Abstract: The advent of ‘digital’ ways of working and organising is unequivocally transforming the very fabric of work, leading to an increasingly uncertain, unsettled, and fluid environment. Research has traditionally anchored worker identity in fixed and place-bound concepts. However, in the digital workplace, where work is more akin to a performance, unfolding over time, and processual in nature, our understanding of work and theories of worker identity are called into question. In this paper, we ask the question: how is digital worker identity performed in such fluid and unsettled work settings? To explain digital worker identity performance, we investigate digital nomadism as an extremely fluid and unsettled case of digital work. We study digital nomads, high-skilled professionals who use digital technologies to work remotely and lead a nomadic lifestyle, in a multi-sited ethnographic field study. Based on a process-relational perspective, we are theorising how the identity of digital nomads, their “becoming,” is performed as an ongoing process along lines of identity performance. This is an intermediate “product of theorising,” in accord with the aim of the special issue, but provides a foundation for a novel process-relational theory of identity performance in unsettled digital work. Abstract: We take a layered approach to contextualise Information Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) to understand digital technologists’ motivations to implement technologies to address socio-economic issues based on their capabilities and kinship affiliations. We adopt an interpretive approach to conducting an inductive qualitative study of digital technologists based in South Africa. We propose three mechanisms (emotional connectedness, user-centred technologies, and symbiotic relations) through which digital technologists undertake ICT4D to exercise their agency and enhance the socio-economic well-being of disadvantaged members of society. Taking the kinship perspective and capability approach as underlying motivations for undertaking ICT4D projects allows us to contribute to the ICT4D literature. Collapse

Abstract: Digitalization is advancing rapidly around the globe. Sufficient training in programming, computer science, and IT should be provided to ensure that upcoming generations do not just experience digitalization but rather actively participate in the process. One emergent educational approach aimed to lower educational barriers and increase the engagement of children and teenagers in programming is game development based learning (GDBL). In this study, we conduct a systematic literature review of empirical papers applying GDBL within programming and computer science courses. The attributes and learning outcomes of GDBL courses for various educational settings are reported and discussed. The results suggest that GDBL in computer science and programming education is an effective approach. We conclude with implications for future research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Individuality matters. While information technology (IT) is important, more critical for the success of IS functions in an organization are its people, their values, attitudes, norms, and behavior. There are differences among IT professionals, not only at the organizational level, but also at the global level. Using data collected from more than 10,000 IT employees in 37 countries under the World IT Project, this study examines some fundamental issues of IT workers from a global perspective. While there are differences, we find that almost universally, nine individual issues are important across many countries, and they are interrelated in a similar manner. IT employees in some countries maintain stronger social bonds among themselves than those in others, which provide them with the necessary social capital to utilize in times of high work exhaustion, environmental dynamism and insecurity, as well as their efforts to change jobs. In difficult situations, the professional self-efficacy of the workers secures them. A significant number of IT employees feel that excessive work overload upsets the balance between their lives at home and workplace demands. Nevertheless, an intellectually stimulating and well-balanced work environment ensures job satisfaction for a significant number of IT employees in many countries. Collapse

Abstract: The growing complexity of systems, the increasing intensity of their use, and the greater prominence of technology in supporting organizational activities has meant that information systems (IS) professionals in organizations have to go beyond offering routine task-related support when working with their non-IS colleagues. For organizations to see IS professionals as effective, they have to carry out empathic behaviors such as sharing their IT knowledge with their non-IS colleagues and taking the initiative to minimize inconveniences during IS projects. Drawing from the organizational citizenship behavior concept, we develop a multilevel research model to examine how behaviors that IS professionals perform influence IS departments' effectiveness. Using data from more than 1,000 respondents working in the global finance industry, we conducted both cross-level and unit-level analyses and found results that support our arguments. Our results deepen the extent to which we understand the role that IS professionals play in supporting post-adoption IS use and digitally empowering business units while also performing their traditional roles. Abstract: Advances in information technology have led to the emergence of a digital workforce comprised of several types of workers, one such being the digital nomad. There is an opportunity in to expand the IS literature by investigating the entrepreneurial side of digital nomadism. Digital nomad entrepreneurship (DNE) is a growing phenomenon and distinctive approach to life and entrepreneurship. Previous research has tended to focus on either the lifestyle or business-level aspects of DNE. This study uses grounded theory method to investigate the merger of lifestyle and business factors that combine to form how an individual becomes a digital nomad entrepreneur. The findings reveal a model called the “Digital Nomad Entrepreneurship & Lifestyle Design Process”, which is comprised of four conceptual sub-categories: 1). Abstract: Our knowledge on differences in business model characteristics of thriving and failing Multi-Sided Platforms in competitive B2B networks (B2B-MSP) and potential influences of increasing governmental involvement remains fragmented. This study develops a taxonomy to classify special B2B-MSP with varying governmental influence in the supply chain and transportation context, viz. Port and Cargo Community Systems (CS). Based on the classification of 44 international CS, we identify four archetypes using cluster analysis. The taxonomy provides practitioners with a differentiated view on the configuration options of CS business models including the involvement of governmental institutions, while the presented archetypes contribute an aggregated view of CS business models. The statistical analysis of our results provides initial explanatory approaches on CS business model dimension interdependencies, thereby laying the basis for a deeper understanding of sectoral and geographic differences of B2B-MSP and their diffusion dynamics as well as facilitating a higher contextualization of future research. Abstract: During the COVID-19 pandemic, contact tracing has become a major government effort to slow down the spread of the infectious disease. As societies started implementing contact tracing technologies, they encountered tensions between conflicting values involved in protecting human rights (e.g., freedom of movement versus health security). These tensions sparked a contestation process over the meaning of contact tracing technologies. Our study investigates how two societies, South Korea and Singapore, grappled with the meaning of contact tracing technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic. We frame our inductive findings by drawing on category research to build a theoretical model of the contestation processes around new technologies. We contribute to category research by showing how a societal value system involving conflicting values is invoked in contesting the meaning of new technologies. We unpack how category contestation is shaped by and shapes technology design and use, which, in turn, is shaped by societal power structures. Collapse

Abstract: Little is known about when and where hybrid organizations diffuse. We argue that neo-institutional perspectives, which stress the constraining role of market categories and institutional logics, have to be complemented with demand-side perspectives that stress the enabling force of economic incentives to explain the origins of hybrids. We develop theory to predict the country-level diffusion of hybrid forms in Islamic banking in the 1975–2017 period, during which many conventional banks invaded the domain of Islamic banking by starting to sell Islamic banking services, or so-called “Islamic windows.” Our findings underscore the relevance of simultaneously studying the impact of constraining and enabling forces. Consistent with neo-institutional theory, we find strong evidence that a lack of constitutive legitimacy of the window form—only in countries where Muslims make up a large share of the population—and the ideological polarization of local audiences reify the ideological boundaries between the oppositional banking logics, which in turn hampers the diffusion of windows in the focal country. At the same time, however, it appears that the failure of local credit markets and country-level economic globalization, the latter even more in countries with a Muslim majority, provide potent economic incentives for the diffusion of windows. By stressing the role of utilitarian incentives and material exchange as drivers of hybridization, we bridge the gap between neo-institutional and more rationalist approaches of institutional change. Abstract: The advancement in mobile technology has enabled the application of the mobile wallet or m-wallet as an innovative payment method to substitute the traditional functions of the physical wallet. However, because of pro-innovation bias, scholars have a focus on the adoption of technology and very little attention has been given to the resistance of innovation, especially in the m-wallet context. This study addressed this absence by examining the inhibitors of m-wallet innovation adoption through the lens of innovation resistance theory (IRT). By applying a sophisticated two-staged structural equation modeling-artificial neural network (SEM-ANN) approach, we successfully extended the IRT by integrating socio-demographics and perceived novelty. The study has unveiled the noncompensatory and nonlinear relationships between the predictors and m-wallet resistance. Significant predictors from SEM analysis were taken as the ANN model’s input neurons. According to the normalized importance obtained from the multilayer perceptrons of the feed-forward-back-propagation ANN algorithm, we found significant effects of education, income, usage barrier, risk barrier, value barrier, tradition barrier, and perceived novelty on m-wallet innovation resistance. The ANN model can predict m-wallet innovation resistance with an accuracy of 76.4 %. We also discussed several new and useful theoretical and practical implications for reducing m-wallet innovation resistance among consumers. Collapse
