Abstract: Algorithmic control (AC) is an emerging phenomenon shaping the future of work. While AC is already well established in the platform economy, it is also gaining traction in traditional organizations. Given that AC represents a new phenomenon, it still suffers from a relatively immature conceptual basis. Here, an up-and-coming conceptual AC framework is the so-called "6R" framework by Kellogg et al. (2020). This framework, however, has not been conceptually and empirically validated yet, which is the focus of the study at hand. To validate the 6R framework, we use a combination of a literature review (topdown) and interviews (bottom-up). Our study sets forth to refine and extend the framework, resulting in an updated 5RSM framework of AC. The proposed framework represents an updated conceptualization of AC, applicable to both platform and traditional work settings, and lays the foundation for future research, including scale development. Abstract: New assistive technology (AT) is at our disposal for improving the everyday life of people in need. Yet, the current way how AT is produced and provisioned is hindering certain marginalised groups in the population, particularly elderly people, to get access to it. To expedite time-to-market, reduce costs, and increase accessibility to otherwise unattainable AT, we explore if do-it-yourself (DIY) could be a feasible and desirable alternative to commercial applications. We provide answers to the following research questions: (1) For whom does the DIY approach work in the context of assistive technology? (2) Under which circumstances do DIY work? and (3) How can researchers make DIY a satisfying experience? The evidence we collected during the “iCare” project suggests that DIY attracts both, elderly people with a need-based motive and a hedonic motive. It also shows that a participatory approach and an early engagement with potential users, their family members, and informal caregivers is beneficial for improving design and use-related aspects of the AT and the DIY intervention. Abstract: Comparing to other price-volatile cryptocurrencies, stablecoins provide a reliable way to store value and make transactions, and thus are more suitable for daily-life usage and investment risk control. However, there remains a lack of understanding of how stablecoin can gain success. This may lead to the introduction of stablecoins based on uninformed proposals, which may eventually fail. In turn, owners of these stablecoins may suffer from significant financial losses. Using theories of Information Systems and digital startups failures as the theoretical foundation, our study identified four underlying factors (lack of scarcity, lack of fiat reserve backup, decentralization, and failure of value creation) and two triggers (massive selling by major investors and algorithm malfunction) behind the collapse of a stablecoin, based on the case of TerraUSD's collapse. Our findings provide implications for stablecoins issuers to prioritize maintenance and foster user adoption, thus increasing the likelihood of success of stablecoins. Collapse

Abstract: Social media platforms can offer a sense of social inclusion and equitable access to information for minority groups, including minority immigrants to Western countries. However, even as they empower minority community-based organizations (CBOs) to assist their members, these platforms can also create conditions for further exclusion and inequity if they are too exclusive (i.e., drift towards segregation) or too inclusive (i.e., drift towards dilution). This paper aims to extend prior platform governance research to understand how to govern minority CBO platforms featuring both minority and non-minority members in a way that maintains a balance between segregation and dilution, the two paradoxical forces of drifting. By adopting a longitudinal, grounded-theory study of three social media platforms in a minority CBO (one segregated, one balanced, and one diluted), I identify three categories of governing practices (ajar gatekeeping, opportunity manipulating, and output harmonizing), which maintain platform balance against segregational or dilutional drifting. Abstract: The humanitarian crisis resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to millions of displaced individuals across Europe. Addressing the evolving needs of these refugees is crucial for hosting countries and humanitarian organizations. This study leverages social media analytics to supplement traditional surveys, providing real-time insights into refugee needs by analyzing over two million messages from Telegram, a vital platform for Ukrainian refugees in Germany. We employ Natural Language Processing techniques, including language identification, sentiment analysis, and topic modeling, to identify well-defined topic clusters such as housing, financial and legal assistance, language courses, job market access, and medical needs. Our findings also reveal changes in topic occurrence and nature over time. To support practitioners, we introduce an interactive web-based dashboard for continuous analysis of refugee needs. Abstract: As global disruptions escalate, digital resilience (DR)—the capacity to anticipate, absorb, and adapt to external shocks by leveraging Information Systems (IS)—has become crucial for individuals and organisations confronting and managing unprecedented crises. This research advances understanding on how to develop DR, drawing on insights from an Action Design Research (ADR) study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our research explores a particular facet of DR: the capacity to manage exogenous shocks through the design of new IS solutions. We introduce the ADAPT framework, comprising five key enablers—Agility, Designation, Alignment, Participation, and Trust—recommended to support design teams developing IS solutions during and for crises. Our ADR project, which resulted in the creation of a telemonitoring system used by over 115 frontline healthcare workers to monitor the symptoms of more than 1000 COVID-19 patients, demonstrates the instrumental role these five enablers play in supporting a crisis-propelled IS design process that is urgent, resource-limited, and multi-partite. By presenting new design process knowledge and practical recommendations that guide crisis-driven IS design, we aim to equip design teams with the understanding they need to effectively navigate similar challenges in the future. We also hope to inspire and support IS researchers to apply their expertise in the design, deployment, and use of IS solutions to contribute to crisis-driven design endeavours that tackle the pressing and urgent challenges of our time. Abstract: Blockchain gives rise to many new applications and use cases and has already markedly changed several industries, such as financial services, energy and utilities, or healthcare. Although blockchain could potentially be used disruptively for end-user applications as well, utilizing it remains poor. It appears that the unconvincing design of many end-user blockchain applications leads to insufficient user engagement. To investigate the influence of design aspects on users’ engagement of blockchain end-user applications, we developed a blockchain application for the creative industries based on the principles of persuasive design. Hereby, we aim to contribute to research in the blockchain context on how end-user applications need to be designed to increase user engagement. By using a design science research process, we can ultimately provide a total of seven recommendations for developing persuasive blockchain applications for end-users. Collapse

Abstract: Past research has explored meaningfulness in video game narratives, as well as meaningful play. However, more empirical studies are needed to understand the mechanisms of meaningful play. This paper first investigates how the design of game dialogues may enable meaningfulness in video games (eudaimonic gaming experience) and how it relates to game enjoyment (hedonic gaming experience). Second, it also examines how meaningful play influences prosocial attitudes toward culturally different outgroups. A pre-posttest experiment of a management game was conducted with 174 adult participants. Participants were randomly assigned to either a game with moral scenarios or one without. Results showed that participants who played the game with moral decision-making perceived a higher level of meaningfulness and game enjoyment. No significant relationship was found between perceived meaningfulness and intergroup perceptions. Collapse

Abstract: In today's interconnected world, Internet users are increasingly concerned about losing control over the data they share with peers, which indicates a need for higher levels of control and notification mechanisms. We address this need by building on design science methodology and developing a socio-technical artifact, i.e., a peer-privacy-friendly online messaging service. We draw on Malhotra et al.'s (2004) Internet Users' Information Privacy Concerns framework and refine and evaluate our artifact via focus groups, interviews, and a survey among users of online messaging services. Our artifact provides senders with the ability to control how their personal information is processed by peers and allows receivers to be made aware of the sender's privacy expectations. We contribute to the growing literature on peer privacy concerns by developing and evaluating design requirements, principles, and an instantiation that can mitigate peer privacy concerns that go beyond concerns about organizational data practices. Abstract: People engage with social media platforms for many reasons, and this study investigates how disclosure of different types of information such as about self, others, and non-personal is influenced by privacy concerns and impacts engagement. We focus on Iranian's culture, because of restrictions put by the government on the use of Internet and social media. We propose that the privacy concerns for self and privacy for others have relationships with self-disclosure and disclosure of information about others. We also investigate the relationship between information disclosure (about self, others, and non-personal) on social media engagement. The survey data collected from Iranian participants (n=379), we empirically tested the proposed research model. We found non-personal sharing has a positive relationship with self-disclosure, disclosure about others, and engagement. Furthermore, results indicate significant negative relationships between privacy concern for self and self-disclosure and privacy concern for others and disclosure about others. Collapse
