilitate this kind of mobile support on their own due to their small size and lack of the necessary funds. Since their processes correlate with confidential information and include the initiation and alteration of legally binding transactions they have a high need for security. In this contribution we first propose an IT-artifact consisting of a service platform that supports multi-vendor sales processes based on previous work. We then analyze use cases of sales representatives of independent sales agencies using this system and derive their security requirements. We then propose a security extension to the IT-artifact and evaluate this extension by comparing it to existing solutions. Our results show that the proposed artifact extension provides a more convenient and secure solution than already existing approaches. Collapse
