Abstract: Escalation of commitment -the tendency to persist with failing courses of action -can determine whether a distressed Information Systems (IS) project can be turned around. To disentangle the emotional and cognitive factors that give rise to escalation we conducted a between-subject randomized controlled laboratory experiment with 75 Master, MBA, and Ph.D. students, including data triangulation between neurophysiological and behavioral measures. This study successfully replicates the bias in the context of IS project distress, provides evidence for a psychophysiological link, supports the predictions on the role of negative and complex emotional states of self-justification theory over coping theory, and adds to a better understanding of how escalation tendency changes over time due to learning effects. Our findings contribute to enhancing decision-making in uncertain environments by using cognitive and emotional markers and thereby provide the foundation for developing neuro-adaptive de-escalation strategies. Abstract: Intelligent agents (IAs) are permeating both business and society. However, interacting with IAs poses challenges moving beyond technological limitations towards the human-computer interface. Thus, the knowledgebase related to interaction with IAs has grown exponentially but remains segregated and impedes the advancement of the field. Therefore, we conduct a systematic literature review to integrate empirical knowledge on user interaction with IAs. This is the first paper to examine 107 Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction papers and identified 389 relationships between design elements and user acceptance of IAs. Along the independent and dependent variables of these relationships, we span a research space model encompassing empirical research on designing for IA user acceptance. Further we contribute to theory, by presenting a research agenda along the dimensions of the research space, which shall be useful to both researchers and practitioners. This complements the past and present knowledge on designing for IA user acceptance with potential pathways into the future of IAs. Collapse

Abstract: Blockchain technology is said to have a high disruptive potential and can do without an intermediary. Numerous contributions deal with its impact on and possibilities for logistics and supply chains. In this article, we use a multiple case analysis to develop an explanatory model for the interaction of actors in an operational supply chain involving blockchain technology. In addition, we show which intermediary tasks the blockchain could replace and what impact this would have on the industry logic. For this purpose, we analyze the status quo in practice based on a multiple case study with real use cases and find answers to our research questions. The findings of the paper include (1) insights into the impact of blockchain technology on the logistics industry, and (2) the implications and research questions related to blockchain technology and the impact of blockchain technology on business models. Abstract: This paper presents a framework for estimating and updating user preferences in the context of app-based recommender systems. We specifically consider recommender systems which provide personalized menus of options to users. A Hierarchical Bayes procedure is applied in order to account for inter- and intra-consumer heterogeneity, representing random taste variations among individuals and among choice situations (menus) for a given individual, respectively. Three levels of preference parameters are estimated: population-level, individual-level and menu-specific. In the context of a recommender system, the estimation of these parameters is repeated periodically in an offline process in order to account for trends, such as changing market conditions. Furthermore, the individual-level parameters are updated in real-time as users make choices in order to incorporate the latest information from the users. This online update is computationally efficient which makes it feasible to embed it in a real-time recommender system. The estimated individual-level preferences are stored for each user and retrieved as inputs to a menu optimization model in order to provide recommendations. The proposed methodology is applied to both Monte-Carlo and real data. It is observed that the online update of the parameters is successful in improving the parameter estimates in real-time. This framework is relevant to various recommender systems that generate personalized recommendations ranging from transportation to e-commerce and online marketing, but is particularly useful when the attributes of the alternatives vary over time. Abstract: Customer relationship management (CRM) is becoming a critical source of competitive advantage for businesses today. However, many CRM business processes are deficient and inflexible. For example, many customers are dissatisfied with complaint management. Still, companies seldom systematically adapt the complaint management process. In theory, operational and analytical CRM form a closed loop: analytical CRM uses business intelligence (BI) tools to analyze operational data and the knowledge gained is used for continual optimization of operations. One special approach in establishing this loop is to continually support decision points in operational processes with knowledge from BI. In this way, the use of BI becomes an integral part of business processes, which are then referred to as intelligent business processes. However, in CRM not much is known about this approach. Abstract: Childhood obesity is an increasingly pervasive problem. Traditional therapy programs are time- and cost-intensive. Furthermore, success of therapy is often not guaranteed. Typically, success of therapies is determined by comparison of body mass index (BMI) before and after a therapy. In this paper, we present a Data-analytical Information Systems (DAIS) that provides predictions of future BMI changes before conducting a therapy. The DAIS considers current parameters like age as well as heart rate during a standardized exercise. By predicting outcomes of a therapy, healthcare practitioners could personalize standard therapies and improve the outcome. We collected data from randomized clinical trial and trained Machine Learning models to estimate whether BMI will decrease after therapy with 85% accuracy. Accuracy of predictions is compared with domain experts’ predictions. Further, we present empirical results of the domain experts' perception regarding the proposed DAIS. Our DAIS provides positive evidence as a tool for personalized medicine. Collapse

Abstract: The business model has become an increasingly important concept to facilitate competitive advantages. However, due to its complexity managers face difficulties to evaluate how changes in the business model affect its performance. Existing approaches fall short to facilitate sufficient understanding of the influencing factors that drive the business models behavior. Drawing from System Dynamics, we propose a multi-step evaluation method to effectively support decision making in the context of complexity. Thereby we focus on the integration of available knowledge and data to explicate and quantify the essential cause-effect relationships inside the business model. The artifact is evaluated through multiple use cases inside the BMW Group. It reveals that System Dynamics enhances business model understanding not only for the decision maker but also for the stakeholders which enhances subsequent implementation of business model changes. Abstract: Process analysts and other professionals extensively use process models to analyze business processes and identify performance improvement opportunities. Therefore, it is important that such models can be easily and properly understood. Previous research has mainly focused on two types of factors that are important in this context: (i) properties of the model itself, and (ii) properties of the model reader. The work in this paper aims at determining how the performance of subjects varies across different types of comprehension tasks, which is a new angle. To reason about the complexity of comprehension tasks we take a theoretical perspective that is grounded in visual cognition. We test our hypotheses using a free-simulation experiment that incorporates eye-tracking technology. We find that model-related and person-related factors are fully mediated by variables of visual cognition. Moreover, in comparison, visual cognition variables provide a significantly higher explanatory power for the duration and efficiency of comprehension tasks. These insights shed a new perspective on what influences sense-making of process models, shifting the attention from model and reader characteristics to the complexity of the problem-solving task at hand. Our work opens the way to investigate and develop effective strategies to support readers of process models, for example through the context-sensitive use of visual cues. Collapse

Abstract: Social media adoption by firms has generally increased over time; however, little is known about why small firms do or do not use these digital technologies. Using a survey of 268 Swiss small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), this study identifies the determinants of social media adoption by SMEs. The descriptive results show that only 35% of SMEs adopt social media for business purposes. On the basis of technology acceptance theories at the individual level as well as qualitative research this study develops theory, hypotheses, and a measurement instrument on factors and mechanisms influencing the strategic application of social media in SMEs. In line with technology acceptance theories, the results show that SME executives are mainly influenced by the expectancy of low returns as well as high perceived risks to not adopt social media applications in their companies. In contrast, aspects of perceived ease of use of social media have no effect on their social media adoption. However, aspects of perceived ease of use require a closer analysis on more complex patterns in the context of social media adoption in SMEs. The implications for research on small business management, technology adoption, and social media marketing are discussed. Collapse
