Abstract: The use of big data promises to drive economic growth and development and can therefore be a value-adding factor, but compared to private or public organisations, the country level is rarely investigated, and that is even more evident for developing countries. Another topic hardly ever considered in the big data research field is ‘big data readiness’, which means the level of preparation and willingness to exploit big data. We address these shortcomings in the literature and focus on the big data readiness of developing countries. Thus, the first research question is: what components are required for an index measuring big data readiness, and how can such an index be designed? We use a design science approach to develop the “Big Data Readiness Index” (BDRI), which is then applied to all African countries to answer our second research question: how do African countries perform in terms of the BDRI? Our analysis yields country rankings that show relatively high BDRI scores for coastal countries, such as South Africa, Kenya and Namibia, and for islands, such as Mauritius. Abstract: Cellular phones have gained popularity in emerging and developing economies over the last two decades. In this study, we show that the phenomenon of falling prices over time is applicable to the diffusion of prepaid mobile phones. This article extends the logistic diffusion model to accommodate disadopters of the service category. Goodness of fit of the extended model is found superior to the original version, which does not consider dis adoption. The empirical findings show that for the 12 countries considered in the analysis, the diffusion speeds and the disadoption rates are influenced by one marketing factor and three socioeconomic factors. Abstract: Studies have shown that global development efforts need to address the ability of people to achieve better livelihoods using information and communication technologies. The challenge remains one of understanding what development efforts lead to better livelihoods. As the relationship between mobile phones and health remains elusive, this paper investigates health wellbeing in the light of increasing mobile phone penetration. A simple cluster analysis of the data used on mobile phone penetration and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Health index revealed five clusters. In order to understand the effects on human development, the relationship between these variables and the Human Development Index (HDI) was carried out. The contribution of this paper is in uncovering a positive significant correlation between both mobile phone penetration and the health index as well as both variables and the HDI.
