Abstract: In business-as-usual scenarios, the carbon dioxide (CO2) foot print from global maritime shipping is estimated to rise up to 50% in 2050; in 2018 levels this accounts for 1,500 Mt [6]. The contribution of smart ports towards reducing air emissions comprises achieving higher operational efficiency. However, since air emissions monitoring is diversified in the maritime ports domain, it is difficult to obtain (comparable) emissions inventories (EIs) and judge upon the quality of air emissions monitoring as a whole of one or many ports. We understand this paper as a contribution to the monitoring component of green and smart ports, for which we propose a shared platform to create EIs frequently, foster standardization, transparency and comparability, and provide the basis for assessing the quality of emissions monitoring quality. The evaluation suggests potentials regarding, e.g., EIs standardization and frequency, and motivates further investigation such as integrating port tenants. Collapse

Abstract: In the recent past, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems have been introduced as a means to assist speech impaired persons to interconnect with the environment and to increase their communication skills. Considering this, tablet-PC-based AAC systems are getting ever more popular due to reasons of cost efficiency, portability and social acceptance. However, many existing apps do not fully exploit the software and hardware capabilities of topical devices. Moreover, studies on the capabilities of platform-related development environments (e.g., iOS SDK) – in their current versions – to realize tablet-PC-based AAC systems are missing. Abstract: Mobile health systems in recent times, have notably improved the healthcare sector by empowering patients to actively participate in their health, and by facilitating access to healthcare professionals. Effective operation of these mobile systems nonetheless, requires high level of intelligence and expertise implemented in the form of decision support systems (DSS). However, common challenges in the implementation include generalization and reliability, due to the dynamics and incompleteness of information presented to the inference models. In this paper, we advance the use of ad hoc mobile decision support system to monitor and detect triggers and early symptoms of respiratory distress provoked by strenuous physical exertion. The focus is on the application of certainty theory to model inexact reasoning by the mobile monitoring system. The aim is to develop a mobile tool to assist patients in managing their conditions, and to provide objective clinical data to aid physicians in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of the respiratory ailments. We present the proposed model architecture and then describe an application scenario in a clinical setting. We also show implementation of an aspect of the system that enables patients in the self-management of their conditions. Collapse

Abstract: The design and development of sustainable software systems require software architects to consider a variety of architectural solutions and their trade-offs. With the frequent introduction of new architectural methods and software solutions, as well as, due to time-to-market constraints faced by software architects, considering even a subset of alternative architectural solutions during the decision-making process is a challenge. In this paper, we propose a recommendation system that automatically annotates architectural elements in software architecture documents and then proposes a) alternative architectural solutions for the annotated elements and b) concrete software solutions to realize an architectural design decision. These annotations and recommendations are derived from the knowledge captured in a publicly available cross-domain ontology. The evaluation of the recommendation system indicates that our approach can effectively support software architects to consider alternative architectural solutions while making architectural design decisions. Abstract: Digitalization offers both great opportunities as well as new challenges and uncertainties. In particular, students in their role as future employees will have to cope with the new digital environments, which makes lifelong learning and up-to-date skills even more important than they already are. Key players in this long-term development are the universities as providers of the necessary skills and knowledge. By now, it is clear that digitalization will have a broad impact on the future conditions of universities. But are they already prepared for it? Against this backdrop, we present an approach to combine universities’ offerings with the required industry job skills to identify potential curricular gaps at course level that arise through ongoing digitalization and, as a consequence, changing skill requests for employees. We identify an appropriate set of methods for our project including text mining methods, an expert survey and an interview phase for evaluation. Abstract: Dating apps for mobile devices, one popular GeoSocial app category, are growing increasingly popular. These apps encourage the sharing of more personal information than conventional social media apps, including continuous location data. However, recent high profile incidents have highlighted the privacy risks inherent in using these apps. In this paper, we present a case study utilizing forensic techniques on nine popular proximity-based dating apps in order to determine the types of data that can be recovered from user devices. We recover a number of data types from these apps that raise concerns about user privacy. For example, we determine that chat messages could be recovered in at least half of the apps examined and, in some cases, the details of any users that had been discovered nearby could also be extracted. Abstract: With rapid improvements in technology, the ever-pressing need to reduce healthcare costs, and continuing legislation emphasizing medical reforms, the demand for research within the healthcare/information systems interface is growing. In this study, we ascertain the prevalent themes from the extant medical informatics literature in an effort to motivate research beyond the traditional domain of health information technology research so information systems scholars can better understand where their expertise might contribute to advancements in healthcare. We used a quantitative content analysis method to systematically explore 2,188 article texts from journals in medical informatics, medicine, and MIS published over a ten-year period. Texts were analyzed using centering resonance analysis and factor analysis and the following themes emerged from the literature: Analytics; Healthcare Operations and Standards (with sub-themes: Operations, Project Management, and Information Assurance); Knowledge Transfer/Communication (with sub-themes: Extending beyond the Organization, Internal to the Organization, and Patient-Provider); Perceptions and Managing Expectations of Information Technology; Advancements in Research; and Software as a Service. In this article, we discuss these themes in greater detail and offer directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: The market leaders of Cloud Computing try to leverage the parallel-processing capability of GPUs to provide more economic services than traditions. As the cornerstone of enterprise applications, database systems are of the highest priority to be improved for the performance and design complexity reduction. It is the purpose of this paper to design an in-memory database, called CUDADB, to scale up the performance of the database system on GPU with CUDA. The details of implementation and algorithms are presented, and the experiences of GPU-enabled CUDA database operations are also shared in this paper. For performance evaluation purposes, SQLite is used as the comparison target. From the experimental results, CUDADB performs better than SQLite for most test cases. And, surprisingly, the CUDADB performance is independent from the number of data records in a query result set. The CUDADB performance is a static proportion of the total number of data records in the target table. Finally, this paper comes out a concept of turning point that represents the difference ratio between CUDADB and SQLite. Collapse
