Abstract: Despite the widespread knowledge that corporations collect and exchange user online personal data (OPD) between themselves in a market for OPD, there have been few attempts to systematically understand the nature and structure of these markets or answer basic questions about the behavior of parties in these markets. This paper addresses these questions using records of data sharing behavior by 218 websites across eight economic sectors. Two datasets, collected 4 years apart, are analyzed using social network analysis (SNA). Findings indicate linear preferential attachment is the most likely coordinating mechanism in the OPD market. Further, this market has a much higher number of brokers (intermediary corporations that facilitate exchange between other corporations) than comparable markets. Building on these findings, implications for research and practice are presented along with future research directions. Collapse

Abstract: Traditionally, IT firms closely guard the management and control of critical information assets. A group of IT firms, however, adopted a different approach and formed an organization with the goal of sharing critical IT security information with industry peers (firms in the same industry that do not directly compete) and competitors to more effectively manage IT security. The inherent vulnerability in sharing critical information with other (potentially competing) firms presents an interesting, coopetition paradox for firms. Drawing from the theoretical foundations of the relational view of the firm that resolves the coopetition paradox, we conducted an empirical test to determine whether security information sharing impacts firm's financial performance. Our findings suggest that IT firms engaged in interfirm security information sharing outperform their industry peers in terms of operational costs and overall profitability. Collapse

Abstract: The extent to which information technology (IT) is used strategically is measured in a sample of 147 small Slovene firms. Slovenia is interesting from a small business perspective, because from 1990, when the transformation of its economy started, the number of small business has increased almost 6 times (from almost 6.500 to nearly 35.000 in 1998). The results have shown IT industry leadership and also IT’s role in a firm to be the strongest predictors in the strategic usage of IT. It was also found that IT is particularly well utilized in firms emphasizing innovation and, to a lesser degree, an efficiency strategy. Firms pursuing a low-cost strategy were the least likely to utilize IT strategically. Collapse

Abstract: CEOs in 46 firms were interviewed in regard to the pattern of the environmental scanning they performed. The results were analyzed to determine the degree of use of information systems by CEOs in their strategic decision making and to seek a link with the firm's success in introducing new products. The study indicates significant differences in the level of environmental scanning and in the use of information systems between firms that were more successful in introducing new products into the market and firms that were less successful. The differences are in the pattern and the frequency of conducting environmental scanning, in the number of computerized applications, and in the number of advanced marketing information systems.
