Abstract: Orienteering or itinerary planning algorithms in tourism are used to optimize travel routes by considering user preference and other constraints, such as time budget or traffic conditions. For these algorithms, it is essential to explore the user preference to predict potential points of interest (POIs) or tourist routes. However, nowadays, user preference has been significantly affected by COVID-19, since health concern plays a key tradeoff role. For example, people may try to avoid crowdedness, even if there is a strong desire for social interaction. Thus, the orienteering or itinerary planning algorithms should optimize routes beyond user preference. Therefore, this article proposes a social sensing system that considers the tradeoff between user preference and various factors, such as crowdedness, personality, knowledge of COVID-19, POI features, and desire for socialization. The experiments are conducted on profiling user interests with a properly trained fastText neural network and a set of specialized Naïve Bayesian Classifiers based on the “Yelp!” dataset. Also, we demonstrate how to approach and integrate COVID-related factors via conversational agents. Furthermore, the proposed system is in a modular design and evaluated in a user study; thus, it can be efficiently adapted to different algorithms for COVID-19-aware itinerary planning. Collapse

Abstract: Decision-making in everyday life has an essential role in effectively completing personal tasks and processes. The complexity of these processes and the resulting cognitive load of managing them may vary significantly. To decrease the cognitive load created by such decision-making efforts and to obtain better outcomes, recom mendation systems carry significant potential. In order to investigate the benefits provided by decision support systems (DSS) in personal process management (PPM), we first build a constraint programming (CP) model and a prototype context-aware-mobile application employing this CP model. Then, we evaluate the application and the model via two exemplary real-world scenarios. The scenarios form the core of the experiments conducted with 50 participants. We compare the participants’ planning performances with and without the PPM system with quantitative metrics such as planning times and scenario objective values. In addition, System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaires and open-ended questions provide qualitative evaluation results. Throughout the study, we apply the Design Science Research methodology to rigorously conduct research activities by proof of concept, proof of use, and proof of value. The empirical results clearly show that our proposed model for PPM is effective, and the developed prototype solution generates positive participant comments as well as a high SUS score. Overall, the prototype PPM system with CP implementation leads to better planning in less time in the planning phase, and it lets the user do fast replanning in the execution phase, which is invaluable in dynamically changing situations such as daily activities. Abstract: Semantic Web technology may support more advanced E-Commerce. Namely the representation of products and services in the form of ontologies will simplify the automated extraction and processing of explicit information and will make implicit information available for the discovery and comparison of offerings. One common assumption is that the Semantic Web can be made a reality by gradually augmenting the existing data (mainly HTML/XHTML) by ontological annotations, derived from the non-machine-readable content of today, and that the main limitation of today’s Web is the „needle-inthe-haystack“ problem: everything is on the Web, but we only have insufficient methods of finding and processing what’s already there. In this paper, we (1) evaluate whether this assumption is appropriate for the tourism industry, (2) show, based on a quantitative analysis of Web content about Austrian accommodations, that even a perfect annotation of existing Web content would not allow the vision of the Semantic Web to become a short-term reality for tourism-related E-Commerce, and (3) discuss the implications of these findings for various types of E-Commerce applications that rely on the extraction of information from existing Web resource, and stress the importance of Semantic Web services technology for the Semantic Web. Abstract: The challenge towards e-democracy, through the electronic transformation of political systems, has become increasingly evident within developed economies. It is regarded as an approach for increased and better quality citizen participation in the democratic processes. E-democracy forms a component of overall e-government initiatives where technology adoption and diffusion, to enhance wider access to, and the delivery of, government services, are apparent. However, previous research demonstrates that very few e-democracy proposals survive the stage of formal political decision-making to become substantive e-government projects within national or international agendas. Furthermore, the implementation of e-democracy projects is undertaken at a much slower pace and with dramatically less support than the implementation of other, so-called e-administration, activities in the public sector.The research in this paper considers the notion of the‘middleman paradox’, presenting theoretical and empirical evidence that further investigates the phenomenon associated with potential e-democracy improvements. Specifically, the paper adds a new dimension to existing theories on the hesitant evolution of e-democracy that clearly identifies politicians as an inhibiting factor. Proposals are made for an enhancement of these processes, and suggestions for further applicable research are demonstrated. Collapse
