Abstract: Team research typically assumes that team performance is normally distributed: teams cluster around average performance, performance variability is not substantial, and few teams inhabit the upper range of the distribution. Ironically, although most team research and methodological practices rely on the normality assumption, many theories actually imply nonnormality (e.g., performance spirals, team composition, team learning, punctuated equilibrium). Accordingly, we investigated the nature and antecedents of team performance distributions by relying on 274 performance distributions including 200,825 teams (e.g., sports, politics, firefighters, information technology, customer service) and more than 500,000 workers. First, regarding their overall nature, only 11% of the distributions were normal, star teams are much more prevalent than predicted by normality, the power law with an exponential cutoff is the most dominant distribution among nonnormal distributions (i.e., 73%), and incremental differentiation (i.e., differential performance trajectories across teams) is the best explanation for the emergence of these distributions. Second, this conclusion remained unchanged after examining theory-based boundary conditions (i.e., tournament versus nontournament contexts, performance as aggregation of individual-level performance versus performance as a team-level construct, performance assessed with versus without a hard left-tail zero, and more versus less sample homogeneity). Third, we used the team learning curve literature as a conceptual framework to test hypotheses and found that authority differentiation and lower temporal stability are associated with distributions with larger performance variability (i.e., a greater proportion of star teams). We discuss implications for existing theory, future research directions, and methodological practices (e.g., need to check for nonnormality, Bayesian analysis, outlier management). Abstract: Current state-of-the-art artificial intelligence struggles with accurate interpretation of out-of-library (OOL) objects. One method proposed remedy is analogical reasoning (AR), which utilizes abductive reasoning to draw inferences on an unfamiliar scenario given knowledge about a similar familiar scenario. Currently, applications of visual AR gravitate toward analogy-formatted image problems rather than to computer vision data sets. The Image Recognition Through Analogical Reasoning Algorithm (IRTARA) approach described herein shows how AR can be leveraged to improve computer vision in OOL situations. IRTARA produces a word-based term frequency list that characterizes the OOL object of interest. To evaluate the quality of the results of IRTARA, both quantitative and qualitative assessments are used, including a baseline to compare the automated methods with human-generated results. Fifteen OOL objects were tested using IRTARA, which showed consistent results across all three evaluation methods on the objects that performed exceptionally well or poorly overall. Collapse

Abstract: Reliable hotel cancellation prediction can help establish appropriate operational strategies for hotel manage­ ment. In this sector, personal name records (PNR) data may be the most representative information source for prediction tasks. Despite the popularity of PNR, its inherent lack of availability has been commonly disregarded in the literature. Existing studies have directly input PNR into high-dimensional machine learning (ML) models to achieve cancellation predictions. Another type of model generates cancellation prediction based on the proba­ bility modeling of samples. In this study, we propose an interpretable feature interaction method to enrich the existing PNR information. Thereafter, we empirically assess the prediction performance of the two model classes. This study specifically determines whether or not the two methods can cross-fertilize each other to improve cancellation prediction. To do so, we propose a model integrating Bayesian networks (BNs) and Lasso regression for this prediction task. This study utilizes BNs for the probability model consistent with our correlated variables and dichotomous prediction setting. Moreover, we use a linear ML model (i.e., Lasso regression), given its ad­ vantages in reducing ineffective predictors and transparency for ranking feature importance. Empirical results show that the proposed integration model has better prediction performance, and the obtained BN estimators and interactive features are the most important predictors. This study contributes to the booking cancellation liter­ ature by proposing an interpretable feature interaction and a prediction method integrating two types of effective models. The obtained accurate and interpretable cancellation prediction further contributes to offering practical implications to hoteliers in managerial decision-making. Collapse

Abstract: Discrimination is a pervasive aspect of modern society and human relations. Statistical discrimination theory suggests that profit-maximizing employers should use all the information about job candidates, including information about group membership (e.g., race or gender), to make accurate predictions. In contrast, research on heuristics in psychology suggests that using less information can be better. Drawing on research on heuristics, we show that even small amounts of inconsistency can make predictions using group membership less accurate than predictions that do not use this information. That is, whereas statistical discrimination theory implies that better predictions can be achieved by using all available information about an individual (including group characteristics that may be correlated with but do not cause performance), our model shows that using all available information only improves predictive accuracy under a very specific set of conditions, thus suggesting that statistical discrimination often results in worse predictions. By understanding when statistical discrimination improves or worsens predictions, our work cautions decision makers and uncovers paths toward reducing the occurrence of situations in which statistical discrimination benefits predictive accuracy, thus reducing its pervasiveness in society. Abstract: In the field of multi-attribute group decision-making (MAGDM), “decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory” (DEMATEL) is a popular method that has been deployed to discover hidden relationships among many inter-twined factors of numerous real-world problems. This paper discusses several limitations of the DEMATEL method in mining the causal relationships and ranking the factors. Also, in this paper, we develop a novel decision-making framework that will be able to overcome the issues found in the DEMATEL method and tackle both formal and informal decisions. This model, which we call “Causal Relationship and Ranking Technique (CRRT)”, uses a data-deterministic expert weighing setup rather than assigning equal weights or pre-defined weights to each expert. The model proposes a better technique to mine factor inter-relations and proposes two new types of digraphs portraying the causal inter-relationships among the factors, and also proposes a new two-step factor ranking method based on the derived causal relationships. The intuitionistic fuzzy setting is considered in this work in order to capture the uncertainty of expert opinions. Furthermore, our proposed framework is applied to a real-life case study on discovering various factors of a high school administration, that have a significant influence on students’ performance. Comparison with standard methods such as TOPSIS and VIKOR for student performance data and also some other datasets such as supplier selection data, and sustainability data proves that the model is able to rank the factors better than the existing models. Abstract: This study examines how changes between drawing inspiration from distant knowledge and focusing on local knowledge affect contributions in online communities. The research compares two theoretical frameworks for understanding knowledge generation: The tension-based view highlights the tensional perspective of initially engaging with distant knowledge before narrowing the focus to specific domains to foster creative behavior. Conversely, the foundational view posits that creative behavior requires local expertise before it is combined with insights from distant knowledge domains. We collected data from 15 Q&A forums hosted by Stack Exchange and used natural language processing to analyze users' contributions and changes in interest. Our findings suggest that both theories explain knowledge generation. Individuals need to engage with more distant knowledge over time but also streamline their interests between local and distant knowledge domains to generate more valuable and novel contributions. The study enriches understanding of knowledge generation in online communities and offers insights into how to support creative individuals. Collapse

Abstract: Virtual reality can have advantages for education and learning. However, it must be adequately designed so that the learner benefits from the technological possibilities. Understanding the underlying effects of the virtual learning environment and the learner's prior experience with virtual reality or prior knowledge of the content is necessary to design a proper virtual learning environment. This article presents a prestudy testing the design of a virtual learning environment for engineering vocational training courses. In the pre-study, 12 employees of two companies joined the training course in one of the two degrees of immersion (desktop VR and VR HMD). Quantitative results on learning success, cognitive load, usability, motivation, and qualitative learning process data were presented. The qualitative data assessment shows that overall, the employees were satisfied with the learning environment regardless of the level of immersion and that the participants asked for more guidance and structure accompanying the learning process. Further research is needed to test for solid group differences. Collapse

Abstract: While the emerging research field of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) claims to address the lack of explainability in high-performance machine learning models, in practice, XAI targets developers rather than actual end-users. Unsurprisingly, end-users are often unwilling to use XAI-based decision support systems. Similarly, there is limited interdisciplinary research on end-users' behavior during XAI explanations usage, rendering it unknown how explanations may impact cognitive load and further affect end-user performance. Therefore, we conducted an empirical study with 271 prospective physicians, measuring their cognitive load, task performance, and task time for distinct implementationindependent XAI explanation types using a COVID-19 use case. We found that these explanation types strongly influence end-users' cognitive load, task performance, and task time. Further, we contextualized a mental efficiency metric, ranking local XAI explanation types best, to provide recommendations for future applications and implications for sociotechnical XAI research. Abstract: In recent years, social media has become an indispensable source of information through which public attitudes, opinions, and concerns can be studied and quantified. This paper proposes an interpretable machine learning framework for predicting the Equity Market-related Economic Uncertainty Index using features generated from a popular discussion forum on Reddit. Our framework consists of a series of custom preprocessing and analytics methods, including BERTopic for latent topic identification and regularized linear models. Using our framework, we evaluate explanatory models with different configurations over a large corpus of Reddit posts belonging to the personal finance category. Our analysis generates valuable insights about discussion topics on Reddit and their efficacy in accurately predicting future economic uncertainty. The study demonstrates the potential of using social media data and interpretable machine learning to inform economic forecasting research. Collapse
