Abstract: As software becomes increasingly complex, there is a growing need to enhance quality assurance in software engineering. However, the lack of qualified human resources is a barrier to performing software testing activities in software companies. At the same time, software testing can be considered a tedious task and is often not done at the necessary level of detail, e.g., designing test cases. However, it is crucial for novice programmers and testers to acquire and improve their testing competencies, and to utilize testing techniques, e.g., black-box testing. Teaching software testing is often based on theoretical instructions, resulting in limited practical experience. As a result, students may not develop the necessary testing mindset, highlighting the need for more extensive software testing education. To address this issue, this paper utilizes a design science research approach to implement a gamified learning system that promotes black-box testing competencies with empirical insights from a field test. Abstract: Much information systems research on data science treats data as preexisting objects and focuses on how these objects are analyzed. Such a view, however, overlooks the work involved in finding and preparing the data in the first place, such that they are available to be analyzed. In this paper, we draw on a longitudinal study of data management in the oil and gas industry to shed light on this backroom data work. We find that this type of work is qualitatively different from the front-stage data analytics in the realm of data science but is also deeply interwoven with it. We show that this work is unstable and bidirectional. That is, the work practices are constantly changing and must simultaneously take into account what data might be possible to access as well as the potential future uses of the data. It is also a collaborative endeavor involving cross-disciplinary expertise that seeks to establish control over data and is shaped by the epistemological orientation of the oil and gas domain. Abstract: Customers in cloud spot market choose from a set of computing resources (spot instances) some of which are same along one or more of the dimensions of hardware configuration, hardware capacity, software, and location (or zones within the same region). While prior research in IS has shown that cloud market consumers do not substitute identical spot instances across distant locations or regions due to costs associated with latency, there is a paucity of research examining spot price dynamics of similar instances which are same along only some of the dimensions (or characteristics) within a region. Using the economic theory of substitution in production and consumption as our theoretical lens, our empirical analysis finds evidence that consumers substitute similar computing resources in the spot market. Further, we find that while hardware configuration similarity between two instances is positively related to spot instance substitution, this substitution effect along hardware config­ uration is moderated by similarity along hardware capacity and location (zone). Our work contributes to the literature on cloud spot market by providing empirical evidence of the substitution effect among similar spot resources within a region, and thus help in understanding the choices of consumers in this market. We conclude by discussing how practitioners can leverage these findings in the procurement of computing resources from cloud spot market. Collapse

Abstract: Respiratory rate is an extremely important but poorly monitored vital sign for medical conditions. Current modalities for respiratory monitoring are suboptimal. This paper presents a proof of concept of a new algorithm using a contactless ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radar-based sensor to detect respiratory rate in both a laboratory setting and in a two-subject case study in the Emergency Department. This novel approach has shown correlation with manual respiratory rate in the laboratory setting and shows promise in Emergency Department subjects. In order to improve respiratory rate monitoring, the UWB technology is also able to localize subject movement throughout the room. This technology has potential for utilization both in and out of the hospital environments to improve monitoring and to prevent morbidity and mortality from a variety of medical conditions associated with changes in respiratory rate. Abstract: This paper draws on complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory to explore the transformation of an analog automation product platform as it was infused with extensive and deepening digital capacities over a 40-year period. Our case demonstrates how the deepening digitization of components and functions drives complexity by connecting the platform to multiple social and technical settings and producing new interactions and information exchanges. The increased connectivity and dynamism invited unexpected and significant architectural and organizational shifts that moved the platform toward an ecosystem-centered organizing logic. CAS theory and its notion of constrained generating procedures (CGPs) are used to analyze how new connections and interactions produced a multilevel and nonlinear change in the platform organization. We offer two main contributions. First, we provide a novel empirical analysis of how product platform digitization leads to phase transitions and show the mediating role of three mechanisms in this process treated as CGPs: interaction rules, design control, and stimuli-response variety. Second, we demonstrate the multilevel and recursive nature of digitally driven growth in physical product platforms. Collapse

Abstract: The helpfulness of online reviews and their impact on purchase decisions is well established. Much previous research measured that helpfulness by analyzing vote assessments. This study examines an alternative semantic measure based on a text analysis of the term “helpful” in those reviews. Analyzing over 20,000 reviews shows that the semantic measure has a considerably higher R2 than vote assessments. Moreover, the new measure, as opposed to those based on votes, is not affected by posting order, avoiding a known source of bias in vote measures, and is conceptually unrelated to the number of previous helpfulness evaluations. The study also examines the role of the incremental entropy of each review's content as a new determinant of both the existing measures and the new semantic measure of online review helpfulness. The potential of the semantic measure, including that it can be automatically calculated even before human review users read the review, is discussed. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we examine the historical information systems research collaboration network. We build the network using coauthorship information in the Senior Scholars’ basket of eight journals from the publication of MISQ’s first issue in April, 1977, to November, 2015. The different journals vary widely in their network configurations. We examine the influence of gender homophily, geographic homophily, and field tenure heterophily on coauthorship in the network. From using exponential random graph modeling (ERGM) on a randomly selected subset of the network, we present preliminary evidence that suggests that ties in the IS collaboration network exhibit homophily according to gender and geography. Conversely, coauthorship seems to exhibit heterophily along the temporal dimension: shorttenured researchers in the field prefer to collaborate with long-tenured researchers. ERGM enables one to make statistical inferences concerning the influence of node attributes and structural variables on network formation, which is hard to do with logistical regression because network relationships violate the independence of observations assumption. We also reveal the current center of the IS collaboration network. Based on this center, we propose a metric to measure a researcher’s connectedness in the network. Collapse

Abstract: Corporate involvement in open source software (OSS) communities has increased substantially in recent years. Often this takes the form of company employees devoting their time to contribute code to the efforts of projects in these communities. Ideology has traditionally served to motivate, coordinate, and guide volunteer contributions to OSS communities. As employees represent an increasing proportion of the participants in OSS communities, the role of OSS ideology in guiding their commitment and code contributions is unknown. In this research, we argue that OSS ideology misfit has important implications for companies and the OSS communities to which their employees contribute, since their engagement in such communities is not necessarily voluntary. We conceptualize two different types of misfit: OSS ideology under-fit, whereby an employee embraces an OSS ideology more than their coworkers or OSS community do, and OSS ideology overfit, whereby an employee perceives that their coworkers or OSS community embrace the OSS ideology more strongly than the employee does. To develop a set of hypotheses about the implications of these two types of misfit for employee commitment to the company and commitment to the OSS community, we draw on selfdetermination theory. We test the hypotheses in a field study of 186 employees who participate in an OSS community. We find that OSS ideology under-fit impacts the company and the community in the same way: it decreases employee commitment to the company and commitment to the OSS community. In contrast, we find that OSS ideology over-fit increases commitment to the company but decreases commitment to the OSS community. Finally, we find that employees' commitment to their company reinforces the impact of their commitment to the OSS community in driving ongoing code contributions. This provides a holistic view of OSS ideology and its impacts among an increasingly pervasive yet understudied type of participant in OSS research. It provides insights for companies that are considering assigning their employees to work in OSS communities as well as for OSS communities that are partnering with these companies. Collapse

Faced with these new challenges the financial industry in turn has to reevaluate their risk assessment mechanisms. Abstract: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University offers a minor course of study in cybersecurity as an option in our undergraduate Homeland Security program. Since the students are, by and large, social scientists, the focus of the program is to build hyper-awareness of how cybersecurity integrates within their professional aspirations rather than to provide cybersecurity career-level proficiency. Assessing student learning of the technical aspects cannot be performed using traditional tests, as they would not properly measure what the students are learning in a practical sense. Instead, we employ journals and selfreflection to ask the students to express and demonstrate their learning. Although somewhat harder to grade, the journals have huge benefits to the learning environment as well as to actual learning. Collapse
